Dntel Remix Contest! - chrisj

Dear the people who know how to make remixes that are not unbearably shitty:

Have we got a deal for you!

Starting right now, and running until May 29th, 2007, we are having a Dntel remix contest. The idea here is pretty simple and goes something like this:

  1. You download the vocal track for the song Dumb Luck from Dntel’s forthcoming, really-pretty-terrific -if-we-do-say-so-ourselves album Dumb Luck right here
  2. You remix it.
  3. You send it to us. To do so, you can email an MP3 or AAC to webmaster@subpop.com, so long as the attached file is 8Mb or less and you write “Dntel Remix Contest!” in the subject line.
Or, you can mail your remix to us on a cd-r at this address:
    Sub Pop Records
    Dntel Remix Contest!
    2013 4th Ave., 3rd Floor
    Seattle, WA 98121
  4. We pick which one we like the best.

We’ll give the winner not only the not-insignificant-though -not-necessarily-life-changing-we’ll-grant-you sum of $500 but also include the track on an upcoming Dntel remix release! Minor fame and even more minor fortune await!

There are some rules, and so far the ones that we can think of are these:
  • Sub Pop owns all submissions.
  • All entrants are allowed to make cd-rs, download and stream their remixes wherever they want (no other uses), so long as they’re given away for free, without any charge, and licensed under Creative Commons. We can do the same.
  • We will, however, solely own and control all rights to the winning entry. We can use and sell it in any way we like (including the Dntel remix release) without payment other than the $500 paid to the winner.

It’s worth mentioning that the use of uncleared samples in your remix would pretty much disqualify you from winning.

Also evidently worth mentioning: the BPM for the song is 110.5.

stoooooked. not the best one to remix but i can’t wait! i’ve been the biggest tamborello fan for so long and i’ve always tried to find vocal tracks from his songs but can’t even get luck from the man himself :[

only question – [and anyone should (please) feel free to answer this..fans and everything, whoever]
...
what is the bpm rate or tempo for the vocal track?
the answer would be really great.
PLEASE DO THIS TYPE OF CONTEST MORE OFTEN!!!!
[to subpop and mr. tamborello]

keep the art in music!

?

it is very difficult to produce a remix sans the acapella and other parts (preferably lossless). i’d be interested if these could become available.

by envrnmntl @ 31 Mar 21:25

stuff

the acapella (vocals only, right?) version is linked up there in #1 with the text “right here”. the three things linked in #1 are the original song, the album page, and the original vocals.

i’ve been toying this for a little bit and the closest i can guess to bpm is somewhere around 110 and 111. i’m trying 110.5 for now. you can always slice up the vocals to play nice with whatever bpm you want. jimmy has a tendancy to not be “right. on. each. beat.” with his vocals, which is interesting and works well for him. i did notice that with the second part of the song (with the guitar) seems to be more on beat with the vocals. as far as ‘other parts’ i think they want you to just work with the vocals and create the rest with what you have.

as far as lossless, converting the mp3 into wav came up with a 48MB file for me, and that seems a bit much to host for everyone to download. the mp3 file isn’t of terrible quality or anything as it is.

by sk8dork @ 31 Mar 21:36

what is the key of the song?

is it d major?
bpm is 110. that’s simple.

by ni @ 31 Mar 21:54

key

for the life of me, i can’t figure out what key is the vocal.

by ni @ 31 Mar 22:42

Key, Chords, and BPM!

It’s definetly in D. The progression is D-A-Bmin.-F#min.
The BPM is 110.5 for sure.

The vocal is just in a low register so it might throw you off at first.

by Alleged Artist @ 01 Apr 00:06

yep

jimmy posted a blog on his myspace with confirmation, bpm is 110.5. awesome.

by sk8dork @ 01 Apr 13:38

This is..

a very good idea.

Does anyone have one made or know where we can go to listen to these remixes for the contest?

by emolio @ 01 Apr 17:25

thanks for the info

thanks for the info about the key. i started working on it tonight. i am almost done. thanks again.

by ni @ 02 Apr 22:57

finished!

i am finished. i hope i am the first one.
i forgot to sleep last night.
now, time to go to work.

by ni @ 03 Apr 07:44

if we let this track stream

if we let this track stream, are we disqualifying ourselves from winning? do we wait till May 29th?

thanks

by ni @ 03 Apr 09:21

We can stream it...

