Last Month, The Bug Club released “Have U Ever Been 2 Wales,” a joyous ode to their beloved home country that features upbeat, regionally referential lyrics like “Have you ever been to Wales? It’s good, it’s goo-ooh-ooh-ooh-hood” and “…every choir from Caldicot to Treorchy will sing it proud.” The spirited song, doubtless soon to be the new ad jingle for Visit Wales, is also out now worldwide (including Wales) on all DSPs from Sub Pop.
The Bug Club has seen support from the likes of NME, BBC, KEXP, Bandcamp Daily, Brooklyn Vegan, PASTE, Stereogum, see/saw, Dusted, The Stranger Rosy Overdrive, Glide, and more. NME said of their 2024 release On the Intricate Inner Workings of the System…., “…its 11 songs crackle with incisive melodies and funny pop culture-addled lyrics – they reference The Great Escape’s Virgil Hilts one minute, and move on to the horror of Lonsdale slip on daps the next – but they’re in and out in under 26 minutes. Zero fat.”
More on The Bug Club’s Very Human Features:
The Bug Club are back, again, for their annual appointment at the garage rock makers’ market, where they’re flogging yet another pedigree record.
LP number four, Very Human Features, arrives June 13th, hot on the heels of the band’s first Sub Pop release, 2024’s On the Intricate Inner Workings of the System. That record saw the band continue their love affair with BBC Radio 6, start up a new one with KEXP thanks to a session with them, and crop up in the pages of the NME. Anything else from the bucket list? Oh yeah, festival slots including packing home ground Green Man’s Walled Garden to its non-existent rafters. Then shows across the US in those venues us Brits tend to hear about and that’s as far as we get. This record gives the band an excuse to continue their never-ending tour and feed their baying fans, engorged and expectant thanks to this band’s relentless record-releasing hot streak, a new batch of typically playful, riff-laden, smart Bug Club Tunes.
But first, a standalone single, because that’s how things are done here. “Have you ever been to Wales?”, asks the band in “Have U Ever Been 2 Wales.” If not, why not? It’s good. A new, discordant national anthem, if they didn’t already have a decent harmonious one. Oh, to be from a country where national pride is something other than the mark of a tosser. Starting as a classic, chugging chantalong, it’s interrupted by what sounds like an alien choir before they let rip. Think Dinosaur Jr. with a job at the tourist board. And Welsh. Definitely Welsh (read more at Sub Pop).

Today, Wednesday, March 26th Lael Neale is sharing “Down On The Freeway,” her new Motorik-powered single and official video. The track is a standout from Altogether Stranger, her expansive forthcoming new album, out May 2nd, 2025 worldwide on Sub Pop.
Neale offers this on the song and its haute visual, which she stars in and also directed: “This song is specific to Los Angeles. The drum machine really wrote the song. It conjures the endless sea of cars. Moving, bottlenecked, bumper to bumper. I’m always amazed that so many of us have somewhere to go. The video appeared in my mind’s eye as soon as we recorded the song. I saw that cars on the freeway are like people walking in a fashion show, pacing back and forth. The fashion show is the epitome of movement going nowhere. The video is a part of a larger story being told by the album and accompanying film, in which my character is an alien bewildered by the modern way of life on Earth. The QR code I ingest at the end of this video suggests that humanity is caught up in an escapist fantasy of techno-consumerism.”
Lael Neale’s headlining and festival date run for Spring and Summer 2025 in support of Altogether Stranger has been extended. In April, Neale and bandmate Blakeslee will perform two US album release shows – Thursday, April 10th in Los Angeles at Zebulon, and Friday, April 25th in New York City, NY at Public Records.
Then, in May, they’ll head over to the UK and EU, beginning May 10th in Dublin, IE at Workman’s Cellar and running through Saturday, June 14th in Hilvarenbeek, NL at Best Kept Secret Festival. Highlights for this announcement include support on headlining shows from collaborator Guy Blakeslee as Entrance (select dates*, May 10th-June 12th); A new in-store at London’s Rough Trade East (May 2nd); EU festival appearances at Stockholm’s Echo Three Fest (May 24th), and Guastalla, IT’s Handmade Festival (June 8th). More on Lael Neale’s Altogether Stranger: Lael Neale’s minimalist drone pop draws inspiration from the Transcendentalists, the alienation of modern life, and a rich array of musical influences—ranging from Dionne Warwick and John Lennon to primitive American gospel and Spacemen 3. Her expansive new record, Altogether Stranger, was written and recorded in the early morning quiet of Los Angeles. Clocking in at just 32 minutes, the 9-song LP covers an unexpected breadth of musical and lyrical terrain—from garage rock nursery rhymes and creation myths to Motorik dance dirges and solitary Omnichord meditations. A brilliant lyricist, Neale has a unique ability to uncover the extraordinary within the mundane, tackling themes of polarity that recur throughout her work—country vs. city, humanity vs. technology, isolation vs. society. This album is her third collaboration with producer Guy Blakeslee who helps expand the tonal palette while staying true to Neale’s commitment to the raw immediacy and hand-made intimacy of home recording (read more at Sub Pop).

