Nation of Language Shares “The Conversation,” A New Song Out Today

This past Spring, Nation of Language shared a striking cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Tunnel of Love album track “Tougher Than the Rest” which was released on a limited-edition 7” single (of 1000 copies) at the end of May 2026 (see April 14th single announcement). For its B-side, the band recorded “The Conversation,” an unreleased track from the Dance Called Memory sessions, which was produced by Nick Millhiser and mastered by Heba Kadry and is available now on all streaming services.

Nation of Language’s Ian Richard Devaney offers this on the song: “‘The Conversation’ is a song that’s been haunting me for a few years now - one of my personal favorites I’ve written, yet it’s never found a home on an album. It’s extremely contained in the sense that when I write out the lyrics it reads more like a standalone poem than most of our songs, and it dabbles in storytelling in a much different way than I’m used to doing. It’s a vignette, centered around two people whose lives are so intertwined, and have been moving towards this one conversation, this inflection point, where the things that need to be said might finally be said.”

The “Tougher Than The Rest” b/w “The Conversation” 7” single is also available now in North America through megamart.subpop.com, in the UK/EU from MegaMart Europe, Bandcamp and the band’s live shows (while supplies last).

Following a successful run of late Spring and early Summer European shows, Nation of Language have added new festival dates in South America to their tour schedule in support of their recent Sub Pop debut Dance Called Memory.

Nation of Language resumes touring this Thursday, July 9th in Ventura at the Ventura Music Hall and continues through Saturday, September 26th with a sold out show in Portsmouth, NH at 3S Artspace.

Nation of Language’s previously announced US shows for July include two Pacific Northwest co-headlining shows with Sub Pop labelmates Deep Sea Diver on Friday, July 17th in Forest Grove, OR at Grand Lodge, and Saturday, July 18th in Carnation, WA at Remlinger Farms. The band’s support trek with Death Cab For Cutie in the Midwest and Southwestern US will run from July 23rd to August 4th.

As for Nation of Language’s festival and headlining appearances in the EU, these include dates in the Czech Republic, Germany, Romania, Hungary, and Austria. The band will also play a series of shows in the UK, including a sold out, three-night residency in London at the Village Underground, Tuesday, August 18th-Thursday, August 20th.

Nation of Language Announce New 7” Single, Release Cover Version of “Tougher Than the Rest” (Bruce Springsteen)

Today, April 14th, 2026, Nation of Language is sharing a striking new cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Tunnel of Love album track “Tougher Than the Rest.” The song will also be available on a limited-edition 7” single (of 1000 copies) on Friday, May 29th, worldwide from Sub Pop. It can now be preordered in North America through megamart.subpop.com, in the UK/EU from MegaMart Europe, and Bandcamp. The “Tougher Than the Rest” single will also be available at the band’s live shows this summer (while supplies last).

Nation of Language’s Ian Richard Devaney offers this on the track, “Like so many young New Jersey residents, I grew up listening to Springsteen, but this song somehow slipped by me during that formative era. I was really only exposed to it within the last few years, and it’s followed me around since then.

“I can remember finishing a particularly emotional show somewhere deep in last year’s tour, and our sound engineer, Skinny, started playing it as our exit music. It caught me so hard that I stayed there, just offstage, and listened to the rest of the song blasting, mixed with the sounds of all of the people milling about the venue.

“When we ultimately endeavored that we might try doing our own version of the song, we luckily had a Yamaha CS-80 at our disposal, the same synth model which featured pretty heavily across the Tunnel of Love sessions back in ’87. Knowing we were working with some of the same textures as the original made it a little less daunting to cover Bruce.”

Following a successful run of spring shows in Mexico and Japan, Nation of Language are announcing new headlining and festival dates scheduled for the summer & early fall of 2026 in support of their recent Sub Pop debut Dance Called Memory.

The touring starts Thursday, June 11th in Porto, PT at Primavera Sound Porto Parque Da Cidade, and currently runs through Saturday, September 26 in Portsmouth, NH at 3S Artspace.

Nation of Language will join Sub Pop labelmates Deep Sea Diver for two Pacific Northwest co-headlining shows, Friday, July 17th in Forest Grove, OR at Grand Lodge, and Saturday, July 18th in Carnation, WA at Remlinger Farms. The band’s previously announced support trek with Death Cab For Cutie in the Midwest and Southwestern US will also run from July 23rd to August 4th.

As for Nation of Language’s EU festival and headlining appearances in the EU, these include dates in the Czech Republic, Germany, Romania, Hungary, and Austria. The band will also play a series of shows in the UK, including a three-night residency in London at the Village Underground, Tuesday, August 18th-Thursday, August 20th.

Then in September, Nation of Language will headline a run of North American shows that includes stops in Baltimore, Columbus, Toronto, Montreal, and a hometown performance Saturday, September 19th at Brooklyn Paramount.

