Debby Friday Announces New Album The Starrr Of The Queen Of Life

Debby Friday is announcing The Starrr Of The Queen Of Life, her kaleidoscopic new album out Friday, August 1st, 2025, worldwide from Sub Pop and in Canada from Royal Mountain Records.

In ancient Babylonia, stargazers looked up at the cloudless night sky and saw a blazing ball of light. Burning brilliantly, the celestial body appeared to be a luminous sign from the great beyond. They were looking at what we now call Vega, the fifth-brightest star visible from Earth. Debby Friday was learning about these heavenly bodies in between nonstop touring across Europe, following the otherworldly success of her thunderous debut album GOOD LUCK, which dominated dance floors and took home the auspiciously astrological Polaris Prize upon its release in 2023. She learned about Vega and the way its placement in a birth chart lends the gifts of creativity, acclaim and bravery—as long as its recipient is humble enough to receive them.

On The Starrr Of The Queen Of Life, Debby Friday defines success on her own terms. “I want to be a starrr, I can’t hide that desire,” she says. “But what I don’t want is to live someone else’s dream or to follow a pre-set path.” For the Nigerian-Canadian polymath, to be a starrr is to live at the extremes: public versus private, hubris versus humility, flying versus falling.

Part of being a starrr means embracing the apocalyptic hedonism of an all-night rave — like on the album’s epic pre-release single, “1/17,” and today’s new offering, the explosive dance pop anthem “All I Wanna Do Is Party.”

Co-directed with frequent collaborator Kevan Funk, Debby Friday stars alongside a troupe of dancers in the official “All I Wanna Do Is Party” video. Of the video, she has this to say, “The video is really about discipline and craft. It’s about the transformations that happen when you devote yourself to a process over time. The starrr is a metaphor for all these thoughts I have around fame, success, failure, love, power, god, death, life, everything. My starrr is in me, and your starrr is in you, and it’s just a matter of surrendering to it.”

Winning the Polaris Prize for GOOD LUCK only made Debby Friday want to grind harder. But life on the razor’s edge can only be sustainable for so long: During a nonstop tour schedule in support of the album, she fell violently ill. The diagnosis? Stress-induced shingles. That experience forced Friday to turn her focus inward. The next year saw a change in management, in her routine, and priorities.

To help bring her vision of radical honesty on the dance floor to life, Friday recruited Australian producer Darcy Baylis (Wicca Phase Springs Eternal). Returning to their de facto home base in London in between touring, the pair traded ideas in the studio from morning until midnight. Layered with meaning, The Starrr Of The Queen Of Life is brimming with coded, if-you-know-you-know references—weaving love letters and innuendos from the names of it-girl perfumes, French cognac, and Hellenistic prophetesses who speak in tongues. With additional production credits from Graham Walsh (METZ, Holy F*ck), Tayhana (Rosalia, N.A.A.F.I.) and Detroit ghettotech prodigies HiTech, it reads like a manifestation of Friday’s pursuit of an experimental pop sound that still feels distinctively hers.

“This album is about the idea of reaching towards something,” she says. “It’s about seeing the signs and following that impulse, always with the potential of either flying into the sun or falling back to earth.” On The Starrr Of The Queen Of Life, Debby Friday takes flight, fastening her wings, following the sound of her own voice (Read full bio at Sub Pop).

The Starrr Of The Queen Of Life is available to preorder from Sub Pop and Royal Mountain. LP preorders from megamart.subpop.com in the US, MegaMart 2 in the UK and EU, Royal Mountain in Canada and your local record store will receive the following limited color vinyl versions: the Sub Pop Loser editions on Graphite (US) and Bio Light Blue (EU/UK), and Royal Mountain’s edition on White (Canada) (All vinyl colors whilst stock lasts!).

Debby Friday has scheduled two performances for the Spring and Summer of 2025: Thursday, May 15th in Brighton, UK at The Great Escape Festival  and Sunday, August 3rd in Montreal at Osheaga Festival—additional live dates to be announced soon.

