Running a record label is a fast-paced, multifaceted operation, though most of our efforts going into designing, printing, and slinging t-shirts (business tip: t-shirts are where the real money is). But, every once in a while, we take a break from all that t-shirt stuff and we get to sign an artist that we’ve been HUGE fans of for years—artists with an established fan base who would be welcome at any record label that they please (why they choose us, we’ll never know).
Well, this glorious and career-justifying event has just happened to us, and before we announce which musical artist or artists that you’re likely already a fan of that just joined the Sub Pop family, we’d like to play a little game with you (and your ears). Embedded in this post is a 15-second clip of the first focus track off of the to-be-named-later’s (specifically, we’re announcing it on Tuesday, November 19th) Sub Pop debut album. We will select a random person from the winning entries and they will receive a Loser Edition Bundle from the artist in question. So, take a listen and join in the on the guessing fun, because if not, you’ll likely feel wistful about it later.
Here’s how the game is played:
-Play the 15-second clip embedded in this post.
-Wager a guess as to what sonic geniuses could possibly be behind this song.
-Give us your guess via a comment below (include your email in the comment), on Instagram or Twitter (@subpop), or on the Facebook post associated with this contest.
-One winning entry will be chosen at random and will receive the limited, Loser Edition Bundle (T-shirt, LP, anything else that may be associated with the release) upon release date.
-Tell all of your friends how much you like Sub Pop Records and how handsome we are and stuff.
The full track and signing announcement will be made public on Tuesday, November 19th. A winner will be picked that day as well!
After a five-plus year hiatus, it’s pretty wonderful to hear from Joel Thibodeau and his band, Death Vessel, again; it’s been far too long since 2008’s very excellent Nothing Is Precious Enough for Us. Today, with a Pitchfork premiere, the band broke their silence with “Ilsa Drown” (embedded), featuring Jonsi from Sigor Ros, off of their forthcoming Island Intervals, out February 25th on this very record label.
After a few days of having you, the discerning and very astute music listening public, listen to a 15-second snippet of a track and then try to guess who it was exactly that we signed, it’s time to announce to you that WE SIGNEDTHENOTWIST! If you can’t tell, the all caps portion of the previous sentence is there to denote the fact that we are over the moon-levels of excited about this addition to our weird and loving family of artists. So, without further adieu, Close To The Glass, The Notwist’s Sub Pop debut full-length, comes out on February 25th! You can pre-order the CD or limited, colored-vinyl Loser Edition LP here.
If The Notwist are a new band to you, get to know them! On this page, you can read a bit more about them. In the meantime, listen to the album’s title track, “Close To The Glass” in the embed, and feel the excitement that we feel this morning!
If you pre-order Close To The Glass, you will receive a set of small, limited-edition art prints. Speaking of limited-edition, if you pre-order the record on the vinyls, you’ll receive the limited Loser Edition of Close To The Glass on colored-vinyl; in this case a 2xLP, one orange and one blue with an etching on the fourth side of the LP (the etching will also be on non-Loser Edition LPs by the way). And, as is always the case with limited-edition things, when they’re gone, they’re gone, so order now!
