David Cross / Bigger and Blackerer (DVD) - SP883
The new David Cross album and DVD Bigger and Blackerer was taped during two shows, back-to-back on the same evening at Boston’s Wilbur Theatre. As will be obvious by the packaging (and maybe some of the words here), this title applies to both a CD and a DVD; separate releases in separate formats with the same name. Though both media are housed on a shiny, silver five-inch disc, each is an entity unto itself. And while there is some overlap, each is full of material that appears solely on one or the other. Only by watching the DVD will you learn of Cross’ unique relationship with the deaf community, share his canny insights into the editorial machinations behind the Bible, and marvel at how well a bald, middle-aged white guy can fill out a pair of jeans. Yet one must listen to the CD in order to hear about gastro-intestinal misadventures with his dog Ollie Red Sox, or sing along with “The Sultan’s Revenge,” the swinging, Vegas-style opening number composed by Cross and his good friend Mark Rivers (author of the theme to Mr. Show).
During his illustrious career, David Cross has played recurring roles on the TV programs Arrested Development and The Colbert Report, and won an Emmy Award for his contributions to The Ben Stiller Show. He has also starred in such films as Waiting for Guffman, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, the Bob Dylan fantasy I’m Not There (in which he portrayed Allen Ginsberg), and Kung Fu Panda. Bigger and Blackerer is both David Cross’ third album and second DVD on Sub Pop Records, preceded by the albums It’s Not Funny (2004) and Shut Up, You Fucking Baby! (2002), and the 2003 DVD tour documentary Let America Laugh. He is currently living in exile in the UK, working on the show The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret (to be broadcast on IFC in the USA this fall).

We’re also offering a discounted combo-pack of both the Bigger and Blackerer CD AND DVD right here!

Flight of the Conchords / I Told You I Was Freaky - SP800
There is so much that could be said regarding Flight of the Conchords. How they hail from New Zealand, the island nation with multiple postal services. Or that, after winning a Best Comedy Album Grammy for The Distant Future in 2007, they were nominated for a second Best Comedy Album Grammy in 2008, but were actually relieved not to win again—-because meaningless trophies really do seem important when you only have one, and have to fight over who gets to keep it. And that during the recently-completed second season of their popular HBO television series, fans could download new songs immediately after they debuted on-air. Or that this same popular HBO television series (conveniently also called Flight of the Conchords) was recently nominated for what-sure-seems-like-a-record-breaking 6 Emmys.
But all that is mere background, fact-based information that, while, granted, is largely true, impressive, and odd, doesn’t really allow us to serve up the steaming plate of rich, delicious and hopefully irresistibly persuasive description for which we (or our hired writers) are somewhat known in certain circles. And so: While Flight of the Conchords hammered out their reputation from behind the relative safety of acoustic guitars, blithely billed as a “folk comedy” act, nowadays their musical style runs rampant, unchecked. Judging from the range displayed here on I Told You I Was Freaky, Flight of the Conchords have yet to unearth a genre which can withstand their artistry. Unflinching in their lyrical stance, sophisticated with their arrangements, crafting melodies which always lodge firmly in the frontal lobe: Flight of the Conchords have created 13 best-selling ringtones, humbly masquerading as songs. Their rhymes are fearless, their thesauruses dog-eared. Only cool, confident specimens of manhood such as these could drop three-dollar vocabulary busters like “dungarees” and “pantaloons” while still mesmerizing the ladies with their undulating “Sugalumps.” Vivid imagery? Check: The ardent “Angels” should spur listeners to think twice the next time they consider catching a snowflake on their tongues. Better still, the amorous odyssey of the album’s zenith, “We’re Both in Love with a Sexy Lady,” unfolds before the listener’s very ears in real time; Flight of the Conchords are making history, and You! Are! There!
I Told You I Was Freaky is, among a great many other things, a genre-tripping tour de force and includes three songs from the second series of the show which are otherwise as yet unreleased (“Rambling Through the Avenues of Time,” “Too Many Dicks (On the Dance Floor)” and “You Don’t Have to Be a Prostitute”).
