Today, Friday, August 14th,Sweeping Promises release their incredible new album, You Say I Romanticize, worldwide on Sub Pop. The band is celebrating the occasion with a new video for the song “Rapture, Or…” directed by Shawn Brackbill. Click HERE to watch.
Caufield Schnug and Lira Mondal of Sweeping Promises share about the song: “‘Rapture, Or…’ we originally envisioned a sort of fallen monastic, mockingly devout, longing for a near-term judgment day (catch phrase: ‘I can’t wait for tomorrow’). The actual lyrics are scenario-adaptable, though, as apocalypse fantasies seemingly guide culture now, so you can’t blame us for finding a desire lane amid the ruins. It’s one of our poppier songs ever. We double-tracked Lira’s loud vocals in our tiled bathroom - our ‘cathedral’. A malfunctioning arp played the ascendant synth arpeggios, and the guitar on this one was improvised.”
The band is also currently in the midst of a five-date run of FREE in-store performances at independent record stores across the Midwest. Starting August 12th at Old Love Garden at the Toy Store Upstairs in their hometown of Lawrence, KS; August 13th at Euclid Records in St. Louis, MO; August 14th at Goner Records in Memphis, TN; Feel It Records in Cincinnati, OH on August 15th; and Bric-a-Brac Records & Collectibles in Chicago, IL on August 16th. “Rapture, Or…” follows the previously released singles “Accent,”“Cocoon,” and “Shooting Shadows.”YouSay I Romanticize was recorded over an 18-month period and is a tribute to the chaos of creation and collaboration under shifting circumstances. Guitarist Caufield Schnug and bassist/vocalist Lira Mondal found and tested themselves in their combination tour house and recording studio in Kansas, annually working on dozens of albums from other bands, hosting tour stops, planning shows, and the like. After an immersive process of tracking and whittling down YSIR demos and carving out an idiosyncratic chamber-recording method for the album’s intentional wall-of-sound, the duo brought in touring drummer Spenser Gralla to play the songs as the band would on stage.
Sweeping Promises, YouSay I Romanticize, is out now on CD/LP/Digitally worldwide from Sub Pop.

“Sweeping Promises manage to extol the importance of self-expression while advocating for a collective good.” - Paste

“The bass-driven post-punk spirit of the Slits, Ut and Au Pairs suffuses the brilliant latest single from the Kansas band, vocalist Lira Mondal coiled and prowling then letting go with high-pitched yells” - [“Accent”] The Guardian
”You Say I Romanticize laughs at doing things the hard way and embraces the humanity of it all. It’s not searching for the perfect experience, but being present in one’s own life, art, and community.” - The Line of Best Fit
“The power duo are back with their frenetic art punk style that will equally satisfy as well as leave you famished and craving more” - NARC

Today, July 15th, Sweeping Promises share the pulsating ripper “Accent”, available now on all streaming services from Sub Pop.
The band describes “Accent” as a, “…cacophony of routine, the plight of a lowly drone who dreams of breaking out of an instinct-born & increasingly restrictive flight path. It’s got a flapping, insectoid rhythm, which is misery to play. We call it ‘cicadence.’ It’s a succession of bee-sting realizations from an individual dangerously at risk of becoming feral, independent, an outsider.”
“Accent” follows previously released singles “Cocoon” and “Shooting Shadows” from their forthcoming album, YouSay I Romanticize, available Friday, August 14th from Sub Pop.
Sweeping Promises has also confirmed a four-date run of in-store appearances at independent record stores across the Midwest. Today, Sweeping Promises has shared an official video for their smoldering new single, “Cocoon,” available now on all streaming platforms. Following lead single and pummeling album opener “Shooting Shadows,” “Cocoon” is the second offering from the post-punk duo’s forthcoming third album, YouSay I Romanticize, out worldwide on August 14th on Sub Pop. The video was co-produced by Shawn Brackbill and the band.
Of the track, the band says, “We wrote ‘Cocoon’ years ago to extend our live set back when we only knew the ten songs from our first album. It has become a staple of our live set over the years and has undergone several metamorphoses in our home studio, as we wanted to develop this track in a disarming and dead-simple way for the ‘live sound’ mentality of YSIR. The music video intercuts homegrown live footage of the band playing shows in the Kansas community with the sculptural and psychogeographic idea of the cocoon, which entices and finally envelops our singer, Lira Mondal.”
Recorded over an 18-month period, You Say I Romanticize is a tribute to the chaos of creation and collaboration under shifting circumstances. Guitarist Caufield Schnug and bassist/vocalist Lira Mondal found and tested themselves in their combination tour house and recording studio in Lawrence, KS, annually working on dozens of albums from other bands, hosting tour stops, planning shows, and the like. After an immersive process of tracking and whittling down YSIR demos and carving out an idiosyncratic chamber-recording method for the album’s intentional wall-of-sound, the duo brought in touring drummer Spenser Gralla to play the songs as the band would on stage.
The album’s frenzied execution, akin to the group’s renowned live show, shines most of all in Mondal’s exhilarating vocals. Whereas previously, you might have heard a growl here and there on certain Sweeping Promises tracks, the band’s formidable singer shouts, roars, hits all sorts of tricky notes, and shreds her throat all over the record.
A shadow side exists alongside Sweeping Promises’ love for their artistic community—borne of weirdos channeling their misfit status into vibrant art and punk rock music, often passing through the revolving door that is their home studio. You Say I Romanticize takes the art-by-any-means-necessary ethos that Mondal and Schnug have developed over the years and turns the prompt upside down, landing on a personality epidemic that manifests across all ten tracks.
Sweeping Promises also recently announced North American headlining tour dates for the fall of 2026. YouSay I Romanticize follows the release of their acclaimed 2023 album Good Living Is Coming for You, which Rolling Stonedescribed as “…relentlessly catchy, gloriously low-fi punk.” GLICFY also appeared on Pitchfork, NPR, PASTE, and the BBC’s year-end lists, just to name a few.
What people are saying about Sweeping Promises: “Their sound rattles with reverb; compact basslines play off of surf-rock riffs, chipper analog synthesizers, and Mondal’s expansive vocal range. Against a terrain of post-punk revivalists, Sweeping Promises resemble the genuine article, combining the operatics of X-Ray Spex’s Poly Styrene with the campy professionalism of Blondie and Devo.” STEREOGUM
“The density of the hooks on these 10 songs, most under three minutes, is staggering, with basslines worthy of early Cure, slash-and-burn riffage, bleating sax, weirdo keyboards, drums that wallop without being showy, and Mondal’s voice which just seems to have gotten better over the last three years.” [Good Living Is Coming for You] Brooklyn Vegan
“…you’re hit with a streamlined barrage of crunchy guitar, bargain-bin synths, snappy drums, and, most critically, Lira Mondal’s titanic vocals. Her acrobatic, ear-shattering wail pirouettes to perfection across Good Living Is Coming for You…” Pitchfork
”Good Living Is Coming for You is a deliberate shake to the shoulders, a wake-up call, and a cautionary tale of what happens when you stay compliant. With unflinching scrutiny and refreshing candor, Sweeping Promises bring a sense of awareness to times that feel apocalyptic.” FLOOD