Today, April 3rd, Australian group Girl and Girl has shared a new stand-alone track entitled “Okay.”
Frontman Kai James shares on the track, “You give yourself enough time, things will be okay, sometimes not great, or even good, but more often than not, things, at the very least, end up okay. And that’s okay, it’s okay to just be okay. That’s what the song’s about.”
The band is currently main support on a North American tour opening for Naked Giants. Their run of shows began on March 26 & 27th at Treefort Festival in Boise, with supporting dates with Naked Giants running from March 29th - April 26th. Ending with 3 headline shows on April 29, 30, and May 1st in Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver. See below for a complete list of shows.

This new track follows the release of the stand-alone single “The Cow” and the band’s debut full-length Call A Doctor, which Rolling Stone Australia called “emotional mayhem that’s relatable and very catchy.”
What people are saying about Girl and Girl: “A fantastic debut from a sparkly and singular new band.” [Call The Doctor] NME
“A perfect dose of indie – punk rock at its best.” - [“Hello”] Happy Mag
“A warped mix of Talking Heads, Rolling Blackouts and bits of post-punk but led by a man with a mullet and one of their aunts plays drums in the band!” - [SXSW Review] BBC 6 Music
“Brisbane four-piece Girl and Girl are ones to watch in the world of sharp-tongued raucous-riffed garage rock…Girl and Girl’s all too rare multigenerational collaboration brings a fresh angle on the post-Strokes garage rock sound.” KUTX Radio
“Girl and Girl recall the stalwarts of 2010s garage rock, their affinity with jangly guitars and buoyant rhythms undercut by feverishly intense playing and a cloying sense of claustrophobia.” [Call The Doctor] DIY
“…every member of Girl and Girl is too young to have experienced the garage rock revivalism of Y2K firsthand, save Aunty Liss, the drummer who supports her nervy nephews in this band of Australian post-punk traditionalists. Fronted by the wiry Kai James — handsome and jittery, never reclusive — the group treated sacred post-punk texts as if they were a common language when they played the 13th Floor, giving their barbed hooks and sideways riffs real kick. They’re carrying a torch without succumbing to nostalgia or formalism, all because they’re intoxicated by the noise they make.” [Best of SXSW 2024] Rolling Stone
On June 27th, Frankie Cosmos will release their latest long player,Different Talking, available on CD/LP/DSPs worldwide from Sub Pop.
Different Talking, the sixth and, so far, best album by NYC indie-rock four-piece Frankie Cosmos, seems to exist across time and space, as we all kind of do. It’s a collection of fragments and memories, remembered places, and reinterpreted feelings that adds up to a lucent, humming whole: a sturdy, worldly indie-rock record about aging and the passage of time that nonetheless manages to feel sharply current.
The current configuration of Frankie Cosmos features Greta Kline, Alex Bailey, Katie Von Schleicher, and Hugo Stanley. Kline is the only constant, but Stanley, Bailey, and Von Schleicher are crucial collaborators, and to use the names “Greta Kline” and “Frankie Cosmos” interchangeably would be incorrect. Kline remains the primary songwriter, and the music on Different Talking is arranged by the band as a whole, but this is the first album to be self-tracked by the unit with no external studio producers.
Lyrically, Different Talking may be some of Kline’s most insular work, but musically, it’s the most varied and richly textured Frankie Cosmos album, filled with country-fried noodling and tassels of synth and imposing walls of sound. “We’d go to any length to get Greta’s songs right, and she’s generous with songs, so we have a lot of freedom to arrange them,” says Katie Von Schleicher. “It’s a rare talent to have, with rare freedom given, and the course hasn’t changed.”
Lead single “Vanity” exemplifies a perfectionist’s approach to production and songwriting: Von Schleicher correctly describes it as “a fucking pop anthem,” but does a pop anthem ever contain this much attention to detail? “Vanity” is spare and busy at the same time, its second-album-Strokes chorus blossoming between passages of minimalist curiosity that recall the earliest Frankie Cosmos tapes. It’s one of the songs on Different Talking that doesn’t have a clear object, perhaps a result of its genesis: “I started writing it one evening while I walked (~6.5 miles) from Tompkins Square Park to Sunset Park, speaking directly to the universe and pleading to be considered by it,” says Kline. “It feels like it encompasses this push and pull between adult and kid, government and governed, planet and blade of grass.”
Watch the official video for “Vanity,” which features footage compiled during the recording of Different Talking and filmed by Frankie Cosmos members Greta and Alex. Click here to watch.
Different Talking is now available to pre-order on vinyl/CD/digital formats from Sub Pop. A Loser Edition LP on Opaque Red is available through the Sub Pop Mega Mart (North America) and White Vinyl via the Mega Mart 2 (UK/EU) and your local record store.
