Sub Pop’s 2013 [ahem] “Top Ten” Lists!

14039

Over the years it seems that the classic, tried and true, end-of-the-year top ten list has grossly mutated from a well thought out list of meticulously ranked full-length records into what has become an self-serving, unidentifiable mess of whatever the shit it is that people want to rank, or in some cases, not even bother to rank or narrow down into discernible, digestible lists of information; music journalism and criticism is truly in a pathetic and sad state of affairs.

With that said, here are our self-serving, 2013 “Top Ten” lists for your reading (and judging) pleasure! Please to enjoy.

Dee Dee of Dum Dum Girls:
DD’s TOP TEN from 2013 (not always their origin but rather my discovery of and obsession with) —

ARTIST: Jessica Pratt. Her album from last year is my favorite thing; I think she is this otherworldly angel who can do no wrong.

CITY: NYC. I’ve lived here for over two years but never had the time to really establish my apartment as home. With the forced time off from touring everything changed. I set up a new life here, managed to collect a handful of new friends, and just generally feel very tapped into what for me a is a creative and motivating atmosphere. Too fucking expensive though, a vampire city.

COCKTAIL: The “Angry Gallagher” at The Smile in NYC. My friend Raquel works there and aside from the great food, the drinks are fantastic. This one is tequila based with a the same sorta kick as getting those Mexican dried watermelon pieces dusted in chili powder.

RECORD: Dirty Beaches’ double album Drifters/Love Is The Devil … not even biased cuz my label released, just that astoundin

CAMERA: Spectra Polaroid. My friend Tamaryn shot me with one for an interview piece and I liked watching the long color development process.

ENCOUNTER: Had a drink with Gaspar Noe in St. Marks.

BOOK: KLF Manual

CASSETTE TAPE: The Smiths’ Strangeways, Here We Come as recently warped in Crocodiles’ van. It makes you feel like you’re underwater drowning in its perfection.

WEED: AK47

FILM: Beyond The Black Rainbow for its insane visuals. James Orlando (Bullett Magazine), who shot my cover and press photos, recommended it after that very long photoshoot and I went home, got stoned, and tripped the fuck out.

Pat Schowe of Rose Windows
Music (in no particular order)
Leonard Cohen ‘Death of a Ladies’ Man’ ( The drum sound they got on the title track is unmatched, the kick drum sounds like the dying heart beat of the ladies’ man himself)
The Band ‘Self Titled’
Sun City Girls ‘Torch of the Mystics’ (we may not be a band if it wasn’t for this band and particularly this album. It turns long desert drives into not so long and beautiful desert drives)
Fela Kuti & Egypt 80 ‘Live in Detroit 1986’ (greatest live album without a doubt)
Thelonious Monk ’It’s Monk’s Time’ (‘Stuffy Turkey’ drum solo is bananas)
Neil Young ‘After the Goldrush’ (‘On the Beach’ is really weird and cool too)
Steely Dan ‘Aja’ ( it’s like drummer ear porn, and I’m not even sure I know what that means)
Bill Callahan ‘Dream River’ ( this entire album is fantastic, but even if you purchased it for the guitar line/tone in the song ‘Ride my Arrow’ it’d be well worth it)
Robert Johnson ‘The Complete Recordings’ (like…duh)
Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band ‘Bluejeans and Moonbeams’ (the song ‘Observatory Crest’ sounds like it was written by David Lynch for Tom Waits to sing, if that makes sense… It does if you listen to it)

There Will Be Blood
The Exorcist
Pumpkin Head (yes, it’s good)

Ryan McPhun of The Ruby Suns
I’ve been a weather/temperature enthusiast since I can remember. I grew up in the brutally mild climes of SoCal and then shifted to the ever so slightly wilder Auckland, NZ. Over the last couple of years I’ve been spending more and more time in the great continent of Europe. More specifically, Oslo, where I now reside. The weather here is way different than the other coastal towns I’ve repped in the past and as such I’m more intrigued and psyched by weather and it’s corresponding temperature than ever before.
Though quite snow-centric, there have been some pretty dope temps this year and here are 10 such dope temps that come to mind.

1. -7C/19.4F January, 2013. Instead of having a pre tour band meeting we went tobogganing down a mountain in Oslo called the Korketrekkeren (the Corkscrew). Look it up on youtube. You go crazy fast on these little plastic deathcrafts and slowing down is way harder than it should be.

