If you pre-order I Will Be by March 30th, you’ll receive a reissued CDR of her out-of-print Zoo Music EP, featuring 5 early Dum Dum Girls tracks. You’ll also get Dum Dum Girls stickers and probably some other stickers too. OH! I almost forgot—if you pre-order the record right this moment, you can also listen to it—RIGHT THIS MOMENT—via a link to a full album stream. So those three reasons, plus the 11 amazing reasons on the record (the songs, duh) equals 14 reasons to go make a yes decision to the as-yet-unspoken question which is really the whole point of this email: “Do you want to pre-order I Will Be right now?” We’d really like to think you do.

Turn this opportunity yes.

Pre-order I Will Be right here.

Download the “Jail La La” MP3 for free here.

March 16th is going to be a sweet day for people who love sweet tunes. What I’m talking about is, a band called Happy Birthday and their debut CD/LP (with accompanying digital download code) on Sub Pop Records. Not only will you receive a CD or LP with 11 astounding gems with your pre-order, you’ll also get the record for the special pre-order price of $10 for the CD and $14 for the LP. And you know what? That’s not it! We’re also going to throw in a pretty sweet Happy Birthday sticker sheet and poster. And the last thing I want to mention regarding this (and all Sub Pop pre-orders, for that matter), is that when you pre-order Happy Birthday, you’ll get instant access to a stream so you don’t have to wait to hear the record.

Pre-order Happy Birthday and get a free MP3 download from the record right here.

New Sub Pop Hoodies

Are you like me? Would you like to shield yourself from the cold and at the same time display your affection for this very record label? Well, we here at this very record label have come up with a solution to this problem. We have found that by creating hooded-style sweatshirts made from the luxurious, American Apparel, poly/cotton blend that proudly fly the Sub Pop logo on the chest, we could be both warm, and representin’ at the same time. And at $38, they are $4 less than what the plain sweatshirt retails for(meaning that the Sub Pop logo only does $4 worth of damage when printed on the shirt).

They are available right here.

Ben Sollee & Daniel Martin Moore are fighting Mountaintop Removal, a radical form or strip mining that has destroyed nearly one million acres of central Appalachia, join their fight by purchasing their new record, Dear Companion. Dear Companion is a collaboration between three Kentucky musicians; the songs were written and performed by Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore, produced by and featuring Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket and Monsters of Folk. Recorded in the first half of 2009 in their home state, Dear Companion explores their ties to the place they love and aims to draw attention to the problem of Mountaintop Removal coal mining (MTR) and its impact on the people and heritage of central Appalachia. All record royaltie from Dear Companion will benefit Appalachian Voices, an organization devoted to ending MTR and finding a better way forward. And if you pre-order the record by February 16th, you’ll receive it for just $10—you’ll also instantly have access to a stream of the entire record, so you won’t have to wait to listen.

We here at Sub Pop Records will let many Tuesdays go by without even hinting at a release—no singles, no digital-only EPs, no nothing. Not this coming Tuesday, however. No, we are carpe-ing some serious diem on January 26th. We’re putting out 3 Sub Pop debut full-lengths from Beach House, AFCGT (A Frames & Climax Golden Twins), and Retribution Gospel Choir. The Beach House CD/2xLP comes with a DVD featuring a video for each song on the album, and if you pre-order, you’ll receive an amazing little scrapbook we compiled from Victoria’s lyric book from writing Teen Dream. That’s limited to the first 500 pre-orderers, BTW. Retribution Gospel Choir and AFCGT are both pleasantly discounted by $2, which is a lot ITTET. The AFCGT s/t record is LP only—on white vinyl, with a bonus seven inch, and a digital download code (all the LPs have a digital download code). If you pre-order any (or all) of these very necessary records, you’ll have access to a stream so you can listen to them before they arrive in your mailbox.

Beach House’s Teen Dream here

Where Were You When Bleach Was Reissued?

That was just yesterday, so I hope you remember. Yesterday was officially the cutoff for getting two bucks off the CD/LP. But you can still get Nirvana’s debut, Bleach, on 180 gram, white-vinyl, with digital download code. Or if you prefer, compact disc (both versions come with an amazing live recording from 1990). Nothing marks the day where you were all like, “I can’t believe it’s been 20 years already”, better than a reissue. Pick yours up here.

