Though it has been a closely guarded secret here in the Sub Pop offices for some time now, we are pleased to finally and publicly announce that we have signed Portland’s Blitzen Trapper! The band self-released their stellar Wild Mountain Nation CD in the US on June 12th of this year, and you can watch the video they made for the track “Devil’s A-Go-Go” here.
Wild Mountain Nation has been covered like crazy in the press ("here’s the full list…

Chad VanGaalen, our favorite very-tall Canadian, releases his third Sub Pop record on September 9th and it’s called Soft Airplane. Chad was once a guest on David Letterman. He and his small (not freakishly small, but smaller than Chad) friend performed a stupid human trick that involves said small friend climbing all over tall Chad. There’s a pretty hilarious story on Paper Thin Walls about it along with a clip of the trick. Go see it! Wait! Don’t go see…

On September 23rd, the Sub Pop Recording Company of Seattle, Wash., will proudly and, with any luck, quite conspicuously release the new album by Blitzen Trapper! This new Blitzen Trapper album is entitled Furr and will be available as: a big, round, black vinyl LP (complete with a free digital download code of the entire album), a much shinier, more silvery and smaller Compact Disc, or in the popular, though largely invisible MP3 format–all manufactured with the utmost care and…

And without further ado, and practically zero fanfare, here are the (mostly free!) SXSW parties with SUB POP bands! I was thinking about writing the addresses and all that jazz, but I thought that since these were free shows it’d be okay for you to do a small amount of work and figure out the location on your own. Plus, teach a man a fish and all that, you know? Anyway, enough with my constant ramblings…. HERE IS THE INFO…

Last week during SXSW I had the pleasure of accompanying Blitzen Trapper to the Seaholm Power Plant in Austin, TX—a locale that has not been producing power for years and that will most certainly be turned into condos by the next time I’m in Austin. The place was awesome—the crew said they couldn’t shoot in the lower levels of the building because they were infested with snakes, and I heard a dead bat fell on someone’s head also. Anywho, we…

It’s time again for Record Store Day (April 18), sometimes known as Record Store Day 2: The Reckoning. Last year we gave out free CD samplers of our astoundingly good bands, but this year we are doing something even better—SELLING stuff by our astoundingly good bands, but only in record stores, not even here on subpop.com.
We’re doing four limited-edition 7" singles with unreleased material by Flight of the Conchords (‘Pencils in the Wind’/‘Albi the Racist Dragon’), Obits (‘I Can’t…

The remarkably industrious lads in Blitzen Trapper just recently wrapped up work on a video for the song “Black River Killer” from their album Furr. We’ve seen this video and it’s really great. In the very near future, we’ll be doing all we can to try to show this video to you as well. But, in the meantime, you can read some behind-the-scenes stuff from someone down in Portland who has also seen it, and evidently both helped to make…

Hey, Hey! My coworkers and I are heading to Austin, TX in two short weeks so that we can wine and dine our contacts and show off the talents of our lovable and extremely talented bands. On Thursday March 19th, we’ll be at the Radio Room (508 E. 6th St – formerly Bourbon Rocks, formerly Fat Tuesdays, formerly some place with novelty shots and lots of tits). Most of these bands will be playing additional parties and what-not—we’ll post those…

The Blitzen boys have been busy bees lately. They’ve just finished a rad video , are in the middle of a pretty epic tour of the U.S. and then Europe, and will be releasing a pretty sweet EP at the end of August. Adding to the list of cool BTrapper happenings is an in-studio on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic Tuesday 7/14 at 11:15 PST! Tune in!

Yesterday the temperature rose to a sweltering 102 degrees in Seattle. Just last summer, we were calling June “Junuary” and cursing the gods/goddesses for our cold, rainy existence. Although most have been complaining of the excessive heat (me included), it’s not incredibly bad. We actually get to indulge in a few rare opportunities because of this weather. We can go night swimming! We can eat at the few restaurants here that have outdoor patios! We can leave our sweaters/jackets at…

We’ve been experiencing record breaking heat this summer (103 degrees!) and we’re all puffy and sweaty and stinky, but we still have some very fine (and not at all puffy or stinky) albums from some of our faves coming out this month. First up, Fruit Bats are back with their third LP entitled The Ruminant Band, available on CD and LP, and I whole heartedly believe that this is the record Eric D. Johnson was born to make. It’s beautiful…

Hello Sub Pop fans. I’m Katy McCourt-Basham, Radio Intern. This is my first Sub Pop photo blog.
Not all too long ago, Sub Pop gave me a break from stuffing envelopes to bandage my papercuts, get some sun, and check out Blitzen Trapper’s free show at The Mural Amphitheater in Seattle Center (presented by KEXP).
I got there a half hour or so before the show started and spots on the lawn were already hard to come by. Folks of…

As its title would lead one to believe, the Black River Killer EP contains the disturbing and great song “Black River Killer” from Blitzen Trapper’s excellent Sept. ‘08 full-length album Furr (check the video here, it’s really great). What is perhaps less evident from the title is that it also contains 6 more songs that have been, up to now, only available as a CDR that Blitzen Trapper has been selling at their live performances for the past year or…

For the Record #5 welcomes our very first guest writer and it’s none other than Blitzen Trapper’s Marty Marquis!
We asked Marty to tell us about one of his favorite Sub Pop releases and Marty, being the good guy he is, took the time to write a little bit about how Mark Lanegan’s The Winding Sheetsheet came into his favor. Accordingly, we are going to continue our practice of drastically discounting our writer’s selected title for the next 48 hours….

Somewhere probably in the top 3 or so reasons why you should buy more stuff from us here at the Sub Pop brand internet concern (the others in the running being “friendliness” and “because we all really want to keep our super cushy, glamorous music industry jobs”) is that we are forever giving away tons of free crap! And, frequently, the stuff we are giving away might not even, in certain circles, under the proper lighting, fall directly under the…

First, the first 500 people who pre-order the CD or LP from us get a really awesome key chain inspired by the open-roadedness album title (as illustrated in the accompanying photos).
Second, if you’re among the first 300 people who pre-order American Goldwing on vinyl, you’ll get it on very limited edition white vinyl.
