Winners of the 2010 Sub Pop LoserScholarship!

7152

Back at the beginning of April we announced the 2010 Sub Pop Loser Scholarship and between then and the May 15th deadline, we received essays, artwork, music, video, etc. from tons of very qualified, inspiring applicants. We’ve been doing this every year since 2007, and each year it’s a genuine privilege to see the arts-related stuff high school seniors here in the NW are involved in. You’re a smart, varied, creative bunch! Here are the three we chose to give money to this year…

The first place, $6,000 scholarship went to Bryn Kepler from Bainbridge Island, WA. She’s been incredibly active in the local arts/music community, volunteering or working for One Reel, The Vera Project, Girls Rock!, the Hugo House Zine Archive, and even the Sub Pop 20th Anniversary Festival back in the summer of 2008. She’s also a drummer and an artist. Bryn will be attending the UW Honors Program in the fall to study architecture.

The $4,000 second place scholarship went to Ballard’s Matthew Law-Phipps. Matthew will be attending Temple University in Philadelphia in the fall to study video production, multi-media arts and sound design. He submitted some incredibly funny short video clips and has been studying Japanese for 8 years and intends to study abroad for one year.

Our third place, $3,000 scholarship winner is Raina Jung from Portland, OR. Raina will be going to the California College of the Arts this fall. She has attended Burning Man every year since she was 6, because her family runs the post office! She is an environmentalist and a great graphic artist. She is also a photographer and is interested in ceramics, bookbinding and printmaking. Her senior project was creating a 45-page magazine called “Make Bad Good” which was intended to tell people about how they can make positive changes for our environment.

Congratulations, you three! And, thanks to all of this year’s applicants! You’re all losers in our eyes.
