The Shins are going to be incredibly busy this month. And, because we think that the various things they’re doing are pretty amazing, and also because we are having a hard time keeping track of it all ourselves (…), the following summation of January ’07, aka the month The Shins are totally all up in your grill:

I got to go to the taping when the Shins performed on Letterman just recently and it was a fun time. I stared at Ricky Gervais, said a kind hello to Forest Whittaker, and shook Paul Schaffer’s hand.
Here is a sneaky picture I took during the rehearsal for the show.

MTV’s Subterranean program (aka pretty much the one hour a week they might play our videos, aka 120 Minutes if it was only 60 minutes long) has a new blog on the internets and it is currently featuring quite a bit of Sub Pop-related information and video. For instance, here are The Shins riding some Segways on a track in Portland. You just can’t beat that.
This week The Shins are the House Band on MTVu and Hutch from "The…

Our friends The Shins will be performing on TV’s popular Late Night with Conan O’Brien program on the night of Wednesday, March 14th. If all goes according to plan and we’re able to talk them out of doing their new live piece, “Boston: A Medley in Memoriam,” they will be playing the song “Turn on Me” from their recent, pretty-darned-successful -if-we-do-say-so-ourselves album, Wincing the Night Away. And, as if that’s not enticement enough to tune in, Andy Richter is going…

The Shins, The Rapture, and a whole bunch of other bands are going to be playing the Austin, TX stop of the mtvU Campus Invasion Music Festival ’07! And (!), the whole shebang, shindig, clambake, or whatever you want to call it (though, we’re betting “lollapalooza” is out of the question) is designed to generate awareness of the ongoing genocide in Darfur and funding to help end the bloodshed in the region. The folks behind this festival have partnered up with the Save Darfur Coalition – check their site out for more info.

UPDATE! AS OF MAY 1, 2007 WE ARE COMPLETELY OUT OF THESE SHINS 7"S. THIS OFFER IS NO LONGER VALID. We have a very limited number of a Shins 7" that was available only at indie retailers with the purchase of Wincing the Night Away. It comes in a white paper sleeve and features “Spilt Needles” (alt version) b/w “Nothing at All” (which might just be my favorite new Shins song). All you have to do is buy anything by…

Those ever-industrious Shins have a new live EP up and available in the iTunes store today! Recorded earlier this year at the tremendously famous Record Plant in Hollywood, CA (where Vanilla Fudge recorded, duh), the EP is available here. To the best of our collective knowledge (which is, admittedly, maybe not saying much…), these songs mark the recorded Shins debut of Eric Fruit Bats Johnson.
Here’s the track list:
1. Phantom Limb
2. Australia
3. So Says I
4. Girl Sailor
5. Turn on Me

R Buckminster Fuller once said, “I just invent, then wait until man comes around to needing what I’ve invented,” and this would be wholly unremarkable but for the fact that Harry D. Hudson, Sub Pop’s Master of Technolo-something, said nearly this same thing to me about a new product that he is now prepared to offer for sale exclusively on this very website. What is this mysterious invention that will revolutionize the world as we know it? What ungodly creation…

I kinda hate year the end round-ups and trite “best of” lists that will make up the rest of the journalistic year, but I think it’s a practice steeped in deep tradition and I guess it’s somewhat helpful, so here’s a little bit about what went down at Sub Pop in the past months. 2007 brought us follow up records from old faves The Shins, Low, Jennifer Gentle, Iron and Wine, Band of Horses, Kinski, and Mudhoney as well as…

Jesse Sandoval, ex-drummer of the Shins recently opened a New Mexican themed taco cart in downtown Portland called Nuevo Mexico and Vendr.tv did an interview with him that you can watch here. Jesse’s food looks delicious, and there’s a surprise visit from Marty Crandall in the video. Read more about Nuevo Mexico here and on the official website. (The official one doesn’t have anything on it yet, presumably because Jesse’s too busy making sopapillas.)
