Sub Pop Staff and Artists Best of 2014 Lists

Topten 2014

2014 is coming to a close, which means that another wonderful (read: almost entirely not shitty!) chapter has come and gone in the annals of Sub Pop Records. It was nothing short of a banner year for us here at Sub Pop HQ; we released and reissued a couple dozen records, we welcomed a few new employees and artists into the family, and we opened a goddamn store in the Seattle Airport, all in the span of 12 months. We’re amazing. At least our loved ones think so. Anyway, as has become tradition, we’ve polled our roster of talented artists and staff about what made their 2014 special. What we landed on was a no-holds-barred, best-of 2014 list featuring the anythings and everythings that our big weird family loved this year. Peruse the lists below. (First Sub Pop artists, and then employees.)

Enjoy, and happy holidays from Sub Pop to you. - x

Sub Pop Artist End of Year Lists:

Daughn Gibson

There was a lot of great music this year, especially lots of new bands or bands, that I never heard of before, like the wonderful Jam Money, Virginia Wing, Ultimate Painting and Death + Vanilla, all with equally adventurous and haunting music.
Shackleton is on another planet with his futuristic take on Kraut-electronics and Terry Riley, and Odd Nosdam did an incredible production for the new Kenny Dennis-LP. And there was so much more…Dean Blunt sampling the Pastels, the Roots, OOIOO, Fennesz…. and so many wonderful reissues.
And of course: Kathleen Hanna forever!

Virginia Wing - “Measures of Joy”

Ultimate Painting -”s.t.”

“1970s Algerian Folk and Pop” (Sublime frequencies)

Top Ten Greatest Instagram Interactions of 2014 (in no order)

1. The SXSW Okayplayer showcase with Erykah Badu, Thundercat, Cody ChestnuTT, SZA, Daley, Liam Bailey, Christian Tiger School, Young Fathers, Roman GianArthur, Deep Cotton & Petite Noir.

Christian Tiger School deejayed for us and Erykah Badu said she loved us. Very bad ass!!

2. Meeting the lovely ladies of Broad City at the Planned Parenthood Fundraiser in NY. Such funny sweethearts.

3. Afro Punk two times. Performing w/ Shabazz Palaces is always church. Then our DJ set on this massive Red Bull truck was ultra fly. We even boogied with Zoe Kravitz for a magical moment.

4. Filming our second music video with Tiona was super #blackexcellence and #epicblackness. We took a sacred journey with artists who inspire us. We got to go inside Sun Ra’s house.

5. Our first time in China. We traveled to Shang Hai and Beijing. Girl group poses on the Great Wall and of course going down the slide.

6. Seeing KING live at MoCADA’s Soul Of Brooklyn. These ladies turned the park into a family reunion. At the end we had to take a KING & QueenS photo!

7. Expanding Black Weirdo to Minneapolis & DC. A bunch of new DJs & performers including Just Nine & Underdog. Both cities were unique but of course a Soul Train line broke out!

8. Meeting Meshell Ndegeocello & India Arie on different occasions. Both amazing women who’ve inspired our sound and are very supportive! HEART EYE EMOJIS

9. Touring with our new DJ Mursi Layne has been so good for us this year. She’s provided the perfect balance between our crazy asses.

10. Interviewing Aaron Neville with Okayplayer was so elegant and important to us. We met up at A-1 Records and picked his very experienced intelligent mind about music and spirituality. He was so warm and encouraging.

5 Great Sub Pop Things (aka ICYMI):

clipping. – Knees On the Ground, a track in response to the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson, MO and resulting protests; don’t forget to read their accompanying statement

The Notwist – Kong video for the catchy as hell single from their textured release Close to the Glass; fun game, play this track at a party and have people guess who the artist is, if anyone guesses correctly, call them “Poindexter” for the rest of their glory-filled life

Rose Windows – There is a Light video for their single of the same name released this summer; be not afraid friends, the cult cliché video is alive and well (see also, J Mascis – Every Morning video, from his release Tied to a Star; and watch for the cameo at 2:00 to see The Man, who inevitably takes it all down)

Shabazz Palaces – Motion Sickness theatrical video, not to mention the out-of-this-world flawless album from which it appeared, Lese Majesty

THUMPERS – perform Together Now live in-studio at KEXP, a song from these Brits’ smooth release Galore; also, don’t sleep on their track Devotee (feat. Jena Malone)

5 Great Non-Sub Pop Things (aka What I Spent My Hard Earned Money On):

Against Me! – Transgender Dysphoria Blues album; not that anyone would expect anything less from frontwoman Laura Jane Grace, but this album is a completely unfiltered, unapologetic transgender story; check them out performing FUCKMYLIFE666 on Letterman (spoiler: Dave fails to mention the song title)

Banner Pilot – album Souvenir, including the song/lyric video for Modern Shakes, which features found footage of 1950s era skid row in Minneapolis, the band’s hometown

Chris Cresswell (of the Flatliners) – Self Titled album (One Week Records acoustic release); check him out performing Meet Me in the Shade from this album; it’s a gem, and he’s Canadian, so if you listen real close you can hear the politeness in his voice

The Menzingers – Rodent, from probably my favorite album of the year, top-to-bottom, Rented World; this particular song compares the existence of a mouse in a house to that of a bar-dwelling band member in a relationship; in concludes “Me and the rodent in the wall have more in common after all / I am only bad news for you”; classic!