Nation of Language Shares “Inept Apollo (Tom Sharkett Remix)”

Today, Wednesday, January 28th, Nation of Language is sharing a new rework of Dance Called Memory’s lead single “Inept Apollo” by UK artist Tom Sharkett of the band W.H. Lung. This rework takes the song’s new wave origins, ups the BPM and the funk, and turns it into an even more danceable sibling.

Nation of Language’s Ian Devaney has this to say on the track, “We’re big fans of WH Lung, as well as Tom’s excellent recent LCD Soundsystem rework, so we were super excited when he reached out saying he wanted to take a crack at a new mix of ‘Inept Apollo.’ Our initial enthusiasm only grew when we received the end product a couple months later and were able to test it out in a club environment a few times. Can confidently report it sounds fantastic in a loud and crowded room. Here’s hoping it sees its way to a few dance floors in 2026.”

Sharkett offers this on the remix, “I had an affinity with Nation of Language as soon as I heard their music. It felt like it came from the same place as the music I was making myself and with W. H. Lung, and the more of their music I heard, the more I felt it. It was hard initially to find a way in with remixing “Inept Apollo,” as I loved the original so much. I knew I wanted to nod to the connection between NYC and Manchester started by the artists and DJs I feel we both love, without even having to name check them. It had to be wonky, and it had to be loose and lively. Hope you enjoy!”

Nation of Language has also announced new 2026 international headlining, festival, and support dates. Their current tour schedule spans Sunday, February 15th in Monterrey, MX at Foro Tims through Thursday, August 27 - Saturday, August 29 for the Canela Party weekender in Málaga, ES.

What People Are Saying About Nation of Language’s
Dance Called Memory:
On Dance Called Memory, you won’t find a more gorgeous format of synth-heavy post-punk in any city between the Atlantic and Pacific O’s. The Brooklyn trio portion out plenty of dance floor candy, but also take a turn for the mellow on tracks like “Can You Reach Me?” and “Nights of Weight.” Thankfully, frontman Ian Richard Devaney continues to write songs for the end credits of John Hughes movies that were never made; singing “Darling, don’t forget my love” at the end of “Inept Apollo,” he extends his vocal range for maximum capital-Y Yearning. Epically sincere; sincerely epic.”

What People Are Saying About Nation of Language’s Dance Called Memory:
“The real deal…” ★★★★ MOJO

“The band’s fourth LP and Sub Pop debut is danceable, eccentric, and immaculate at once…” ★★★★All Music

“For Dance Called Memory, the trio — Devaney, his wife and right-hand synth wizard Aidan Noell, and bassist Alex MacKay — once more teamed with LCD Soundsystem/Holy Ghost! member Nick Millhiser as producer. Together, the crew pushed the edges of NOL’s sound, creating something expansive enough to capture the weight of grief and loss that coursed through these new songs.” Stereogum

Dance Called Memory, continues its study of synth-pop from the late 1970s and early ’80s. The new record adds more guitars to the mix, tempering the machine-made with a human touch.” New York Times

“It’s a fuzzy electronic project that’s both introspective and danceable, with flanged New Order–styled guitar parts sprinkled in to give their sound a refreshed feel.” FLOOD

“An instantly appealing synthpop track, melodic and understated. It’s a grower.” [“Inept Apollo”] BROOKLYN VEGAN

“The New York trio capture the tension between the need for creative expression and its futility by offering some romantic, rejuvenating synth pop.” [“Inept Apollo”] “100 Best Songs of 2025 (So Far),” Consequence of Sound

“There is something instantly transportive about Ian Richard Devaney’s voice, which leaps with an operatic ease, yet maintains a soft-focus diaphanousness as it curls around lyrical transmissions just vague enough to feel applicable to any situation.” [“Inept Apollo”] “Staff Pick,” EXCLAIM!

“…shades of my bloody valentine adorn the guitars, while the jagged post-punk aspects are illuminated with Human League style synths.” [“I’m Not Ready for the Change”] CLASH

“’I’m Not Ready For the Change’ is imbued with some psychedelic pop accents reminiscent of Animal Collective and MGMT.” Consequence of Sound

“It’s a blinky synth track with a rickety drum-machine beat and a whole lot of dreamy effects on the vocals and guitars. I’d say it fills up a room quite pleasantly.” [“I’m Not Ready for the Change”] STEREOGUM

“Ian Devaney’s vocals wash over a minimalist soundscape of bright synthesizers and oscillating strings, the sparse textures shining a spotlight on his yearning.” [“Under the Water”] “Best New Songs” - PASTE

“Further emphasizing the malleability of their synthetic pop impulses, this track initially appears to be a slow saunter through the woozy landscapes of ‘80s pop before allowing a bristling dynamic energy to carry it along to its conclusion.” [“In Your Head”] Beats Per Minute
