We here at Sub Pop HQ have made a pretty big deal about the fact that it’s been a VERY LONG 16 years since The Afghan Whigs released their last record, 1965, but I think that we should be focusing on just how surprisingly goddamn good Do to the Beast actually turned out to be. I mean, 16 years is a very long time, dust settles, cobwebs form, so Greg Dulli and company had the latitude to cash in on a glorified reunion, but they didn’t. Instead, they turned in ten songs of what would become Do to the Beast, an artistic triumph and my personal favorite ‘Whigs record to date. That’s overcoming some serious adversity (that is to say that time is the greatest adversary).
Well, a decade and a half later, you can once again find The Afghan Whigs in the ‘new release’ bin of your local independent retailer–I couldn’t be more pleased to report that.