New Eugene Mirman CD 10/6! Free Eugene Tote-Bag w/ pre-order!

On October 6th, we at Sub Pop will once again celebrate the lonely art of stand-up comedy with the release of Eugene Mirman’s new album God Is a Twelve-Year-Old Boy with Asperger’s. This will mark only the 5th comedy record we’ve released in our entire history. With our catalog numbers soaring impressively skyward, numbering in the 800s now, that’s a fact worth noting. 5 out of 800+? That means just about one half of one percent of our releases are from stand-up comedians. What I’m driving at here, people, is that we’re really choosey about our comedy. God Is a Twelve-Year-Old Boy with Asperger’s is Eugene Mirman’s second record on Sub Pop and we couldn’t be more proud. We’re so proud in fact, that if you pre-order God Is a Twelve-Year-Old Boy with Asperger’s by October 6th, we’ll throw in a Eugene Mirman tote-bag (while supplies last, of course) and some Eugene-related buttons and stickers.

Pre-order God Is a Twelve-Year-Old Boy with Asperger’s here

A Bit about the Mudhoney & SDRE Reissues

As you, discerning, attentive music fan, have undoubtedly noticed, we’ve recently been giving ourselves some well-deserved, showy pats on the back by reissuing some stand-outs from the Sub Pop catalog. This is what I’m trying to show you about: Red Red Meat’s Bunny Gets Paid, The Vaselines’ Enter The Vaselines, and the all deluxed-up Superfuzz Bigmuff. We’ve decided to carpe some diem and reissue a few more of our past favorites. Just yesterday, we released remastered versions Sunny Day Real Estate’s Diary and LP2 on colored vinyl (digital download code included) and CD, both of which feature bonus tracks. And, on September 22nd we’re putting out remastered versions of Mudhoney’s Superfuzz Bigmuff, Mudhoney, and Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge, all on very colorful, very collectible colored vinyl (also with digital download codes). So carpe these records and we’ll carpe your money. Cool?

Pick up the Mudhoney reissues here.

New Blitzen Trapper EP on Tuesday!

As its title would lead one to believe, the Black River Killer EP contains the disturbing and great song “Black River Killer” from Blitzen Trapper’s excellent Sept. ‘08 full-length album Furr (check the video here, it’s really great). What is perhaps less evident from the title is that it also contains 6 more songs that have been, up to now, only available as a CDR that Blitzen Trapper has been selling at their live performances for the past year or so.

Pick it up right here.

Thank you.

Live CD with Pissed Jeans Pre-order through Aug. 18!

Here we go again! The second, enchanting Pissed Jeans record on Sub Pop, King of Jeans, comes out August 18th and will be available on CD, LP (first pressing on creamed-color vinyl, complete with a digital download code), and the invisible formatway known as the MP3. Sometimes we just ask really nicely, but often we use little sales tricks to assist in turning your money into our money. This time we’re using a huge sales trick: we’re giving away a nicely packaged CDR of the entire Pissed Jeans set at the Sub Pop 20th Anniversary Festival from last July. Please pardon my lack of exclamation marks (I’m trying to cut back), but this is a huge deal. We haven’t shared this with anyone yet and don’t have immediate plans to. Which means that the only way to get your hands on a copy is to pre-order King of Jeans through August 18th. It’s that or the internet. But (unlike the internet) we’ll also be giving you Pissed Jeans stickers and buttons. Oh, and also also: with your pre-order, you get an all-access pass (in the form of a link) to a stream of King of Jeans to tide you over until release date.

Pre-order King of Jeans here.

Pre-order the brand new Pissed Jeans shirt here (these also drop on August 18th):

$2 Off New Fruit Bats CD/LP With Pre-Order

It’s been a few years since the Fruit Bats put out a record, 4 to be exact. But Fruit Bats leader Eric D. Johnson hasn’t been sitting idly by; he’s spent his time playing with label mates The Shins and Vetiver, honing his skills and biding his time for his attack. Well, maybe not an attack so much as another really, really good record. On August 4th, The Ruminant Band is available on CD, LP (comes with digital download code and is gatefold, BTW), and of course, digital. If you pre-order through August 4th, you’ll automatically receive $2 off our already well-priced price. That’s makes it just $10 for the CD and $12 for the LP – around the office, we call that sort of thing a no-brainer. We’re also into giving away stickers and buttons and whatever else we can find to spruce up your order, so expect that sort of thing too.

