Alan Sparhawk Releases Striking, Timely New Songs: “JCMF” and “No More Darkness”

Today, February 17th, Alan Sparhawk is releasing two enthralling new songs, “JCMF” and “No More Darkness.” Both tracks were written, composed, and produced at 20 Below Studio in Duluth, MN, with Nat Harvie mixing. They feature Sparhawk on Guitar/Vocals, Eric Pollard on Drums and Sparhawk’s son, Cyrus Sparhawk, on Bass. 
 
Sparhawk shares about both singles:

“JCMF”: This is a song I’ve had for a few years, but couldn’t find the right way to play or record it. We started playing it last year in the Alan Sparhawk Solo Band, on tour, and with each month, the sentiment of the song only increased. I feel like the song has become a rebuke against the fascist/authoritarian streak that several world leaders have taken on and to the people who have been blinded into supporting them. 

“No More Darkness”: Inspired by a David Lynch quote (“Don’t fight the darkness. Don’t even worry about the darkness. Turn on the light and the darkness goes. Turn up the light of pure consciousness. Negativity goes.”) This song reminds me to choose light in especially dark times. We were ending our set with this tune all year, and it is my wish for everyone, especially those who feel alone.


Sparhawk will be donating a portion of his royalties from these songs to the International Institute of Minnesota.

Alan Sparhawk of Low Shares “Get Still” (+ Official Video), The Latest Single From His New Album, With Trampled by Turtles

Today, Alan Sparhawk has shared an official video for “Get Still,” the final pre-release single from the forthcoming With Trampled by Turtles, available worldwide from Sub Pop on Friday, May 30, 2025.
 
Originally appearing in alternate form on Sparhawk’s 2024 release, White Roses, My God, this once abstract lyrical improvisation is now rendered clear as day, with lush acoustic instrumentation by fellow Duluth musical travelers Trampled by Turtles. For Sparhawk, revisiting the track meant understanding where it came from emotionally: “You want to be true to what you’re singing.” Watch here.
 
The Wire says of the album, “Thanks undoubtedly to their established friendship and chemistry, With Trampled by Turtles sees Sparhawk and the band bring an effortlessness and consistency to material of varied origin, from old songs never recorded with Low, to newer compositions. Notably, two songs from White Roses… appear in altered form here; wrenched from their electronic cage into warmer, more open environs, and no less moving or complicated for it. ‘Heaven’ retains the simplicity of its lilting minute-long original, with Sparhawk’s straightforward plea (‘Heaven/It’s a lonely place if you’re alone/l wanna be there’) accompanied by mandolin. The synthesized chorus of ‘Get Still’ is now an enveloping embrace of real voices. On ‘Not Broken,’ one of two older songs co-written with Parker, the couple’s daughter Hollis is a grounding force, repeating the chorus (‘It’s not broken/I’m not angry’) like a mantra.”

Alan Sparhawk of Low Shares Official Video For “Not Broken”

Today, Alan Sparhawk shares the official video for the new single “Not Broken” from With Trampled by Turtles, the sophomore solo effort from Alan Sparhawk of Low.
 
“Not Broken” is a gorgeous track that features guest vocals from Sparhawk’s daughter, Hollis. You can now watch the official video directed by Alexa Viscius. Click here to watch. 
 
In their review of With Trampled By Turtles, Mojo Magazine says of the song, “Not Broken is a chamber-folk song led by Eamonn McLain’s cello, the banjo and mandolin joining in with harp-like discretion. and Sparhawk’s voice intertwined with a female foil as it did on so many Low tracks. Alan Sparhawk of Low Announces New Album, With Trampled by Turtles Available May 30th

On Friday, May 30th, Sub Pop Records will release With Trampled by Turtles, the sophomore solo effort from Alan Sparhawk of Low. With Trampled by Turtles is a record exactly as its name implies: a collective, communal, fraternal and empathetic record, recorded with the assistance of long-time friends and fellow Minnesotans, Trampled by Turtles.
 
With Trampled by Turtles was recorded at the end of 2023 at Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, Minnesota. Alan Sparhawk came in towards the end of Trampled by Turtles’ session there, with several songs in development. Some had never worked in Low; others were fresh and waiting for the right setting. For years, the two parties had talked about making something together, but the talk was never more than hypothetical. When Sparhawk needed it most, the promise reemerged, sharper than ever. “When the opportunity seems right,” Sparhawk says, “you jump.”
 
Today, they share an official video for the album’s debut offering, “Stranger.” Voices are abundant, and a full chorus harmonizes in their new video, which was edited by Jacob Kasar. Watch here.

Alan Sparhawk With Trampled by Turtles
 
No one can help you build something beautiful quite like those who know you best. Alan Sparhawk knows this well. In his years in Low, he built decades of stirring music with his wife and lifelong creative partner Mimi Parker. In recent years, he has performed with his son Cyrus in DERECHO Rhythm Section, a funk band that also frequently features his daughter Hollis on vocals. There’s an irreplaceable naturalism that comes with this kind of dynamic. Those who know you understand you. They love you. They want to help you bring your greatest passions to fruition.
 
And so, it only made sense that Sparhawk would turn to fellow Duluth musicians Trampled by Turtles to realize his latest record. As friends and mentees of Low’s, taken under Sparhawk and Parker’s wing from their earliest days as a bar band—Trampled by Turtles have performed with Sparhawk countless times over the years. The Duluth ties run deep: “There’s a certain vibe that has to do with underdog syndrome, coming from a small town,” Sparhawk muses. “Some of it is the weird grind and slackness that being at the mercy of Mother Nature puts in you. It humbles you.”
 
The two artists hold the kind of ironclad, lifelong bond where they stand by one another as artists and people. Following Parker’s passing in 2022, Trampled by Turtles invited Sparhawk to join them on tour to give him a space to be surrounded by friends. Occasionally, he would join them onstage. The outpouring of love was palpable every time they played together, a surge of warmth. Nurturance was in every note.

Alan Sparhawk Begins World Tour January 13th

Beginning January 13th in Fargo, ND, Alan Sparhawk of Low will embark on a mammoth run of dates supporting his acclaimed 2024 album, White Roses, My God, with newly announced shows in Australia from Feb 13th- Feb 15th. The January run will feature an opening performance from Circuit des Yeux.
 
White Roses, My God received praise from Stereogum, Pitchfork, Clash, MOJO, Uncut, The Line of Best Fit, Under The Radar, Brooklyn Vegan and The New York Times. The album was also #1 in Electronic Sound Magazine’s 2024 Albums of the Year.

Alan Sparhawk of Low Begins World Tour on November 2nd

This weekend, Alan Sparhawk of Low will commence his first live dates in support of his acclaimed solo debut White Roses, My God. The first leg of dates begins on Saturday, November 2nd, in Dublin, IE, at Opium Room, and runs through November 6th, with SOLD OUT shows in Leeds and London for Pitchfork Music Festival with Jessica Pratt. He then returns to the US with a supporting run opening for Godspeed You! Black Emperor (Nov. 8th-24th) with a one-off headline show on Nov. 20th at the Ottobar in Baltimore. In 2025, he will headline dates in the US with Circuit des Yeux (Jan. 13th-Apr. 5th) with more European dates to follow. Please find a current list of dates below.
 
Today, Sparhawk has shared a new lyric video for the track “I Made This Beat,” which you can watch here. White Roses, My God has received praise from outlets such as Stereogum, Pitchfork, Clash, MOJO, Uncut, The Line of Best Fit, Under The Radar, Brooklyn Vegan, and The New York Times.
