In addition to being “New Zealand’s fourth most popular folk-comedy duo,” and on top of the fact that they are signed to a recording contract with the world famous Sub Pop Records (the very record label with whom they have pledged to release not only an EP later this very summer, but also a full-length record at some as yet to be determined time in the not too distant (and in fact hopefully before the end of this year) future) Flight of the Conchords are soon to be, in the parlance of our times, kind of a big deal. This is happening largely due to the June 17th premiere of their new HBO comedy series entitled, somewhat mysteriously, Flight of the Conchords . The show is being described as “A new comedy series that makes love to your ears.” And while, sure, that sounds maybe a little gross, what we’ve seen of the show is really very funny.
What’s more, the folks at HBO, along with the folks at Cornerstone have put together some free screenings of the first episode!

This Sunday, June 17th is the premiere episode of Flight of the Conchords’ new HBO series. It’s on at 10:30 pm (aka Entourage) and you should watch it! You should watch it because is is very funny, and also because we hope this show will be very popular and we will sell just obscene quantities of their as-yet-untitled forthcoming album due out in October and also perhaps less than obscene but hopefully at least filthy amounts of their new EP…

August is practically (I said ‘practically’, sheesh!) New Zealand month here at Sub Pop HQ as we go ahead and give 2 of our 3 precious release spots to way, way out of towners from down under, (kinda). August 7th will see the release of Structure and Cosmetics by The Brunettes and The Distant Future by Flight of the Conchords, both of whom are from New Zealand. Which is located near Australia. On the bottom of your globe. The Brunettes…

R Buckminster Fuller once said, “I just invent, then wait until man comes around to needing what I’ve invented,” and this would be wholly unremarkable but for the fact that Harry D. Hudson, Sub Pop’s Master of Technolo-something, said nearly this same thing to me about a new product that he is now prepared to offer for sale exclusively on this very website. What is this mysterious invention that will revolutionize the world as we know it? What ungodly creation…

Somewhat unbelievably, though no less deservedly, Flight of the Conchords won an actual Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album the other night! For a record (The Distant Future) that we, here at Sub Pop, released!
Whoa!
Ever since David Cross’s Shut Up, You Fucking Baby lost to Weird Al’s Poodle Hat album back in ‘04, we kinda figured we’d never win one. But, maybe David just shouldn’t have used the word “Fucking” in the title of his album?
Anyhoo, congratulations…

Today, and this is no April Fools joke, is Sub Pop Records’ 20th Anniversary. When I asked Jon Poneman, aka The Jonald, how it feels to turn 20 he responded, “The company maintains bowel movements at regular intervals so we’re not nearly as grouchy as some other labels our age.” I couldn’t put it better myself, but this is coming from a man who has never once used the bathroom in the office.
April is packed full of highly anticipated…

May has arrived and here at HQ we are all ready for the best summer we’ve ever known, what with all the good records coming out and the hot shit SP20 Festival right around the corner. In fact, the SP20 Fest was voted Best Summer Music Fest in an informal poll I quietly held here at my desk. Want more info? Read this, bub.
The highly anticipated new No Age record Nouns comes out May 6th and will be available…

All of the bands/artists/comedians participating in our various 20th anniversary revelries have agreed to play for free in the hopes of raising a bunch of money to give to a bunch of worthwhile organizations. Basically, we’re pooling the money we make, dividing it amongst everyone playing and each band/artist/comedian picks a recipient.
Herewith the list of organizations to which these folks have elected to donate their share of the proceeds. And, sometimes, where possible, we’ve included a bit of info…

Our otherwise mild-mannered Sub Pop offices were completely unable to contain our obscene levels of enthusiasm when these three brand new Flight of the Conchords t-shirts came in; and I’m only exaggerating a little bit! With these three remarkably designed t-shirts, you can be the envy of friends and strangers alike!
Eagerly awaiting your credit cards right here!

Last week, the nominations for the 2009 Grammy Awards were announced and we were pleasantly confused to discover that once again TWO (2) artists recording for the Sub Pop label earned nominations!
We are, of course, talking about No Age and Flight of the Conchords.
In category 80 (aka Best Comedy Album), the self-titled debut long-player by Flight of the Conchords is up against albums by Lewis Black, Kathy Griffin, Harry Shearer, and… George Carlin.
And, in category 88, (the…

Today is/was Groundhog Day and apparently there are six more years of winter or some crap, but that’s not stopping Sub Pop from putting out some quality records this month. February 17th is the release date for Tight Knit (CD/LP), the first ever Vetiver album on Sub Pop, but the fourth one for the band. If you pre-order Tight Knit we’ll throw in the “Hey Baby Doll” / “Miles Apart” 7” which came out on Gnomonsong last year, but act…

Season 2 of the Flight of the Conchords HBO TV show begins this Sunday night, January 18th! And, in a radical, full-body, immodest embrace of modern technology, we will be releasing, through the iTunes music store, one song from each episode on the Monday morning after that episode airs!
So, for example, on Monday, January 19th, you will be able to purchase the Flight of the Conchords song [spoiler alert!] “Angels,” from the previous night’s Season 2 premiere.
It’s what…

It’s time again for Record Store Day (April 18), sometimes known as Record Store Day 2: The Reckoning. Last year we gave out free CD samplers of our astoundingly good bands, but this year we are doing something even better—SELLING stuff by our astoundingly good bands, but only in record stores, not even here on subpop.com.
We’re doing four limited-edition 7" singles with unreleased material by Flight of the Conchords (‘Pencils in the Wind’/‘Albi the Racist Dragon’), Obits (‘I Can’t…

Hello, Friends! I love October, and this October is especially special because on October 6th a lot of cool junk is coming out on Sub Pop and Hardly Art and then Halloween happens 25 days later and Halloween is obvs the best holiday of all the holidays. Anyhow, back to the 6th…. On that day we’ll be releasing these special items: the No Age Losing Feeling EP on vinyl (Have you heard that song “You’re a Target”?!), Eugene Mirman’s new…

There is so much that could be said regarding Flight of the Conchords. How they hail from New Zealand, the island nation with multiple postal services. Or that, after winning a Best Comedy Album Grammy for The Distant Future in 2007, they were nominated for a second Best Comedy Album Grammy in 2008, but were actually relieved not to win again—because meaningless trophies really do seem important when you only have one, and have to fight over who gets to…

Flight of the Conchords will “appear” on this Sunday’s season premiere of The Simpsons. From what we’ve been able to piece together our favorite New Zealanders will be playing music camp counselors to a bunch of kids voiced by the cast of Glee. This animated confluence of comedic musical television is clearly unprecedented, so brace yourselves!

We have been popping bubbly all day long over at Sub Pop HQ, as Grammy Nominations were announced late last night for this year’s awards and two of our artists, Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba and Flight of the Conchords were nominated. Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba’s I Speak Fula was nominated in the category of “Best Traditional World Music Album” and Flight of the Conchords I Told You I Was Freaky for “Best Comedy Album.” Big ups also to…
