Salutations, new buddies! It’s me, Joan Hiller. We’ve already been introduced, via interview in Zach’s farewell edition of “Thanks for Playing,” (keep an eye out for Zach at “happenings” the world over – may his unicorn never grow weary and his many-sided die always stay true…). I’ll spare you any further small talk and get to the hot, wet details.
1. MASS EXODUS TO SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST!
Austin’s massive SXSW rock tractor beam hath passed over Seattle—and lots of your favorite Sub Pop bands have been drawn Southwest-ward like moths to flame, Look, a flyer with all of the relevant details!
…But wait! As there so frequently is, there is yet still more! David Cross is DJ’ing at THE FADER MAGAZINE/LEVI’S PARTY at 708 E. 6th Street at 2pm on Saturday, March 20th, hosting the Punk Rock Voter thing, and he’s appearing at the SPIN MAGAZINE PARTY (you’ll have to find the when-where-etc. details on these last two events yourself, we have no info to share). So. Much. Sub. Pop. Our bands can’t wait to see you there.
P.S…..Members of our staff in attendance will be eating pizza from that heavy metal pizza place on 6th, and if they’re smart, they’ll have breakfast taquitos from Tamale House #3. It’s the best one. I know ‘cause I’m Texan.
2. IRON AND WINE “DROPS SCIENCE ON US” THIS MONTH—AND SAM BEAM’S A PAINTER!
I can’t listen to “Naked as We Came”, the second jam on Our Endless Numbered Days, without crying like a giant crying thing; it’s the most touching brother/sister collaboration since The Carpenters’ “Only Yesterday”—but it’s way better than that. Sam Beam, who hand-painted the cover (and his tour posters, multi-talented arteeste, that he is), will be in a city near you soon. Please check our TOURS section and this month’s ROLLING STONE for details. Also, this may be useful: www.ironandwine.com
3. THE HELIO SEQUENCE IS TOURING WITH MODEST MOUSE, AND THE ALBUM LEAF IS HITTING JAPAN!
We hear that The Album Leaf uses projection art, and that The Helio Sequence uses magic. I use Jedi mind tricks, but my band still sucks—what gives? Sorry, I digress. Seriously, folks, keep ‘em peeled for new releases from both bands this summer, and buy them all Slurpees when they come through your hometown 7-Eleven.
4. WE ARE GOING TO PUT OUT RECORDS BY JENNIFER GENTLE!
Jennifer Gentle is a psych-pop band from Italy and we are ridiculously excited about working with them. Here’s what the Perfect Sound Forever online music magazine had to say about them: “I can hear bits and pieces of the music I love: Amon Duul, Godz, Os Mutantes, Residents, Sun City Girls, Love, Bongwater, Morricone, Can, Van Dyke Parks and more. But it’s Jennifer Gentle’s ability to transcend the limitations of their inspirations that makes them so special. JG create their own blueprint that in turn is truly inspiring in its own right. Their sound is alien and unique.” See? You should be excited too!
5. ALL NIGHT RADIO ADDED A BASS PLAYER TO THEIR TOUR!
That’s right! Mr.Tim Koh’s been called upon to add extra bomp to ANR’s nutso, psych-rock, live trip, four-string style! The ANR dudes just got back from Noise Pop, and are currently touring in support of Spirit Stereo Frequency. MOJO says, “Old skool wizardry abounds,” and The Onion says that “Scher and Hey’s “open to the atmosphere” intuition acquires the depth and friction of prophecy.” ANR’s like Nostradamus meets Archimedes the Owl from Disney’s Sword in the Stone, but stoned (on life, love, etc.) and on roller skates.
6. BLAKE SENNETT OF THE ELECTED: ASS-KICKER
He’s got foot switches attached to lights, and he wears a gas mask. It’s a stage show nothing short of stunning. People are loving his Sub Pop debut, Me First, in a way that probably freaks people out about the sanctity of heterosexual marriage. Alternative Press says that “It’s a thing of subversive beauty, a striking debut that’s self-assured and captivating.” So, take that!
7. ROSIE THOMAS’ SINGLE, “I PLAY MUSIC,” WAS ADDED TO HEAVY ROTATION ON BBC LONDON RADIO!!!
And she’s touring the U.S. and Europe this spring! ‘Nuff said.
8. THE SHINS ARE SO FAMOUS THAT THEY’RE IN THE BRITISH TABLOIDS!
The Sun, the UK’s National Inquirer-with-boobs, recently covered everyone’s favorite band from Albuquerque (not counting Felonious Groove Foundation, naturally). These same Shins are touring all over Europe right now, and they’re even playing ALL TOMORROW’S PARTIES!
9. WE FOUND SOME SINGLES CLUB SINGLES IN OUR WAREHOUSE AND WOULD LIKE VERY MUCH TO TRADE THEM TO YOU FOR YOUR MONEY!
No joke! Look at our store on s>p.com and in our news section for details. And no, there are no more White Stripes singles—not for you, not for anyone. If you ask us again, we will… Just please stop asking. Please?
10. YOU WILL LOVE WOLF EYES’ LIMITED EDITION SCREEN-PRINTED 12” SINGLE, AND YOU WILL ALSO LOVE THE SHINS’ NEW LIMITED EDITION PICTURE DISC!
Friends, if you haven’t already, it is high time that you finally joined the elite ranks of record collector scum. And we have your ticket(s) in! Wolf Eyes’ “Stabbed in the Face” b/w “Rat Floods” & “Stabbed (Instrumental)” 12” is gonna be viciously gorgeous; look for it this April, and be the first kid on your block to smell the vinyl. And The Shins’ picture 7” HAS PENGUINS ON IT, AS WELL AS AN EXCLUSIVE B-SIDE. Did you know that the male emperor penguin incubates the female penguin’s egg by sitting on it for months—and he starves himself at the same time???
11. KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED FOR OUR NEW RELEASES!
Upcoming this year, we’ve got new records from: David Cross (who just sold out the University of Washington’s giant HUB Ballroom and was, as per his contractual obligations, very funny, incisive and clean-smelling), The Catheters, The Thermals, The Helio Sequence, The Album Leaf, Rogue Wave, Wolf Eyes, Frausdots, the US reissue of the Constantines’ first album, Baptist Generals, Arlo… Check our site for details as soon as we have them. You love our site. You love Sub Pop. I love you.