After a couple months of reissues and ultra-deluxely packaged b-side comps (see: Iron & Wine and The Vaselines), Tiny Vipers brings us our first new full-length release of the summer. Life on Earth, Tiny Vipers’ second album is available on CD and MP3 July 7th, and as per usual, we’re going to sweeten the metaphorical pot with some proverbial sugar. If you pre-order Life on Earth from us at subpop.com anytime before July 7th, you’ll also receive a truly limited Tiny Vipers home-recorded ambient piece on CDR called Blades of Grass. This Blades of Grass CDR is only available only to online pre-orderers only! So become one of those pre-orderers! By pre-orderering! To show you we aren’t fooling around with this incentivizing business, we’ll also throw in a button and a couple stickers.

Pre-order Life on Earth

Vaselines CD/LP out May 5th!

First and foremost, if you don’t already own The Way of The Vaselines, your record collection should most certainly be considered incomplete. As proof, consider the fact that Kurt Cobain (he was in Nirvana!) called The Vaselines “(his) favorite songwriters in the world.” Second and secondmost, if you do already own The Way of The Vaselines, please congratulate yourself on your unassailable good taste! Unfortunately, we’re about to make that collection obsolete with this new, much more complete Vaselines compilation, Enter The Vaselines. Sorry! But, finally and finalmost, if you pre-order the double-CD or triple-LP (complete with digital download code) by May 5th, you’ll automatically receive $2 off (so, $13 for the CDs and $19 for the LPs) plus altogether F-R-E-E Vaselines-related stickers and a button! And, arguably more importantly, you’ll have earned an enhanced feeling of smugness about your record collection. We will, of course, have earned your money. And that’s thanks enough for us.

Order Enter The Vaselines here

We’re gonna try something crazy here (but it’s not the first time, so we know it’ll work out in our favor). We’re going to put out two records in one day! First, we have I Blame You, the debut from Obits (CD/LP). Pre-ordering this will get you a very amazing, band-designed lenticular post-card and stickers and button. Also on March 24th, Bunny Gets Paid, Red Red Meat’s third album is getting the deluxe, double-disc reissue treatment. The only other Sub Pop release to get this honor so far has been Mudhoney’s Superfuzz Bigmuff, so Bunny Gets Paid is among good company.

Tuesday, March 10th marks our second release of 2009. This brings you, esteemed email subscriber person, yet another opportunity to own bonus material through an altogether unsubtle sales trick we call “the pre-order incentive”. When (and less likely if) you pre-order Handsome Furs’ second album, FACE CONTROL, on CD or LP (as usual, the vinyl comes with a digital download code), you will receive a limited CDR featuring four album tracks performed live at an April, 2008 show in Seattle. And because we’re so sweet on you (and your money), we’re going to throw in a couple stickers and a button as well. Can’t wait until March 10thto hear FACE CONTROL? With your pre-order, you’ll have access to a full album stream! How’s that for a bullet-proof sales pitch?

Pre-order FACE CONTROL here.

While it’s true, you could wait until Tight Knit, the spectacular new album from Vetiver finds its way into your local record or appliance store, you should probably take advantage of the fact that we are giving away a free 7” single with pre-orders of the album through subpop.com. This is a “while supplies last” type deal, meaning that we will give away these singles until they are gone and then that’s it. Do this today, in other words. Vetiver’s Sub Pop debut will be released on February 17th on CD and LP (LP comes with a free digital download code, btw), either of which will arrive with the “Hey Baby Doll” 7”. And if, as I do, you like to be even further rewarded with free things for making intelligent purchases, you will be enthused to learn that we’ve got Vetiver-related stickers and a button for you as well. PLUS! Every pre-order will get access to a full album stream on our site all the way up until release date. So you don’t have to wait to hear the record!