More about Frankie Cosmos Different Talking: Frankie Cosmos lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter Greta Kline has long been heralded as one of contemporary indie music’s most deft and most necessary writers, but on Different Talking, her lyrics soften out slightly, the wry cynicism that defined recent records now giving way to an acknowledgment of the awesome, and necessary, fallibility of the human brain and heart.
To classify Different Talking as a return to form, or at least a return to the lush directness of earlier Frankie Cosmos records, would be rude but also wholly incorrect: as Different Talking makes clear, you can never return to the comfort and bravery of your early twenties, but that person always kind of lives inside you, no matter how much you change. Different Talking is about finding that person, honoring them, and learning from them. “A lot of the album is about being grown up and figuring out how to know yourself – like, ‘What is moving on?’” says Kline. “How do we move on when we’re addicted to a cycle of haunting our own past? Writing songs is just the way through that.”
Kline has been a fixture of the American indie underground since her late teens when her prolific Bandcamp releases and 2014 indie-label debut Zentropy led her to be dubbed “the poet laureate of New York City DIY.” A tag like that is a lot for young shoulders to take on, but it’s hard to deny the singular influence she has had on contemporary pop music. If the idea of a young woman picking up a synth in her bedroom, putting a couple of songs on the internet, and quickly becoming a superstar is now de rigeur, it’s because Kline – along with a handful of other artists and writers – normalized and exalted ideas of (female) DIY genius long before they were pinned to moodboards in major-label marketing offices (read full bio at Sub Pop).

Hundreds of impressive applications came across our virtual desks this year, which made finding our Loser Winners no easy task. Our Looser Chooser (TM) scholarship committee spent hours reading through an exceptional bunch of applications and at the end of a very difficult decision-making process, the committee has come up with three ultramega-OK, life-affirming scholarship winners. Congratulations to the winners and a huge, heartfelt thanks to all who took the time to apply, you have inspired us beyond belief!
In no particular order, we are thrilled to present our Loser Scholarship winners:
Blue from Seattle, WA blew (pun intended) us away with their short films and music video. We were inspired by Blue’s ability to break out of conformity and love that they found community in the local punk scene. We can’t wait to one day watch the feature film you will no doubt direct. We know the music in it will be kick-ass! Congratulations Loser!
Kelsey is a musician, artist and self-described “lifelong weirdo” from Portland, OR. Kelsey’s essay was beautifully written and immediately drew us in. We loved Kelsey’s artwork and were impressed with the years of musicianship under her belt. We look forward to seeing what you go on to do. Thanks for sharing your world with us, Loser!
Paloma is photographer from Seattle, WA who has experimented with different techniques and styles over the years. Paloma’s community involvement really inspired us, especially how she uses her photography to document protests and gatherings. We were impressed with how many organizations and events she’s involved with. On top of that, we were especially drawn to her film portraits. Thank you for all you do, Loser!
Today, Lael Neale is sharing “Wild Waters,” a new single and official video from Altogether Stranger, her new, expansive forthcoming album, out this Friday, May 2nd, 2025 worldwide on Sub Pop.
“Wild Waters” is also a vignette from The Altogether Stranger, a visual accompaniment to the album “Altogether Stranger,” which will premiere on YouTube on Thursday, May 1st. Starring Neale and written and directed in collaboration with producer and accompanist Guy Blakeslee, the 34-minute film weaves together nine music videos, capturing a world in which Neale, in a mirrored jumpsuit, plays an interdimensional being on a mission to restore harmony to humanity with her cosmic Omnichord.
It includes guest appearances from Ian Svenonius (as God) and choreography and movement direction by Sandi Denton (who also leads The Rated Z Dancers, who appear throughout).
Neale says of the “Wild Waters” visual and The Altogether Stranger…film: “The video for ‘Wild Waters’ was a collaboration with choreographer & dancer Sandi (Denton). I had this vision of dancers playing the part of interdimensional beings performing a dance that would open a portal, calling my character through. In perfect synchronicity, when I approached Sandi with the idea, she had already been building a two-person dance that fit seamlessly. I love working with Sandi for this reason.”
Neale continues, “While the album was made by just me and Guy, the really fun part of creating this film was getting to include our friends in the production and experiment alongside some of the many visionary artists who are active in Los Angeles right now to bring the story to life. The guiding ethos for both the record and the film was an intuitive (vs. technical) approach, embracing the primitive simplicity of making things by hand.”
Also on release date, Neale fans will see new official videos for remaining Altogether Stranger songs “All Good Things Will Come To Pass,” “Come On,” “Sleep Through The Long Night,” “New Ages,” “All Is Never Lost,” and “There From Here,” arrive on YouTube.
Lael Neale’s headlining and festival date run for Spring and Summer 2025 in support of Altogether Stranger continues later this week with a release day instore on Friday, May 2nd at London’s Rough Trade East and runs through Saturday, June 14th in Hilvarenbeek, NL at Best Kept Secret Festival. They will also support Sub Pop label mates Beach House on June 1st in Brussels, Belgium, and June 2nd in Lyon, France. Tickets for these shows are on sale now.
