There are at least five good reasons to ride your bike all the way from rainy Seattle to Portland, OR, and the number one reason is to raise money for a worthy cause. 

Next month, Sub Pop Records employees will join in the 204-mile Seattle to Portland (STP) Bicycle Classic held on July 16 -17, 2016. Now in its 37th year, the STP is the largest multi-day ride in the Northwest with up to 10,000 riders making the journey through Western Washington and Oregon.

Since being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in January of 2013, our Co-Founder and fearless leader Jonathan Poneman has done everything he can to show others that there is life beyond Parkinson’s. In a 2013 Seattle Times article, he states, “I accept that I have this disease, but that doesn’t give me the right to be passive.” He actually explains it as sort of a blessing. Parkinson’s has allowed him to “recalibrate” important values. “As ironic as it sounds, I am truly grateful to the disease,” and he explains further that, “My love of life and its precious elements became more vivid at the thought of seeing them fade away.”

This year, as we prepared to begin this fundraising effort, JP decided to share a more personal side of his story.  Here, in his own words:

In response to this, and in support of the many individuals and families affected by PD every year, Sub Pop Records employees will be raising money for the Northwest Parkinson’s Foundation (NWPF) by undertaking the fabled STP bike ride.

The Impact

Your DONATION will go directly to the Northwest Parkinson’s Foundation. NWPF is the only independent regional Parkinson’s organization serving Washington State, and aims to establish optimal quality of life for the Northwest Parkinson’s community through awareness, education, advocacy and care.

Located in Seattle, NWPF proudly invests every dollar in local programs to support the Northwest Parkinson’s community. The organization plays a vital role in helping people with Parkinson’s live meaningfully with the disease. In addition, NWPF provides information that gives patients and their families the tools they need to find quality medical care, better manage their disease and take charge of their daily lives.

Sub Pop has a long history of supporting non-profit organizations around the globe but prefers to focus on local organizations in the Pacific Northwest. We have been involved in fundraisers for the uncompensated care for Seattle Children’s Hospital, donated food and funds to Northwest Harvest, given time, support, and funds to the all-ages music venue ‘The Vera Project’, supported the campaign for marriage equality in Washington state, among many more. We believe in supporting the community that has always supported us. The Northwest Parkinson’s Foundation is an organization we feel proud to be riding for.

The cup of Clipping runneth over in these past few days, and just last night the Los Angeles rap group - featuring Daveed Diggs, William Hutson, and Jonathan Snipes - announced their triumphant return to your ears with the new Wriggle EP, which is available digitally right here, right now. 

Wriggle highlights include the title track, “Back Up” (feat. Antwon and Signor Benedick the Moor), “Shooter,” “Hot Fuck No Love” (feat. Cakes Da Killa and Maxi Wild), and “Our Time” (feat. Nailah Middleton).  The EP was produced by Clipping, and is the group’s first release of new material since 2014’s CLPPNG, their acclaimed (and not at all coincidentally on-sale) second album and Sub Pop debut.

And just two nights ago, Clipping’s Daveed Diggs won an actual not-fake Tony Award for “Best Featured Actor in a Musical” for Hamilton. While promoting the musical (in which he plays the Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson) he stopped by the Tonight Show for an interview. During the segment, the Roots play “Work Work” as his walk-on music, and he’s asked to prove that he is the fastest rapper on Broadway. Which he does. On this fine Wednesday we are beyond pleased, blissed out even if you catch us at the right moment, to share news about Phase Zero, the Sub Pop debut full length from Morgan Delt. 

Phase Zero is the follow-up to Morgan’s acclaimed self-titled release that caught our eyes and ears back in 2014. It was performed entirely by Delt and recorded in his Topanga Canyon studio, with mastering by JJ Golden at Golden Mastering.

Phase Zero will be available worldwide on CD / LP / DL / CASS on August 26th and is available right now for preorder from the Sub Pop Mega Mart and other fine online retailers. As per usual these days for our Sub Pop releases, all LP pre-orders placed through Sub Pop Mega Mart (and most independent retailers near you) will receive a limited Loser Edition vinyl, with Phase Zero’s Loser Edition being on red vinyl. Please remember that all Loser Editions are available only while supplies last so this isn’t something that will be around for long. Order soon, is what we are saying.

Today marks the record release of Kristin Kontrol’s debut album, X-Communicate, which you can now stream in its entirety and purchase (definitely purchase!) right here at the Sub Pop Mega Mart.  

Perhaps it bears repeating (or, communicating again?) that Kristin Kontrol is the new project from Kristin Welchez – fka Dee Dee, leader of internationally acclaimed rock outfit Dum Dum Girls, whose most excellent recordings can also be found on this very label. Throughout the best part of a decade, Dum Dum Girls morphed from the girl group-gone-bad moves of debut album I Will Be (2010), to the comparatively plush, noir-pop of 2014’s Too True. Now she’s shed her skin, ditching Dee Dee – the name she assumed for Dum Dum Girls – for her given name, Kristin, and giving us Kristin Kontrol’s X-Communicate. 

Stereogum has noted about the album, “Kristin Kontrol is radically different from anything we would’ve expected from Welchez as Dee Dee. It draws on various strains of pop from various eras, collapsing them together into slick, infectious synth-pop…X-Communicate and the evolution into Kristin Kontrol show Welchez becoming an absolute machine when it comes to hooks.”

Kristin Kontrol will be kicking off an East Coast tour on June 15 at BSP in Kingston, NY and follow that short headline run with dates opening for Garbage in July.  See below for itinerary.

Kyle Craft’s acclaimed debut album Dolls of Highland is only three-ish weeks old and yet he already has his first music video in the can. And I’ll tell you what, this can in particular is worth the watch.  As with the album, the video leaves no room for disappointment.

The saucy new visual was co-directed by Craft and Tyler Bertram, and Craft had this to say of the process: “The video just fell into my lap in a lot of ways.  I wanted something quick with a candid feel to it.  One of my roommates was having his annual drag birthday get together and it seemed like the story would sort of write itself if we just started shooting.  I feel like we approached this in the same way I approached the album… Hit record, see what happens.”

Kyle Craft’s late spring U.S. tour in support of Dolls of Highland resumes tonight, May 19th in San Francisco at the Independent and currently ends May 30th in Salt Lake City, UT at Kilby Court. Along the way, he’ll support Fruit Bats (May19th-25th) and share the stage with label mates Arbor Labor Union (May 29th). Additional live dates will be announced shortly.  (complete dates below.)

Dolls of Highland is currently available on CD / LP / DL / CASS from Sub Pop Mega Mart, iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, and Bandcamp. The limited “Loser” edition on pink with black-swirled vinyl while sold out via the Megamart, is still available at shows on tour and at independent retailers near you (while supplies last).