This is the one and only Green River t-shirt (that we’re aware of, at least) and it has been reissued on high-quality, 180-gram, American Apparel cotton (the gram thing isn’t true, but it helps an otherwise needy metaphor). The front of the shirt features the band and the back boasts a six-pack paired with the term, “Ride the Fucking Six-Pack”. So if you’re wearing it to school, you may need to turn it inside-out when you get off the bus.

Pick it up here

(Stream Stray Age in full here!)

On October 7th, Stray Age, the debut recording from Daniel Martin Moore will be available to you on CD and as modern, downloadable MP3s. You’ve never heard of Daniel Martin Moore, from Cold Spring, Kentucky and that’s okay. Before we got his unsolicited demo in January 2007, neither had we. Luckily, he’d heard of us, and contacted us the way people in Cold Spring still do—he sent us a package, just to see what would happen. We caught up with Daniel while he was working at a friend’s bed and breakfast in Costa Rica. Recorded in Los Angeles in late 2007/early 2008, Stray Age is his stunning, understated debut.

If you pre-order Stray Age by October 7th, we’ll throw in, at no charge to you, a limited CDR featuring four demos, three of which are exclusive to this release. And, as-per-usual, you can expect some stickers and a button or two.

Blitzen Trapper Give us Furr on Sept. 23rd

On September 23rd, the Sub Pop Recording Company of Seattle, Wash., will proudly and, with any luck, quite conspicuously release the new album by Blitzen Trapper! This new Blitzen Trapper album is entitled Furr and will be available as: a big, round, black vinyl LP (complete with a free digital download code of the entire album), a much shinier, more silvery and smaller Compact Disc, or in the popular, though largely invisible MP3 format–all manufactured with the utmost care and attention to detale. And, as an authorized representative of the Sub Pop Recording Company and not very well supervised writer of this email, I am prepared to offer you FREE THINGS, when you pre-order Furr! FREE THINGS like: A Blitzen Trapper iron-on patch! An MP3 download of the otherwise unavailable, remarkably great Blitzen Trapper song from the Furr sessions “Rent-a-Cop”! Blitzen Trapper stickers! Also maybe a button!

Surely, you should pre-order Furr right here.

The Sub Pop 20th Anniversary Festival was a bliss filled weekend, so bliss filled in fact, that there is no way we would remember who played if it weren’t for our Official Sub Pop 20th Anniversary Festival T-shirts sporting the extensive line-up on the back. If you were at the festival and didn’t get a chance to pick one up then, here’s your chance. If you weren’t at the festival, here’s your chance to lie and have irrefutable evidence that you were there. Simply cut and paste a photo of your face with the included picture of the neo-grunge kids and show it to folks while wearing the shirt. Tell everyone that Green River ruled. People will be very impressed; people are easily impressed.

On August 5th, Brooklyn’s Oxford Collapse are giving the world BITS, their latest record, and here at Sub Pop, we couldn’t be more motivated to sell you this record! Don’t believe us? How about this: if you pre-order BITS by August 5th, we will throw in, at no extra charge, a very special, very limited photograph taken by Oxford Collapse while on tour. We say very limited because we had doubles printed so the band could have a copy too; so each photograph is limited to two. We only have 100 different photographs to give away, so act quickly! Incentivizers that we are, you’ll also be receiving stickers and buttons crammed into your order! That’s just how we do.

Our otherwise mild-mannered Sub Pop offices were completely unable to contain our obscene levels of enthusiasm when these three brand new Flight of the Conchords t-shirts came in; and I’m only exaggerating a little bit! With these three remarkably designed t-shirts, you can be the envy of friends and strangers alike!

Though it may not officially be the start of summer, June 3rd offers the brand-new, self-titled full –length debut from Fleet Foxes. And Fleet Foxes sure sounds a lot like summer to us. In the completely unbiased and otherwise perfect perspective of your good and trustworthy friends here at Sub Pop Records, we can think of no better way to celebrate this change of season than through the purchase of this particular record album. That’s the real take-home here. And, if you pre-order Fleet Foxes on CD or LP you’ll automatically receive $2 off! That makes the CD $10 and the LP $12! The glorious gate-fold LP version, by the way, comes with a digital download code, and includes the Sun Giant EP on a second, enclosed piece of vinyl. And due to our penchant for pandering to potential record-purchasers, we’ll throw in some Fleet Foxes-related stickers and a button! Farewell fine fans of Fleet Foxes (it has been suggested, in some quarters or these very offices, that my fondness for alliteration approaches a fault or even failing…).