Sweeping Promises are currently hard at work on the follow-up to their acclaimed 2023 record Good Living Is Coming for You, which Rolling Stone described as “…relentlessly catchy, gloriously low-fi punk.” More news is coming sooner than you expect.

On Friday, June 30th, Sweeping Promises will release their astonishing new album, Good Living Is Coming For You, on Feel It Records in North America and Sub Pop for the rest of the world. Following the previous single releases of “Eraser” and “You Shatter” comes the arresting new video for the album’s title track, “Good Living Is Coming for You.”
Sweeping Promises’ Lira Mondal and Caufield Schnug on the new video: “For this video, we collaborated with one of our closest friends, experimental filmmaker Jessica Bardsley (Life Without Dreams, Goodbye Thelma). Drawing from the glamorous and bloodthirsty aesthetic of ‘70s and ‘80s horror films (Daughters of Darkness, The Hunger, The Lair of the White Worm, Dream Demon), the visual companion to “Good Living Is Coming for You” channels the song’s unshakable feeling of discontent and encroaching domestic doom through the confines of a DIY horror flick as seen by some nameless sleepless soul on late-night cable, the line between movie and infomercial blurred to infernal effect.”
Directed by Jessica Bardsley, the “Good Living Is Coming For You” video is available HERE (if you dare…).

What People are saying about Sweeping Promises: “‘Eraser,’ the lead single from the Lawrence, Kansas duo Sweeping Promises’ sophomore album Good Living Is Coming For You, is a rich punk arrangement set adrift with power-pop hooks and a gripping, catalytic back-beat.” [“Eraser” Best 50 Songs of 2023 (So Far)] - PASTE
“Sweeping Promises play relentlessly catchy, gloriously low-fi punk.” [“Eraser” The Best Songs of 2023 So Far] - ROLLING STONE
“Their specific brand of lo-fi post-punk is bolstered by its pop sensibilities, with singer Lira Mondal’s melodic howls driving the track.” [“Eraser”] - EXCLAIM!
“Gone are the utilitarian basslines, replaced by a warmth and coziness that still crackles with urgency. Mondal’s harmonies are tinny but effectively insistent, compact yet invigorating.” [The Five Best Songs of the Week (#2)] - STEREOGUM
“You don’t simply listen to Sweeping Promises — you move, you groove, you strike a pose with an effortlessly cool ‘tude.” [“Pain Without a Touch,” Nov. 2021] - NPR MUSIC
“…‘Hunger for a Way Out’ is an instant classic, thick with ‘80s retro-surf nostalgia and a jabbing ‘Isolation’-era Joy Division bass riff, deftly sidestepping pastiche with its forward-thinking DIY ethos both compassionate and furious with the ways of the world.” - NME (on Hunger for a Way Out, Aug. 2020)