Morning Glory – album War Psalms; check out the video for Punx Not Dead, I Am featuring a cameo from “The Rent Is Too Damn High” Guy; this album blew my mind, it was one of those where I knew nothing about them before this, so I had no expectations, but it’s so cohesive, and earnest, and vibrant; I highly recommend it if you’re into that sorta thing

5 Great Under-the-Radar Things (aka I Know About These Artists, You Should Check ‘Em Out Too):

The Accidentals – these youngsters from the Mitten State have written and created more lovely music in their short careers than most could even dream to do; their Bandcamp page features their most recent full length release, Bittersweet; also check out their live cover of Cold War Kids’ Hang Me Out to Dry, it’s legit

Betty and the Boy – listen to their album The Wreckage on their Bandcamp page; I saw them perform as a duo at The Sunset in Ballard as part of the One Week Records Tour; great Pacific NW acoustic folk

Perdition – here’s their single …The Pursuit of Sexiness from their Bandcamp page, which I think was released as a 7” just for their spring European tour, super rare (unless you live in Europe, I guess); totally into the sound, songwriting, and sexiness (what else could you possibly want?; don’t be greedy)

The Unfit – a small, rough sample of their blunt, intelligent thrash is available on their Soundcloud page; looking forward to more of this…hopefully

Wild Throne – their EP Blood Maker is heavy shit, literally and figuratively; literally, as in progressive heavy metal shredding; and figuratively as in it’s far from shit, it’s actually quite good

5 Other Great Things (aka Here’s Some Other Cool Stuff From 2014, According to Me):

Beastie Boys v. GoldieBloxTM Lawsuit Settlement – resulted from unauthorized use of a derivative of a BBs song in a GB commercial; the settlement included: (1) a public apology from GB and (2) GB paying of a portion of their revenues to charities of the BB’s choice; a pro-artist copyright law smack down

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver – look, look how fun, interesting, and timely television journalism can be, LOOK!

LOSER Sub Pop Scholarship Review Committee – what a great thing our HQ leaders have done in offering annual scholarships to WA and OR high school seniors going on to college, but it pales in comparison to the great things these local youths are doing for the arts in their communities; I got to see first-hand just how many amazing, dedicated, and talented kids there are and it was inspiring to be involved; here are this year’s winners!

Seahawks Win SuperBowl TM XLVIII – including all the subsequent hullabaloo on the streets of the Emerald City; plus, Marshawn Lynch is a boss

That’s Legislation, Holmes – for the first time ever, WA State Supreme Court holds WA State Legislature in contempt of court for failing to provide constitutionally adequate funding for WA public schools as outlined in the McCleary decision

Things I Loved in 2014:

  • Discovering estate sales, and going every weekend!

  • Almost six months at Sub Pop!

  • The Arch, the City Museum, paddle boating around Forest Park, Meramac Caverns, a ghost tour of the Lemp Mansion, Ted Drewes, flea markets in Springfield, and two full days of riding roller coasters at Six Flags in Missouri.

  • Falling in love with the Seattle and St. Louis World’s Fairs and the Space Needle.

  • Jewelry shopping, seeing the world’s biggest dreamcatcher and saguaro cactus for the first time, and eating a navajo taco at Jerry’s Cafe in Gallup, NM.

  • Spending 24 hours in Nashville and making it to the Grand Ole Opry, Bryan White’s 20th anniversary fan club party, and the Country Music Hall of Fame.  Also, food at the Wild Cow and a color photo booth at Third Man Records!

  • Having a tintype photo taken in the parking lot of a fancy bar, seeing The Zombies/photographing The Fresh & Onlys (with broken equipment!) at Psych Fest, eating vegan ice cream with glitter sprinkles with my cousin, seeing the bats fly from under the bridge, and breakfast at Counter Culture with a big group of Denver friends in Austin, Texas.

  • A day off in San Francisco visiting the Musée Mécanique arcade, Ripley’s mirror maze, Fisherman’s wharf, Haight-Ashbury, Chinatown, and staying in the fanciest hotel I’ve ever stayed in, in the middle of the longest move of my life.

  • Discovering my love of original photo booths and taking at least one every month this year.

  • A very fun, cold, and colorful photo shoot with Oozing Wound for Thrill Jockey, beluga whales at the Shedd aquarium, Wooly Mammoth, a free day at the Surgical Museum, Lincoln Park Conservatory, and the Chicago diner again and again.

  • Visiting the Polyvinyl office in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois to meet the nicest people ever and a stop for lunch with the ladies of Bellwether Manufacturing/SC Distribution in Bloomington, Indiana.

  • Exploring old architecture in Detroit and french fries at Luci and Ethel’s.

  • Showing my favorite person around Colorado for the first time and visiting Casa Bonita, Lakeside, going bowling with my mom, the dinosaur museum, visiting the Colorado National Monument, four-wheeling on Douglas Pass, fossil hunting, shooting guns with my dad, hanging with my grandma, Watercourse and City ‘o’ City, and seeing my very best friends.

  • KIRO radio while sitting in traffic to and from work.

  • Night swimming in Olympia and Boston Harbor jellyfish and phosphorescent plankton.