Pick up Fleet Foxes here

Sub Pop’s International Talent-Hound Dept. is almost constantly scouring the globe for the “hottest” and “freshest” new “artists.” On April 22nd, we’re releasing a new album from one such hot discovery: New Zealand’s totally bumpable, Flight of the Conchords. Their self-titled full-length will be available on both CD and, for you connoisseurs of the finer things in fidelity, vinyl LP (with an MP3 download code for the entire album). And for the wall-art lover in all of us: both versions come with an enclosed poster celebrating the album’s stunningly handsome artwork. Uh-huh, we know you like it like that. But, no way is that all. If you pre-order Flight of the Conchords by April 22nd, you’ll pay only $12 before shipping and very sensual handling (that’s 2 dollars less than our normal, post-April 22nd, still totally reasonable price of $14). What’s that? You’d like some more? Well, just like all of our online orders, you’ll also receive Flight of the Conchords-related buttons and stickers.

On March 18th, Sub Pop will be releasing Only as the Day Is Long, our first record with Sera Cahoone. Sera played in Carissa’s Wierd and played drums on the Band of Horses album Everything All the Time, and her self-titled, self-released debut record was one of our favorites of 2006. Not that we really need to sweeten this pot, but if you pre-order the new CD by March 18th, we’ll take 2 bucks off our already strikingly low price of $12, thereby only charging you, esteemed and intelligent consumer, a measly $10.
Brand New Ruby Suns Record on Tuesday

On March 4th, we’re releasing our first album with New Zealand’s The Ruby Suns. It’s called Sea Lion and is ten tracks of globe-trotting, Tropicalia-infused psychedelic pop, sprinkled with references to the Beach Boys, Eno and a ton of others. Like many of our favorite NZ exports, this record is a constantly unfolding wonder, inventive and wide-ranging. And, if you pre-order Sea Lion by March 4th, we’ll take $2 off the already low Sub Pop Megamart price of $12, making it $10 for you, you super intelligent consumer of Sub Pop wares whose ass we are forever trying to kiss. And just like all of our online orders, we will include stickers and possibly even a button; because we like getting you excited about buying things from us. Actually, we mostly just like the part where you buy things from us – but the excitement is nice, too.

Pre-order the new Gutter Twins and get 2 bucks off!

On March 4th, rejoice, for you can finally listen to the long-awaited debut from The Gutter Twins: Saturnalia! And, if you pre-order Saturnalia on CD or on glorious, incredibly expensive 180-gram, double LP by March 4th, you’ll get $2 off the regular Sub Pop Megamart price (that’s already $2 off the retail price – generosity is totally our thing). Also, being the deal-sweeteners that we are, we’re going to give the first 200 pre-orderers a CD booklet autographed by both Mark Lanegan and Greg Dulli. That’s a limited offer, folks – when they’re gone, that’s it. And as with all of our online orders, you’ll get Gutter Twins-related stickers and buttons. Generosity, that’s just how we don’t not do.

Orders have exceeded the amount of autographed CD booklets we have. If you’d like to try and get one of them still, try ordering through Newbury Comics here.

Again: the autographed CD booklets are now gone!

Attention! As we have mentioned from time to time here on the Sub Pop web thingy, most of the LPs that we put out come with an enclosed coupon enabling you to download all of the album’s songs as mp3s FOR FREE. The vinyl format for Saturnalia, for example, includes one of these very coupons.

February 19th is probably going to be a pretty crappy day weather-wise wherever you happen to be, and unless you’re excessively goth, you’re probably gonna be pretty bummed about it. We here at Sub Pop had the remarkable foresight to bring you a record scientifically-designed and precision-engineered to combat any symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) you might be feeling. Your February 19th is going to be a little brighter with the debut from Grand Archives. Or, you could just hide all the knives in your house and curl up into a ball until spring. We think The Grand Archives makes a lot more sense. And, if you pre-order The Grand Archives on CD or LP by release date, we’ll throw in a bonus seven-inch (because vinyl sounds a little warmer or whatever). And just like all of our online customers, you’ll also get a button and a couple stickers! Because that’s just how we do.

