Sub Pop will be releasing “Same Love,” a powerful new song from Seattle hip hop artists Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, July 24th via iTunes, and July 31st as a limited-edition 7" record, which will be available through Sub Pop direct sales and here at subpop.com. The song, which features guest vocals from Mary Lambert, can also be found on the duo’s independently-released LP, The Heist(October 9th).
“Same Love,” an appeal for support of same-sex marriage rights, is being released in conjunction with Music 4 Marriage Equality efforts to help approve Ref 74 in WA this November. Polling shows that 54% of Washington state residents support of same-sex marriage; if the referendum is approved, it could pave the way for marriage equality across the country.
The cover art for the single is a photograph of Macklemore’s uncles, who served as inspiration for the song and were a model of a committed and loving relationship while he was growing up.
In his personal statement, Macklemore says, “My hope is that my personal testimony can help in some way to not only advance the dialogue and approve Referendum 74, but also to help shape a culture of belonging in which all people are equal.” You can read the entirety of Macklemore’s compelling statement here.
Sub Pop Executive Vice President Megan Jasper says of the duo’s efforts on behalf of marriage equality, “One of the many things we admire about these guys is their fiercely independent spirit. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to work with them, especially on something we, as a company, support.”
