Chad VanGaalen’s fifth full length record, Shrink Dust, is just over one week from its release, which, thanks to the sorcery-like powers of the internet, that means that you can listen to the record in its entirety now! For free! And you should, because it’s his best, which is saying a lot. And then you should head on over to the Sub Pop internet webstore, The Mega Mart, and pick up your copy on CD, LP, or digital.
Sub Pop’s patron saint of weird, Chad VanGaalen, has a new record coming out on April 29th. It’s called Shrink Dust, and it’s predictably close to/if not perfect and also very weird (Chad’s nothing if not consistent–hear his other records for proof). If I were you, I’d do me (you) a real solid and take a quick three minute break from what I’m (you’re) doing and listen to “Monster” now in the embedded player.
If you pre-order Shrink Dust from us here at Subpop.com, you will receive a free booklet featuring a bunch of original drawings by Chad of characters doing frisbee moves from the science fiction movie he’s been making and of which this album draws it’s inspiration from. Loser Edition vinyl is now sold out!
Record Store Day 2014 is a mere 51 days away according to the official countdown over at RSD.com, and with the popularity of vinyl ever increasing, there are more Record Store Day exclusives in 2014 to sift through than ever before. This means one or two of the following things: 1) You are going to spend MUCH MORE money than last year; and/or 2) It’s going to be tough to stick out in crowded record bins full of limited-edition, Record Store Day-only releases. Well, we here at Sub Pop HQ read the tea leaves, studied the data points, and decided early on that we were going to have to do something really special to stand out this year. We went to work, trimmed the fat, and got our release list to the four most exciting, collectable, sonically pleasing, limited-edition Sub Pop Record Store Day Releases ever. To get a full appreciation of what I’m bullshitting so eloquently about, see below. We’ll see you at your local independent record retailer at four in the morning on April 19th. You bring the coffee. And the donuts.
Mudhoney On Top: KEXP Presents Mudhoney Live on Top of the Space Needle LP: In 2013 both Mudhoney and Sub Pop turned 25, and, in celebration of this milestone, the band performed on the actual roof of Seattle’s iconic and also very tall Space Needle. Due to space limitations up on top, and the obvious safety issues involved, only about 13 people were able to bear witness to this performance (and you can hear each of them, clapping individually between songs). Our friends at KEXP recorded and broadcast this monumentally historic event, and this limited-edition vinyl LP preserves it for eternity. Limited to 2,700 copies worldwide.
Pissed Jeans The Very Best of Sub Pop 2009-2013: Live at the BBC 12” EP: Here are four live-in-the-studio tracks that (finally!) give meaning and validation to Sub Pop’s existence. This historic platter is limited to 3,000 copies worldwide, and these versions of the tracks are exclusive to this release.
Chad VanGaalen “I Want You Back” 7” Single: This single features four new tracks from the Calgary artist’s vault of unheard music. Exactly none of these tracks appear on Chad’s forthcoming album, Shrink Dust (out 4/29 on Sub Pop!). The dare-we-say incredible cover art is by Chad himself. Limited to 2,300 copies worldwide.
The Notwist “Run Run Run” 12” Single: “Run Run Run” is from the band’s just-released album, Close to the Glass, and this single also includes three more, unreleased tracks: one new song, and two exclusive remixes of “Run Run Run.” Both sides of the record feature a special double groove, with each parallel groove containing a different song. Limited to 1,900 copies worldwide.
As some of Chad VanGaalen’s
biggest fans, news of new music from that guy always perks the
collective ears of the employees of Sub Pop, and his new album, Shrink Dust, was no exception. Today, we’re excessively pleased to be able to share the new album track, “Where Are You”, along with album and pre-order news with you, cherished blog reader.
Shrink Dust comes out on April 29th on CD, LP, and MP3, and if you pre-order from the Sub Pop Mega Mart, you’ll receive a set of limited-edition Chad VanGaalen art prints, which, if you’ve seen any of his music videos, you’ll know that you’re in for something very special (and totally weird). Speaking of limited, if you pick up LP from us, you’ll receive the colored-vinyl, Loser Edition of the record. As is the case with all limited-edition things, when they’re gone, they’re gone, so order quickly!
We here at Sub Pop are feeling even more self-congratulatory than usual in sharing further details on our 25th anniversary celebration: the Sub Pop Records Silver Jubilee. To be held July 12th-13th in Seattle, Washington, the event will feature music and comedy performances by past and present Sub Pop and Sub Pop-related artists.
On Friday, July 12th, the previously announced Silver Jubil-eve: A 25th Anniversary Comedy Thing (for Charity!) takes place at the Moore Theatre. The evening will be hosted by Eugene Mirman and feature performances from Marc Maron, Jon Benjamin, Kristen Schaal, and Kurt Braunohler, with additional guests to be announced shortly. Tickets for the event are $25 and are on sale now, right here. More information is here.
Then, on Saturday, July 13th, our entirely FREE, all-ages festival will happen to a stretch of Airport Way in Seattle’s historic & colorful Georgetown neighborhood. The music lineup has been expanded to include friends of Sub Pop Built to Spill (fun fact: Built to Spill recorded their landmark album There’s Nothing Wrong with Love, for the Sub Pop offshoot and respected indie label Up Records in 1994). Also added to the lineup are Sub Pop artists “King Tuff”http://www.subpop.com/artists/king_tuff/, METZ, Chad VanGaalen, and the newest addition to the Sub Pop roster, clipping., from Los Angeles. Our sister label, Hardly Art, will host the “Hardly Art Sideshow Stage” at the Georgetown venue The Mix. The 21-and-over show, which features Hausu, Protomartyr, Deep Time, and more, will begin at 9pm. Please find full updated music lineup details below.
We’d also like to officially welcome clipping. to the Sub Pop family. The group joined the label earlier this month, and will release their label debut in 2014. In the meantime, listen to their album midcity here or watch their latest video for “bout that” here.
Finally, the temporary Sub Pop Mega Mart store, located in the heart of the Georgetown neighborhood, will open its doors on June 8th. Discerning music lovers will find records—including lots of rare and out-of-print colored vinyl—and merchandise from the label’s storied catalog, and take in an art exhibit featuring little-seen materials (sketches and artwork, label ads and press sheets, blue-lines and cutting room floor scraps) from throughout the label’s history. The store hours are Thursday-Saturday 12-8pm, and Sunday 12-6pm. The Sub Pop Mega Mart is at 6003 12th Avenue South in Seattle and will be open from June 8th until July 21st.
All proceeds from both the ticketed Silver Jubil-eve comedy night and donations collected from the Silver Jubilee music event will benefit local organizations 90.3FM KEXP, Northwest Harvest and the Northwest Parkinson’s Foundation. In addition to these worthy organizations, Sub Pop is fortunate to be working with the Georgetown Merchants Association and great businesses like Nordstrom, STG Presents, Uber, Top Pot Doughnuts, Chihuly Garden and Glass, Georgetown Brewing Company, the Sandbox, Fantagraphics Books, Georgetown Records, Via Tribunali, Elysian Brewing Company, and the Georgetown Inn to create a one-of-a-kind event in a one-of-a-kind neighborhood.

Take a couple of minutes to watch the brand new METZ video for the stellar track, “Get Off”, from the band’s 2012 s/t debut. The video was illustrated and animated by the band’s labelmate and fellow Canadian, Chad VanGaalen, who, if you’re familiar with his visual work, you’ll know to be prepared for a slightly unsettling but somehow delightful experience. Enjoy the weird ride.
METZ are touring Europe this fall. Luck you guys.