Pick it up here.

Kelley Stoltz (totally) Does it Again!

It must be a gift from Zeus, or Jesus or whomever to have jobs where we almost never have to feign enthusiasm about the music we’re putting out. On February 5th, we’re releasing Kelley Stoltz’s
new album Circular Sounds. And it would be pretty nauseating if we were any more excited about it. It’s that good. But, don’t just take my word for it: buy it! From the here’s-me-trying-to-persuade-you dept.: We’ll toss in a couple of stickers and a button if you do! Because that’s just how we do.

A little more about Circular Sounds:
Circular Sounds is the fourth LP from San Francisco’s home recording auteur Kelley Stoltz
. Its 14 songs are a stereophonic advance on the lo-fidelity psych-fuzz of Antique Glow (Beautiful Happiness, 2004) and the mid-fi piano-rock of Below the Branches (Sub Pop, 2006): two modest masterpieces which, by a curious coincidence, both made #24 in MOJO magazine’s “Best Albums” list for their respective years. Kelley has also been praised by such esteemed publications as Uncut, Rolling Stone, Q, The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, Time Out London, The Independent, and Ptolemaic Terrascope.

Circular Sounds is very much a pop record, in the classic ’60s mold. The horn-and-harmony-soaked romance suggesting Love covering “Good Day Sunshine” of “Everything Begins,” and the glorious, garage-psych dilation of “Your Reverie” are amongst the album’s 14 highlights. And these tracks boast Kelley’s fullest production to date: radio-ready yet retaining the organic warmth that gave his earlier work its character. He is no longer a marginal, ‘lo-fi’ artist: “I work in a second-hand record store and that’s made me more of a hi-fi advocate. It’s hard for me to listen to stuff that was recorded on a cassette player nowadays. By the last record I was mid-fi. I think I’m mid-hi now!”

We think you’re mid-hi too, Kelley. For realz.
Order here, folks.

It’s been nearly four years since we’ve heard from Brandon and Benjamin and we couldn’t possibly be more excited about what they’ve come up with! It’s scientifically unpossible! Keep Your Eyes Ahead is the band’s best release to date – the wait has been totally worth it. Know what else? If you pre-order Keep Your Eyes Ahead by January, 29th on CD or LP, we’re going to throw in a CDR containing b-sides and outtakes from the record that we’re not-so-creatively calling B-Sides and Outtakes. Plus, you fortunate pre-orderers will also receive the band-related stickers and buttons that we’re forever patting ourselves on the back for including in our on-line orders. It’s an embarrassment of riches, we know.

Pick it up right here.

Sub Pop, Black Friday, and You!

Every Thanksgiving we, as Americans, stuff ourselves with a completely disgusting quantity of food. It’s one of the many rights given to us by the great, powerful and angry God above and/or the utter caprice of our birthplace. And after that, we sleep for 18 hours. We don’t actually know how this tradition started, but we’re pretty sure it was how the pilgrims built up their strength in order to endure the following day – Black Friday, the most shoppingest day of the year. Why, you didn’t ask, but we’re going to assume you did? Because the pilgrims knew that the holidays are all about buying stuff!!! And today that’s more truer than ever. Just ask your girlfriend, your kids, your mom, or whoever you picked for Secret Santa – they all totally want stuff from you. We at Sub Pop are here to make the otherwise tedious process of providing this stuff as painless as possible with our invention of ONLINE SHOPPING. Here’s what you do: Peruse our online store, or “Megamart,” select as many items as you like for all of your gift-giving needs and place them into your “shopping cart” (this is a virtual shopping cart, by the way, there is no actual, physical cart involved). We will then happily accept your money and send you some junk in the mail. Black Friday, Sub Pop and you: together we can help you send us your money.

For example, this limited-edition, autographed set of prints featuring artwork by Sam Beam is the perfect gift for any fan of Iron & Wine, or really anyone with discerning taste. Or maybe your loved one would love one of our proven cold-weather-fighting, zip-up, hooded sweatshirts bearing the Sub Pop imprimatur of moderate quality? Or just browse through our arguably vast catalog of CDs, LPs and t-shirts. And then buy some of that crap! Anyway you look at it, as a holiday gift-giver, you can’t lose!

