Ben Sollee & Daniel Martin Moore are fighting Mountaintop Removal, a radical form or strip mining that has destroyed nearly one million acres of central Appalachia, join their fight by purchasing their new record, Dear Companion. Dear Companion is a collaboration between three Kentucky musicians; the songs were written and performed by Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore, produced by and featuring Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket and Monsters of Folk. Recorded in the first half of 2009 in their home state, Dear Companion explores their ties to the place they love and aims to draw attention to the problem of Mountaintop Removal coal mining (MTR) and its impact on the people and heritage of central Appalachia. On October 6th, we at Sub Pop will once again celebrate the lonely art of stand-up comedy with the release of Eugene Mirman’s new album God Is a Twelve-Year-Old Boy with Asperger’s. This will mark only the 5th comedy record we’ve released in our entire history. With our catalog numbers soaring impressively skyward, numbering in the 800s now, that’s a fact worth noting. 5 out of 800+? That means just about one half of one percent of our releases are from stand-up comedians. What I’m driving at here, people, is that we’re really choosey about our comedy. God Is a Twelve-Year-Old Boy with Asperger’s is Eugene Mirman’s second record on Sub Pop and we couldn’t be more proud. As you, discerning, attentive music fan, have undoubtedly noticed, we’ve recently been giving ourselves some well-deserved, showy pats on the back by reissuing some stand-outs from the Sub Pop catalog. This is what I’m trying to show you about: Red Red Meat’s Bunny Gets Paid, The Vaselines’ Enter The Vaselines, and the all deluxed-up Superfuzz Bigmuff. We’ve decided to carpe some diem and reissue a few more of our past favorites. Just yesterday, we released remastered versions Sunny Day Real Estate’s Diary and LP2 on colored vinyl (digital download code included) and CD, both of which feature bonus tracks. And, on September 22nd we’re putting out remastered versions of Mudhoney’s Superfuzz Bigmuff, Mudhoney, and Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge, all on very colorful, very collectible colored vinyl (also with digital download codes). What is perhaps less evident from the title is that it also contains 6 more songs that have been, up to now, only available as a CDR that Blitzen Trapper has been selling at their live performances for the past year or so.

Sometimes we just ask really nicely, but often we use little sales tricks to assist in turning your money into our money. This time we’re using a huge sales trick: we’re giving away a nicely packaged CDR of the entire Pissed Jeans set at the Sub Pop 20th Anniversary Festival from last July. You’ve never heard of Daniel Martin Moore, from Cold Spring, Kentucky and that’s okay. Before we got his unsolicited demo in January 2007, neither had we. Luckily, he’d heard of us, and contacted us the way people in Cold Spring still do—he sent us a package, just to see what would happen. We caught up with Daniel while he was working at a friend’s bed and breakfast in Costa Rica. Recorded in Los Angeles in late 2007/early 2008, Stray Age is his stunning, understated debut.

Kelley Stoltz (totally) Does it Again!

It must be a gift from Zeus, or Jesus or whomever to have jobs where we almost never have to feign enthusiasm about the music we’re putting out. On February 5th, we’re releasing Kelley Stoltz’s
new album Circular Sounds. And it would be pretty nauseating if we were any more excited about it. It’s that good. But, don’t just take my word for it: buy it! From the here’s-me-trying-to-persuade-you dept.: We’ll toss in a couple of stickers and a button if you do! Because that’s just how we do.

A little more about Circular Sounds:
Circular Sounds is the fourth LP from San Francisco’s home recording auteur Kelley Stoltz
. Its 14 songs are a stereophonic advance on the lo-fidelity psych-fuzz of Antique Glow (Beautiful Happiness, 2004) and the mid-fi piano-rock of Below the Branches (Sub Pop, 2006): two modest masterpieces which, by a curious coincidence, both made #24 in MOJO magazine’s “Best Albums” list for their respective years. Kelley has also been praised by such esteemed publications as Uncut, Rolling Stone, Q, The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, Time Out London, The Independent, and Ptolemaic Terrascope.

Circular Sounds is very much a pop record, in the classic ’60s mold. The horn-and-harmony-soaked romance suggesting Love covering “Good Day Sunshine” of “Everything Begins,” and the glorious, garage-psych dilation of “Your Reverie” are amongst the album’s 14 highlights. And these tracks boast Kelley’s fullest production to date: radio-ready yet retaining the organic warmth that gave his earlier work its character. He is no longer a marginal, ‘lo-fi’ artist: “I work in a second-hand record store and that’s made me more of a hi-fi advocate. It’s hard for me to listen to stuff that was recorded on a cassette player nowadays. By the last record I was mid-fi. I think I’m mid-hi now!”

In the new, Spring 2007 issue of Magnet Magazine, there is, fittingly enough (it’s their 75th issue), an article entitled “75 Lost Classics.” The fine folks at Magnet describe it like so!

They’re nobody’s buzz bands anymore. But since 1993, MAGNET has discovered and documented more great music than memory will allow. The groups may be broken up or the albums out of print, but this time, history is written by the losers. Here are 75 of the finest albums that time forgot.

And on this coupon will be instructions, a url and a unique code for you to download the mp3s for the album you’ve purchased.
Pretty simple.

Please note that these coupons, and their associated access to free mp3s, will not magically (or otherwise) appear in albums released before January of 2007.