Released: October 20, 2009
Eugene Mirman / God Is a Twelve-Year-Old Boy with Asperger's - SP806
Brooklyn resident, comedian and really great guy (and Russian immigrant) Eugene Mirman has, among a great many other things, released two previous albums: Suicide Squeeze Records’ The Absurd Nightclub Comedy of Eugene Mirman (voted best of 2004 by Time Out New York and The Onion) and the 2006 genre-bending (not really) follow-up En Garde, Society! on Sub Pop Records (which Eugene thinks reached an Amazon ranking of about 2,045 in music!). Now, three years later, The Mirm (that’s what the crew on the Flight of the Conchords tour called him) is releasing the possibly offensive, but most likely charming God Is a Twelve-Year-Old Boy with Asperger’s. Recorded live in Chicago (the city where Abraham Lincoln lost his virginity) at the Lakeshore Theater (an intimate alt-comedy theater) in super-late 2008, this album is a collection of Eugene’s funniest new stuff.
Released: October 6, 2009
Flight of the Conchords / Flight of the Conchords Season 1 DVD - 4071599
Season One from Flight of the Conchords. All 12 episodes on two discs. These are Grammy Award-winning artists, people.
Released: June 6, 2008
Flight of the Conchords / Flight of the Conchords - SP715
Flight of the Conchords follow the release of their six-track Grammy Award-nominated Grammy Award-winning (it’s true!) CDEP The Distant Future with their full-length record album debut, the conveniently titled Flight of the Conchords (which, not at all coincidentally, is also the name of their HBO television series). Produced by Mickey Petralia (Beck Midnight Vultures, Ladytron Light & Magic) in Los Angeles, New York and Wellington, the album features fully fleshed-out and professionally recorded versions of Flight of the Conchords concert and television favorites. And its release finally renders pointless all the inexpert fan-made audio transfers (the modern day equivalent of holding a microphone up to the television speaker and shouting at your mom to be quiet), which have bloated hard drives the world over. The songs are heard here in expanded but reverent arrangements. Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement’s trademark acoustic guitars lead the blitz, backed by a diverse array of instrumentation and production technique.
And, the album sounds legitimate and musically, it’s incredible, but, as Shakespeare said, “Does it funny?” Happily, yes. If amazing, delightful and hilarious is your idea of funny, then prepare for undisappointment! These 15 songs pay homage to Pet Shop Boys, censorship, Marvin Gaye, sexism, Shabba Ranks, and backhanded compliments. To be blunt, if you can’t find a rire ou sourire in the FSL study guide of opening track, “Foux du Fafa,” then, please notice, vous êtes malade.

Flight of the Conchords / The Distant Future - SP746
Herewith, Sub Pop’s debut release from New Zealand’s 4th most popular folk-comedy duo (and, yes, okay, also current HBO phenoms), Flight of the Conchords. The Distant Future EP includes “Business Time,” “If You’re Into It,” and “Not Crying,” as well as live versions of “The Most Beautiful Girl in the Room” and “Robots.” Plus, there’s live banter! We will be releasing a Flight of the Conchords full-length recording sometime in early 2008
Released: August 7, 2007
Patton Oswalt / Werewolves and Lollipops - SP737
Patton Oswalt has been a stand-up comedian for almost twenty years. And this is his second CD. Lazy…or maybe busy. He’s appeared in over twenty movies, including Magnolia, Reno 911!: Miami and the documentary The Comedians of Comedy, which he also created and produced. This spring, the Comedians of Comedy were the first ever comedians to ever perform at the Coachella Music Festival. Patton’s also a regular at Bumbershoot, SXSW and Bonnaroo.
Most of his film work came during hiatus from CBS’s The King of Queens, where he played the character “Spence” for nine seasons. He’s also a regular on shows like Reno 911!, a frequent guest on Late Night with Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Kimmel Live, and a recurring voice actor on Kim Possible, SpongeBob SquarePants, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and Crank Yankers.
