PANDERING TO THE LOCALS JUNE ‘07

3421

The Seattle Times said in 2004 that “Few things say summer in the Northwest like the image of downy youngsters with laptops chaining themselves to old-growth trees.” Salty’s Seafood Restaurant’s website proclaims that “Summer in the Northwest brings sunny, warm weather and long days with star-studded evenings.” While neither of these generalized statements speak the whole truth about how awesome June is here, it goes without saying that we’re all so psyched, we’re practically crapping our pants. Allentown, PA’s Pissed Jeans know all about being psyched—their monumental new full-length, Hope for Men, is out on June 5th. The Austin Chronicle’s right-on description:

“Over massive Jesus Lizard-y guitar riffs, oft-shirtless singer Matt Korvette shouts about his “fantasy world,” where he’s a “special guy” who eats pizza and watches videos.”

Jennifer Gentle know about being psyched, too, but in a different, psychedelic sort of way. Their intense opus The Midnight Room is out June 19th, and multi-instrumentalist Marco Fasolo created the whole thing in his creepy (aka famous for its previous owner’s suicide by rifle) Ectoplasmic Studio, which is a house situated in the foggy plains of Northern Italy. It’s got distinctively Italian melodies, a primitive rock influence, and heaps of bizarro color.

Also, new in ye olde Sub Poppe Shoppe: a new Thermals 7" for A Pillar of Salt!

Basically, get ready for a sweet, sweet summer, losers!

Jennifer Gentle vs. China: Round the Second

3324

As improbable as it may seem, our own Jennifer Gentle (who are from Italy, remember) is soon to embark upon their 2nd Chinese tour in three months! Back in March of this year, and arranged through some magical means by the folks at CinaOggi, the band first went over to China for a handful of dates, and apparently they went over with audiences there like crazy (evidence of which can, of course, be found here on Youtube…).

So, naturally, they are going back. To China. This time the dates were arranged in collaboration with the folks at Max & Co. And, here they are…

June 15 Starlive, Beijing, China
June 16 Max & Co. fashion party, Beijing, China
June 17 Mao Live House, Beijing, China
June 23 Absolut House, Shanghai, China

“I love you, I protect you”

All of this will make much more sense once you see the Chinese condom advertisement/PSA which feature’s the track “I Do Dream You” from Jennifer Gentle’s last album Valende

Right? Right!

And, also, while we’re here, it is worth mentioning that the new Jennifer Gentle album, The Midnight Room will be out on June 19th, and you can (and should) pre-order it now here. The new album is a darkly psychedelic marvel and you should not be without it. In the proof dept., we offer not only the song “Electric Princess” from the new album, which you can listen to yourself here, but also the following early and excellent review from the fine folks at Austin’s Waterloo Records

A new Jennifer Gentle record (who are a band and not a girl). I’ve been wondering when this was coming ‘cause their last album was one of my favorites of 2005. It was one of those rare times where you pick up a record you know nothing about because it looks interesting and then it turns out to be exactly what you’ve wanted to hear for awhile and you get really excited and possessive since you’re the one who discovered it so it’s more “yours” than anyone else’s. (breath) I figured I wouldn’t tell you anything about the new album and you could just take a chance, get it and feel like you’d discovered on your own but you probably won’t do that, will you?
I want to stay away from comparisons to horror flicks, haunted houses and spooky amusement parks ‘cause I don’t want to give the impression that this is a campy listen. These songs are intelligent arrangements of twangy guitars, hollow vocals, sinister organ and a minimal, well placed rhythm section. Assimilating European psych, American rock n roll, Italian soundtracks and spaghetti westerns, The Midnight Room_, while descriptively weird, is a well-constructed mix of influences and a wholly accessible and enjoyable record. This is Jennifer Gentle’sgentle best record yet and even though I’ve been waiting awhile for this, I’m getting just as excited and possessive about this record too.

Jennifer Gentle - Electric Princess

3301

Jennifer Gentle have turned out some amazingly compositional ghostly pop tunes on their new album The Midnight Room. This little number, Electric Princess is so well orchestrated that you’ll get lost in it’s web of guitar hooks and piano twinkles before you know what hit you.

PANDERING TO THE LOCALS MAY ‘07

Who’s handsome and furry all over? Not your mom, silly, the Handsome Furs! About-to-be-married couple Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade) and Alexei Perry formed the band in the winter of 2005, and toured Europe before they even had a record out. Their debut album, called Plague Park (lovingly referred to in World HQ as Plaque Park_, which I guess would be a park in Candy Land, or possibly an amusement park designed by dentists to frighten children into a consistent dental care regimen…) is out May 22nd. It is dark and minimal and catchy as shit, and is the perfect foil for the impending pesky, sunny summer, what with its “cheeriness” and “positivity." You can pre-order it now-ish, right here. With the help of the Mighty Canadian Government, Dan and Alexei made a wicked scary, Twin Peaks-y video for the song “Dumb Animals”, which you can view HERE0wutqc.

Also, F your I, the word for Sub Pop Summer ’07 is BANANAS. Why? Because we’ll have new full-lengths from not just the H. Furs, but also from Pissed Jeans, Jennifer Gentle, Patton Oswalt, Tiny Vipers, The Brunettes, and Kinski. And (!), there will be new singles from The Thermals, CSS, and Iron & Wine. Thankfully, during summertime in the Pacific Northwest, the sun rises early and doesn’t set until around 9:30 PM, which means we have nearly double the daylight hours, so getting out of the office at seven won’t be as harsh as it is when it’s pitch black outside. You’ll want to keep checking Sub Pop Dot Com for More Exciting News!