Back to School—a greedy retailers three favorite words, and we here at Sub Pop are no different. Thankfully, we’re very proud of the merchandise that we’re peddling, so that makes us feel a lot better about the aforementioned greediness. So yeah, Back to School! With a little help from our hoodies, pullover or zip-up, you dudes are gonna look super rad for your school picture, or for that strapping young English teacher who also happens to be into the Shins. We also have brand new t-shirts available from Tiny Vipers and Handsome Furs as well as designs from many of your favorite older and less new Sub Pop bands. And hey, don’t stop there—we’ve also got a bunch of new posters available so you and your dorm room will be ready for class, in class! Know what I’m sayin’?

PITCHFORK Roundup! (Or how to use your coupon on our site)

We just flew back from the Pitchfork Music Fest in Chicago and boy are our arms tired! Alissa, Sam, and I spent three days in the Chicago heat to bring you all the best in/some of Sub Pop’s wares and we’d like to extend a hearty THANK YOU! to all that came by the booth to chat and, more importantly, buy some stuff from us. We’ve recently added the limited edition t-shirts we had for sale (Note: we will NOT be making more of these so get yours now!) as well as the killer vinyl sized tote bags that were seen hanging from the arms of kids in the know all over Union Park last weekend.

You may have been smart enough to pick up a Sub Pop sticker with a coupon for $5 off orders of $20 or more, but chances are that the directions are a tad confusing so let me explain how you’ll get your deal. Because we don’t have our coupon code area all set up on our new site we will be manually refunding your card the $5 when we see the secret code written in the comments section of your order. This may take an extra day or so, but be assured that your refund will show up! We apologize for any inconvenience but later’s better than never, especially when it comes to money.

Again, nice to see you all, and thanks for stopping by!

Got a question? Email websales@subpop.com

Oh, and yes, that’s a green Sub Pop pin in that guy’s chest.

I’ve been scratching my head for weeks now trying to figure out the next feature for the Sub Pop Online Shop and then just yesterday it dawned on me — why not ask Andy K, Head of Sales and Other Stuff, to name his TOP 5 RECORDS in the Sub Pop Shop?
Magnet Magazine's "75 Lost Classics": We Found Eight of Them

In the new, Spring 2007 issue of Magnet Magazine, there is, fittingly enough (it’s their 75th issue), an article entitled “75 Lost Classics.” The fine folks at Magnet describe it like so!

They’re nobody’s buzz bands anymore. But since 1993, MAGNET has discovered and documented more great music than memory will allow. The groups may be broken up or the albums out of print, but this time, history is written by the losers. Here are 75 of the finest albums that time forgot.

Good news, gang! We found eight of them! (Nine, if you count the indie-pop/twee sidebar that featured a picture of Trembling Blue Stars and talked about their Broken by Whispers album from 2000, but actually picked The Lucksmiths’ album The Green Bicycle Case…)

And, in even better news, we would like to sell these Lost Classics to you!

Still in print:

Pond Pond (1993) – on CD for $9 and LP for $7.
Velocity Girl Copacetic (1993) on CD for $9 and LP for $7.
godheadSilo Skyward in Triumph (1995) – on CD for $9 and LP for $7.
The Spinanes Strand (1996) – on CD for $9 and LP for $7
The Go Whatcha Doin’ (1999) on CD for $10.
Beachwood Sparks Once We Were Trees (2001) on CD for $10 and double-LP for $11.

Out of print, but you can still buy ’em on the iTunes:

Seaweed Four (1993)
Zumpano Look What the Rookie Did

Here’s the deal:

Starting with our first release in 2007 (the new Shins record) and continuing on until such time as we lose interest or forget, if/when you buy a Sub Pop release in the vinyl format, you will find a coupon enclosed. And on this coupon will be instructions, a url and a unique code for you to download the mp3s for the album you’ve purchased.
Pretty simple.

Please note that these coupons, and their associated access to free mp3s, will not magically (or otherwise) appear in albums released before January of 2007.

There is some more info on all this business here.
