Today, and this is no April Fools joke, is Sub Pop Records’ 20th Anniversary. When I asked Jon Poneman, aka The Jonald, how it feels to turn 20 he responded, “The company maintains bowel movements at regular intervals so we’re not nearly as grouchy as some other labels our age.” I couldn’t put it better myself, but this is coming from a man who has never once used the bathroom in the office.
April is packed full of highly anticipated…

The Fleet Foxes record comes out on June 3rd and the LP—and it’s a gate-fold LP, mind you—comes with a digital download code, AND includes the Sun Giant EP on a second piece of vinyl! This is currently the only way to get Sun Giant on vinyl so it seems crazy not to buy it. Oh, this record is coming out on CD, too, if you’re into that. Buy it here. All of the bands/artists/comedians participating in our various 20th anniversary revelries have agreed to play for free in the hopes of raising a bunch of money to give to a bunch of worthwhile organizations. Basically, we’re pooling the money we make, dividing it amongst everyone playing and each band/artist/comedian picks a recipient.
Herewith the list of organizations to which these folks have elected to donate their share of the proceeds. And, sometimes, where possible, we’ve included a bit of info…

As reported earlier today on Pitchfork, after their van broke down, Fleet Foxes were forced to cancel their Salt Lake City show scheduled for tonight, July 23rd. Luckily, they will be back in SLC on August 18th, opening for Wilco (details).
Not so luckily, this same non-functioning van will also cause the band to miss the in-store performance they have scheduled for 6:00 pm on Friday July 25th at Portland’s excellent Music Millennium . We are truly sorry to be…

From the “Our Bad” Department:
Due to technical (and a little human) error, the version of “He Doesn’t Know Why” from the brand-new, self-titled Fleet Foxes album that was available from the iTunes Music Store had two audio drop-outs. This has now been fixed and all purchases henceforth will be correct and defect-free, as the good lord intended. We apologize profusely for this inconvenience. Please accept our apologies for the mistake.
Anyone stuck with a bum version of "He Doesn’t…

The five mellifluous, industrious, and hirsute young men of Fleet Foxes have, it was announced earlier today, won the inaugural Uncut Music Award! The Fleet Foxes’ debut won out over some very stiff competition, including the likes ot Radiohead, The Raconteurs, Vampire Weekend, Drive-By Truckers, and Bon Iver. Much more about all of this, including comments from the judges, can, and really should, be read here. Congratulations Fleet Foxes! We’re awfully proud of you guys and happy to see you…

Fleet Foxes, everyone’s favorite of 2008, will be appearing on Saturday Night Live one week from tomorrow (that’s January 17th) and they’ll be playing “Mykonos” and “Blue Ridge Mountains”. This is HUGE! And we wish them the best of luck or to break a leg or whatever is appropriate in this situation. Rosario Dawson hosts, and hopefully Justin Timberlake will just show up like he’s been doing lately.

Fleet Foxes were up against some stiff competition (LEONARD COHEN!, Seasick Steve, RADIOHEAD!, and PAUL WELLER!) for the MOJO awards Best Live Act category, and lo and behold they’ve won! According to a Reuter’s article, the organizers of the MOJO awards called Fleet Foxes “one of the greatest live bands in the world.” Woah. If that’s not crazy enough, check out this photo of Robin Pecknold sandwiched between photos of YOKO ONO and Billy Gibbons of ZZ TOP. Congrats boys!

Sohrab from Obits has been chatting, on the wall of the Obits’ Facebook page, with this 16 year-old kid about Sub Pop being 49% owned by Warner, what “indie” means, etc. And, though that summary sounds incredibly tired, it’s a pretty good conversation. Here it goes:
BJM:
Obits, what do you think about the fact that Sub Pop is 49% owned by Warner?
Obits:
Wow. Is this part of a Seger-Saget-Sub Pop conspiracy?
It’s a complicated question. Short answer is…
