PANDERING TO THE LOCALS MAY ‘07

3236

Who’s handsome and furry all over? Not your mom, silly, the Handsome Furs! About-to-be-married couple Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade) and Alexei Perry formed the band in the winter of 2005, and toured Europe before they even had a record out. Their debut album, called Plague Park (lovingly referred to in World HQ as Plaque Park_, which I guess would be a park in Candy Land, or possibly an amusement park designed by dentists to frighten children into a consistent dental care regimen…) is out May 22nd. It is dark and minimal and catchy as shit, and is the perfect foil for the impending pesky, sunny summer, what with its “cheeriness” and “positivity." You can pre-order it now-ish, right here. With the help of the Mighty Canadian Government, Dan and Alexei made a wicked scary, Twin Peaks-y video for the song “Dumb Animals”, which you can view HERE0wutqc.

Also, F your I, the word for Sub Pop Summer ’07 is BANANAS. Why? Because we’ll have new full-lengths from not just the H. Furs, but also from Pissed Jeans, Jennifer Gentle, Patton Oswalt, Tiny Vipers, The Brunettes, and Kinski. And (!), there will be new singles from The Thermals, CSS, and Iron & Wine. Thankfully, during summertime in the Pacific Northwest, the sun rises early and doesn’t set until around 9:30 PM, which means we have nearly double the daylight hours, so getting out of the office at seven won’t be as harsh as it is when it’s pitch black outside. You’ll want to keep checking Sub Pop Dot Com for More Exciting News!

A Beginner’s Guide to Iron & Wine

While it’s been almost 8 years since Sub Pop released The Shepherd’s Dog, the last record that we worked with Iron & Wine on, we remain huge admirers of the work of Sam Beam. With the release of Archive Series Vol. No. 1, we decided to compile a playlist that we’re calling “A Beginner’s Guide to Iron & Wine” to introduce/reacquaint fans to the evocative and beautiful sound of I&W.

Listen to “A Beginner’s Guide to Iron & Wine”

Archive Series Volume No. 1 features 16 home recordings from the same period as his stunning 2002 debut album The Creek Drank the Cradle

The album was digitally transferred from the original cassettes. It comes packaged in gatefold artwork featuring the Bird of Paradise quilt housed in the American Folk Art Museum.

Order Archive Series Vol. No.1 here.