He’s a regular columnist in The New York Times Magazine, and was an un-credited writer on the Borat movie. This summer, he’s the lead voice in Pixar’s Ratatouille, playing a rat named Remy, who dreams of being a chef in Paris. Werewolves and Lollipops is his first record on Sub Pop, and was recorded in the Cap City Comedy Club in Austin, Texas in December of 2006.
Released: July 10, 2007
Eugene Mirman / En Garde, Society! - SP707
Eugene Mirman is a comedian, writer, and film maker based in New York City (where, according to commercials, salsa is terrible). In 2004, Eugene released The Absurd Nightclub Comedy of Eugene Mirman, a CD/DVD on Suicide Squeeze Records. The album was voted one of the Best Albums of 2004 by both The Onion and Time Out New York. His weekly standup-variety show Invite Them Up, which he co-produces with Bobby Tisdale and Holly Schlesinger, recently won a Nightlife Award from an organization called The Nightlife Awards. No one knows exactly who they are, but Tony Danza was there and so was one of the Golden Girls. In late 2005, Comedy Central Records released a 3-CD + DVD Invite Them Up set.
Recorded live at Piano’s in New York City in October of 2005, En Garde, Society! is Eugene’s second full-length solo comedy album with DVD supplement, and his first for Sub Pop Records. On the new album, Eugene blends things he notices in the world with talking about them in a funny way. Sometimes, without meaning to, he blows people’s minds. He’s sorry, but who else will tell you the truth about math teachers, religion and bears?
Released: May 9, 2006
David Cross / Its Not Funny - SP635
Recorded in January of 2004, during a four-night, eight-show stand in Washington, DC, It’s Not Funny is the follow-up to David’s Grammy Award Losing (to Weird Al’s Poodle Hat!) album, Shut Up, You Fucking Baby! “A truth teller in the noble tradition of Bill Hicks, Richard Pryor and Lenny Bruce, Cross aims not just to entertain, but to challenge, provoke, and shake his audience out of its complacent stupor…as urgent and outraged as a Noam Chomsky lecture, but infinitely more entertaining” (The Onion). “Simply put, David Cross is the gentlest, kindest, and most sanitary man I have ever met” (Dave Eggers).
Released: May 4, 2004
David Cross / Let America Laugh - SP556
This is a feature-length documentary of David Cross’s entire North American comedy tour. This IS NOT a concert film.
“What? You mean this isn’t just a straight concert film, but rather a feature-length documentary of David Cross’ entire North American comedy tour? Loaded with unique onstage material that didn’t already appear on his Shut Up, You Fucking Baby CD? Plus tons of baffling encounters with drunks, fans, family members, promoters, interviewers, television sets, walkouts, and fellow comedians? What were we thinking?”
Released: November 4, 2003
David Cross / Shut Up, You Fucking Baby! - SP590
Shut Up, You Fucking Baby! is Sub Pop’s first-ever intentional comedy release. This 2-CD set was recorded during a sold-out spring/summer 2002 national tour (of rock clubs, with opening bands, as opposed to our nation’s sad network of comedy clubs). Cross is sharp, incisive and extremely funny. David Cross was one half of the Mr. Show dynasty and during his illustrious career, hs has played recurring roles on the TV programs Arrested Development and The Colbert Report, and won an Emmy Award for his contributions to The Ben Stiller Show. He has also starred in such films as Waiting for Guffman, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, the Bob Dylan fantasy I’m Not There (in which he portrayed Allen Ginsberg), and Kung Fu Panda.
Released: 2002-11-05 (2xCD), 2003-08-18 (LP), 2002-11-05 (MP3s)

Eugene Mirman / The Will to Whatevs Book - 30707980
A book authored by Eugene Mirman himself.
This review is from Amazon!
“A work of penetrating insight and rigorous scholarship. By turning our attention away from the ‘will to power’ and toward the more deeply significant will to whatevs, Mirman reshapes the debate in a way that will doubtless influence philosophers for generations to come.” (Joshua Knobe, professor of philosophy and cognitive science at Yale University )
Clearly a must-read for any lover of laughter and insight.