What People Are Saying About Debby Friday:
“The Toronto-based vocalist and producer Debby Friday won the Polaris Music Prize for her sharp 2023 debut album, Good Luck. She returns with the euphoric electro-pop single ‘1/17,’ a dance-floor confessional that shows off yet another side of her multifaceted talent. “I swear you’re a sign,” Friday sings in an airy atmosphere punctured by percolating synths. The track builds layer atop gauzy layer until it explodes in a burst of club-ready catharsis.”- New York Times

“The song brings back some of that old PC Music feeling. It’s a euphoric, unapologetically cheesy trance-pop confection. As synth-bloops whirl all around her, Friday chants, “Poetry and nude selfies, love the way that you know me.” It feels like it’s heading toward a climactic beat-drop…the drums do eventually arrive, and that moment is awesome. Friday co-directed the bare-bones ‘1/17’ video with Kevan Funk, and it makes a great case for her as a performer.” STEREOGUM

“Last time we heard a single from Debby Friday, the Toronto artist was commanding girls to the dance floor on a minimal club track co-produced by Detroit rascals HiTech. She’s in a totally different headspace on the hyperpop ballad ‘1/17,’ singing about love and sensuality over bubbling synths which eventually give way to a euphoric trance finale.” THE FACE

Lael Neale Shares “Wild Waters” Official Video From Altogether Stranger Her New Album Out This Friday, May 2nd

Today, Lael Neale is sharing “Wild Waters,” a new single and official video from Altogether Stranger, her new, expansive forthcoming album, out this Friday, May 2nd, 2025 worldwide on Sub Pop.

“Wild Waters” is also a vignette from The Altogether Stranger, a visual accompaniment to the album “Altogether Stranger,” which will premiere on YouTube on Thursday, May 1st. Starring Neale and written and directed in collaboration with producer and accompanist Guy Blakeslee, the 34-minute film weaves together nine music videos,  capturing a world in which Neale, in a mirrored jumpsuit, plays an interdimensional being on a mission to restore harmony to humanity with her cosmic Omnichord.

It includes guest appearances from Ian Svenonius (as God) and choreography and movement direction by Sandi Denton (who also leads The Rated Z Dancers, who appear throughout).

Neale says of the “Wild Waters” visual and The Altogether Stranger…film:
“The video for ‘Wild Waters’ was a collaboration with choreographer & dancer Sandi (Denton). I had this vision of dancers playing the part of interdimensional beings performing a dance that would open a portal, calling my character through. In perfect synchronicity, when I approached Sandi with the idea, she had already been building a two-person dance that fit seamlessly. I love working with Sandi for this reason.”

Neale continues, “While the album was made by just me and Guy, the really fun part of creating this film was getting to include our friends in the production and experiment alongside some of the many visionary artists who are active in Los Angeles right now to bring the story to life. The guiding ethos for both the record and the film was an intuitive (vs. technical)  approach, embracing the primitive simplicity of making things by hand.”

Also on release date, Neale fans will see new official videos for remaining Altogether Stranger songs “All Good Things Will Come To Pass,” “Come On,” “Sleep Through The Long Night,” “New Ages,” “All Is Never Lost,” and “There From Here,” arrive on YouTube.

More on Lael Neale’s Altogether Stranger:
Lael Neale’s minimalist drone pop draws inspiration from the Transcendentalists, the alienation of modern life, and a rich array of musical influences—ranging from Dionne Warwick and John Lennon to primitive American gospel and Spacemen 3. Her expansive new record, Altogether Stranger, was written and recorded in the early morning quiet of Los Angeles. Clocking in at just 32 minutes, the 9-song LP covers an unexpected breadth of musical and lyrical terrain—from garage rock nursery rhymes and creation myths to Motorik dance dirges and solitary Omnichord meditations. A brilliant lyricist, Neale has a unique ability to uncover the extraordinary within the mundane, tackling themes of polarity that recur throughout her work—country vs. city, humanity vs. technology, isolation vs. society. This album is her third collaboration with producer Guy Blakeslee who helps expand the tonal palette while staying true to Neale’s commitment to the raw immediacy and hand-made intimacy of home recording (read more at Sub Pop).

METZ Reunite for One Triumphant Night to Perform “A Boat to Drown In” On Netflix’s Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney

On Wednesday, April 23rd, Canadian punk/noise-rock greats METZ reunited for an exceptional, one-time-only TV performance of “A Boat to Drown In,” on the April 2025 Christmas episode of Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney on Netflix. Watch now.