2. 28C/82.4F October, 2013. As daylight hours shrunk and the mercury plummeted in Oslo, so did my intercontinental flying standards as I scrounged for a seat on a Ryan Air flight to Valencia, Spain to visit a good friend in small village called Chelva not too far inland. We cooked good food, drank cheap Spanish beer, worked on each other’s new music, went swimming, went hiking (shirtless; this is significant because Oslo was already around freezing point most days) and generally just wore shorts. Upon my return to Oslo as I spilled out onto the tarmac from the Boeing 737 with the ‘popped’ wingtips, I was greeted cheerfully by the season’s first snow (it was -3C/26.6F)

3. -4C/24.8F February, 2013. It was in Lausanne, Switzerland that we ascertained the correct temperature and amount of snowfall to be able to nail hella gnarly powerslides down a steep city street using a 10 seater splitter van instead of a skateboard. Now THAT shit was cray. For those ignorant to skateboarding jargon, a power slide is “a 4 wheel slide usually meant to stop the skateboard. It’s performed by gaining speed and shifting the body 90 degrees while leaning the body back. The hands do not touch the ground while performing a powerslide.” Miraculously we didn’t hit any other cars or people during this super sick trick we totally killed.

4. -12C/10.4F January, 2013. NYE. I went snowbathing in a remote area in central Norway called Gala. Through sheer willpower, blazing fireside heat, and Aquavit (a methylated spirit/rubbing alcohol type traditional Norwegian spirit) I managed to take off my clothes and pretend that the banks of fresh powdered snow outside this tiny cabin in the mountains was a swimming pool.

5. 25C/77F May, 2013 Auckland weather can be deceptively warm. On paper, 25 degrees doesn’t seem like much but if you’re standing in the sun for a minute that’s another story. Thanks to significant Ozone depletion in the Antarctic region that also affects NZ (Go USA!), burn time in summertime Auckland can be as low as 6 or 7 minutes! NZ boasts the highest skin cancer rate in the world and 1 in 10 Aucklanders has had Melanoma (my Dad! he lived though :) . So if you’re hangin’ in the sun on what seems to be a pretty mellow day, just remember 10 minutes on Takapuna beach is the equivalent to an hour grabbin’ some rays at Malibu, bra.

6. -25C/-13F December 2012. Vinstra, Central Norway. That’s my cold record.

7. -1C/30.2F November 2012. Near Arjaeng, Sweden. We were filming the ‘Kingfisher Call Me’ video outside all day for two days. The daytime temp was around 0 to -3 but at night it was a fair bit colder. One of our ideas for the vid was for my character to be digging for things in the ground. The earth being frozen made that a wee bit difficult.

8. 22C/71.6F May, 2013. I’ve been able to visit my mother in Ventura, CA around twice a year the last 5 years which has been rad. During these trips I generally try to surf every day, hang with the moms, and look at my complete sets of Marvel cards that I thought would be worth more these days given Marvel’s newfound megastardom due to their recent acquisition and hyper exploitation by their new strict army dad Disney.

9. -10C/14F February, 2013. Kansas was receiving it’s highest snowfall in 15 years which was hopefully kind of fun for them but we were trying to drive through it and that didn’t work due to the closures of most of the main highways. We had to cancel our show at the Record Bar that night in Kansas City which we were bummed about. The next task was trying to get to Minneapolis for the next show. We ended up driving most of the way to Minneapolis from midstate Kansas on deserted two lane country roads. Great way to see the country.

10. 20C/68F July, 2013. One of the best parts about Norway’s unrivaled arts funding is the free booze. One opening even had cases of beer just plopped on the table and any old bro could rock up and dig in. A lot of the art is great too. There are heaps of free openings happening all the time and in my period of writing/recording new music and not making money in perhaps the most expensive country in the world, it’s important to scrimp like hell. With alcohol being around 2-3 times the price of what I’m used to, I’m practically straight edge here in Norway. Great for the liver. I’d recommend an extended trip up here for any burgeoning alcoholic. Plus in the summer it only gets darkish around midnight
and light again around 2-3am so it gives you a lot of time to be outside doing stuff that isn’t drinking. Skal!