“A Boat to Drown In,” specifically requested by and a favorite of John Mulaney, appears on the band’s acclaimed 2020 Sub Pop album Atlas Vending. METZ’s most recent (and, as it turns out, final) album is the equally acclaimed 2023 release Up On Gravity Hill. Both are available worldwide from Sub Pop.

“‘A Boat to Drown In’ presents the more melodic side of Metz. It still slaps mighty hard, but all that noise congeals into a droning harmonic barrage that surges forward at high speed for nearly eight minutes. “ Stereogum

“METZ are back with the chaotic noise-rock anthem of the summer.” Louder

“…a roaring and introspective track.” The Observer

“Propelled forward by the most satisfyingly scuzzy guitars, the near-eight minute track is a melding point of gnarliness, an immersion therapy of punk.” DIY

“…the Toronto trio have released their best material to date with this (eight-minute) new single.” The Independent ‘I’

Listen to The Bug Club’s “How to Be a Confidante” The New Single From Very Human Features

Today is April 16th, and The Bug Club is sharing “How to Be a Confidante,” a new single from the group’s forthcoming new long-player, Very Human Features.

On Very Human Features, The Bug Club continues their habit of presenting as a collective mind. Two-in-one. Rarely do you find a band with two creative forces that have such a singular, shared perspective, sense of humor, and knack for a pop melody. “How to Be a Confidante” does that-thing-The-Bug-Club-really-know-how-to-do where they speak as two voices from the same mind and pluck out common aspects of how we all live and make them sound ridiculous. The surreal is in the familiar, not in ignoring the familiar - The Bug Club knows this, and that understanding joins an unrelenting bassline in forming the backbone of this garage-infused belter.

The Bug Club will spend a good deal of time on the road in 2025 performing “How to Be a Confidante” along with other choice highlights from Very Human Features and their previous Sub Pop release, 2024’s On the Intricate Inner Workings of the System by Means of Popular Music, or the Contemplation of Pretty Faces, Tinned Bubbles and Strife. PLUS! Some of their older songs.

And today, the band is announcing new North American dates with Sub Pop labelmates Omni, which begin Friday, June 13th in Montreal, QC at Cabaret Foufounes and run through Friday, June 27th in Philadelphia, PA at Johnny Brenda’s.

Additional international touring highlights for the Spring and Summer of 2025 include The Bug Club’s European club shows (April 29th-May 15th), and festival appearances (May 15th-September ; select dates). Please find a complete list of current tour dates below.

LP preorders from megamart.subpop.com in North America, MM2 in the UK + EU, and your local record store, will receive the limited Loser Edition on Purple (NA) or Bio Pink (UK/EU) vinyl (all vinyl color editions whilst stock lasts!).

In February, The Bug Club released “Have U Ever Been 2 Wales,” a joyous ode to their beloved home country that features upbeat, regionally referential lyrics like “Have you ever been to Wales? It’s good, it’s goo-ooh-ooh-ooh-hood” and “…every choir from Caldicot to Treorchy will sing it proud.” The spirited song, doubtless soon to be the new ad jingle for Visit Wales, is also out now worldwide (including Wales) on all DSPs from Sub Pop.

The Bug Club has seen support from the likes of NME, BBC, KEXP, Bandcamp Daily, Brooklyn Vegan, PASTE, Stereogum, see/saw, Dusted, The Stranger  Rosy Overdrive, Glide, and more. NME said of their 2024 release On the Intricate Inner Workings of the System…., “…its 11 songs crackle with incisive melodies and funny pop culture-addled lyrics – they reference The Great Escape’s Virgil Hilts one minute, and move on to the horror of Lonsdale slip on daps the next – but they’re in and out in under 26 minutes. Zero fat.”

Band of Horses Collaborates With Gryffin On “The Funeral (2025 Edit)”

Band Of Horses has collaborated with dance music maverick GRYFFIN on an official 2025 version of the group’s double platinum, indie–rock classic ‘The Funeral’ out today via Sub Pop Records.

Initially released in 2006, ‘The Funeral’ reigns as one of the most potent songs of the early aughts, having soundtracked an entire generation of pop culture, and is Band of Horses’ most successful song to date.

With the rework, GRYFFIN taps into the song’s emotional core while reimagining the nostalgia–inducing gem for the dancefloor. Like his recent album PULSE, GRYFFIN’s take on the song binds past and present influences through sound, uplifting the original’s iconic melody by injecting progressive builds, surging basslines, and four–on–the–floor percussion. The 2025 edit not only commemorates ‘The Funeral’ as it approaches its 20th anniversary, but also cements a return to GRYFFIN’s roots in indie influenced electronic music.

“We’re honored that ‘The Funeral’ could be a source of inspiration for GRYFFIN. It’s exciting to see the track take on a new life and reach new ears in a fresh and unexpected way. GRYFFIN’s incredibly talented and we’re thankful he’s brought his own perspective to a song that’s meant so much to us. It’s nice. Thanks for the fresh coat of paint, GRYFFIN!” – Band of Horses

“Anyone who’s followed me since day one knows how much indie music and my early era SoundCloud remixes helped shape my sound as an artist. Late last year, I rediscovered Band of Horses’ ‘The Funeral’, and it immediately took me back to that era. In less than 24 hours, I flipped it and sent it to the band. Since then, over the last several months I’ve been lucky enough to work with Ben and his team to bring a new vision to such a legendary song.” – GRYFFIN

Remixing is embedded deep in GRYFFIN’s roots. His ability to transform mainstream hits into dancefloor anthems attributed to his early success, with his pop and indie remixes of Maroon 5, BANKS, Portugal. The Man, Ellie Goulding, and Years & Years, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year, leading to a now-flourishing discography of cross-genre originals.

GRYFFIN’s ‘The Funeral’ edit arrives just in time for the kickoff of his headline PULSE: PHASE 2 Tour. The tour acts as a final hurrah for last year’s acclaimed album PULSE, which was an ode to the dancefloor and GRYFFIN’s origins in the golden era of electronic music. The 2025 edit is a fitting accompaniment to the tour as it embodies the nostalgia and sentimentality imbued throughout PULSE.

Band of Horses are also hitting the road this summer with their respective tour. The 25-date tour will see them perform at renowned music halls and amphitheaters across the US, along with festival appearances at Spoleto Festival, Sleepy Hollow Music Festival, Maha Festival, and Borderland Festival, and three stops throughout Norway. Band of Horses will also join special shows in Birmingham with Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Orange Beach with The Red Clay Strays, and Saratoga with Iron & Wine.

Stream GRYFFIN’s new “The Funeral” remix available now on all platforms and catch GRYFFIN live on his PULSE: PHASE 2 Tour.

ABOUT BAND OF HORSES

There might be no other band that was able to channel the generational anxiety in those early millennial years and turn it into such powerful and inclusive art quite like Band of Horses. Band of Horses fashioned gorgeously ragged epics, Ben Bridwell’s high-flying vocals and eccentric enunciation floating like a specter that felt like a prelude to a dream. Full of profundity, truth, and sometimes just homespun advice on how to live, Band of Horses songs have become anthems and touchstones for fans — meditations on change, longing, and what a person will do to make things right. And what you do when you can’t.

The band’s debut Everything All the Time (2006) introduced their sweeping, emotionally resonant sound, and the albums that followed have cemented their place in the indie rock canon. They’ve released six studio albums, including Infinite Arms (2010), which earned a Grammy nomination. Most recently, the critically acclaimed Things Are Great (2022) finds the band recapturing the raw emotion and unpolished punk-rock spirit of its earlier days.

ABOUT GRYFFIN

Japanese-American producer, instrumentalist, songwriter, and DJ, Dan Griffith has built a breathtaking catalog of melodic dance originals and remixes as GRYFFIN. His platinum and gold-certified discography features collaborations with crossover acts like OneRepublic, Tinashe, MØ, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Noah Kahan, as well as electronic contemporaries including Kygo, Gorgon City, and Seven Lions. GRYFFIN released his chart-topping debut album Gravity in 2019, with his sophomore album Alive following in 2022 and third studio album PULSE in 2024. GRYFFIN launched the PULSE era with performances at Ultra Music Festival, Coachella’s DoLaB Stage, and EDC Las Vegas before setting out on his headline PULSE Tour.