It says in the rules that we can stream it. Mine should be done this then I’ll post it on Myspace. Everybody should put up their links.

by Alleged Artist @ 03 Apr 11:46

I know, but it

I know, but it also says…
“We will, however, solely own and control all rights to the winning entry. We can use and sell it in any way we like (including the Dntel remix release) without payment other than the $500 paid to the winner.” That means the winner’s submission is controlled by SPR. Since the winner won’t be announced until May 29th, don’t we lose the permission until that time? Also, does it mean we can stream it until May 29th, then they can determine what to do with it? I am going to assume the answer is number two. I will upload it now since the rule wasn’t very clear.

I hope some shitty club remix doesn’t win, that would be a shame, but most likely will be the case.

Right Clicking and everything

Ok so I just tried downloading the song and Im having no luck. When I click on the “here” it brings me to another page which just plays the track with no way of downloading. SO I tried right clickign and all I get is “open in new page” or some other stuff that doesnt apply. SO, is there an alternative to getting the vocals?

by manmachine @ 03 Apr 18:07

Creative Commons

Hi there:

I was excited to see a Sub Pop remix contest, until I got to the part that says all submissions belong to Sub Pop.

In this Creative Commons age, I suggest that if you instead released the a capella BY NC, then
remixers could gain the right to post their remixes on their own sites without causing you the concern that they will misappropriate the ‘pella for commercial reasons.

The “sub pop owns all submissions” really defeats the spirit of remixing. It also deprives you of a
chance to virally market the artist through the remix process.

It’s your contest, of course, and the rights are to do with as you choose. But whereas I was about to run over to ccmixterblog to tell everyone to enter, I now am here registering this note.

best to you, and thanks for all the great sub pop artists…

The Rules

Tony from Sub Pop here. You are all free to post your remixes anywhere you like for free. The ownership stipulations are there for legal reasons that are too boring and a little too confusing for me to try and explain here. We absolutely want and encourage you to freely post your remixes far and wide. If you are chosen as the winner we will not ask you to remove your remix from any websites you might have made it freely available on. Sorry for any confusion in the rules. Bear with us, we’re new at this sort of thing.

by tony @ 05 Apr 10:44

RE: Creative Commons and Sharing Your Remix (from a Sub Popper)

Hi all. We have no intention to keep you from sharing your remixes, in fact, we want to encourage you to share them! The reason (from my understanding) that our legal department wanted Sub Pop to “own all submissions” mainly had to due with them being extra, positively, triple-sure that folks couldn’t sue Jimmy if he wrote a song later on that someone decided sounded like their remix. We have a long, sorted past with being sued for all sorts of things that seemed innocent enough to us to the time.

That said, we don’t have any interest in stopping anyone from doing anything with their remix short of selling it and/or trying to sue us or Jimmy over it… Share it! Remix each others remixes! Have fun!

by ni @ 05 Apr 17:56

Calm Down

Like I said on the board that you troll, this obviously isn’t the place for you to take up your issues with my opinions on your shitty remixes, do it there. Don’t be mad because everyone agrees that you’re living in the early 90’s. Your random insults are almost as hilarious as your “it isn’t eeeaasy” vocal track, considering you don’t know anything about me or what I do. Also, messaging a 16 year old girl on myspace saying her music is a joke is really classy. As far as I’m concerned, you’re in the negatives, Ni -2 SuperJames 0 I’m sorry I haven’t posted remixes yet, I’m looking for just the right pair of parachute pants and a barber that will give me a sweet fade so I can match your boy band remix styles. Seriously, just stop posting.

by SuperJames @ 05 Apr 21:23

we are waiting

I don’t where are you getting your acquisition. What do you mean troll? You publicly insulted me around the web and you never even met me. You have the right to speak and so do I. This is the net. That’s the beauty of digital information. Also, I would like to make a point about which random insult are you indicating? I am not even on the forums you have insulted me. A very kind fellow remixer here has pointed out. In order to accuse a person, it has to come with a prove of evidence. Imagination through internet isn’t form of action.
We really do not care about the imaginary world you have create for yourself. This isn’t RPG game or imaginary myspace world, so I have no idea to get inside your head to understand your imagination. Please, share your work with us. Music is heard by the ears, not by the intention. So far, you haven’t provide anything worth while to claim your super status.
We are waiting. Let’s have fun with this competition. I am already having fun. Let us hear with our ears not with the eyes. This is how you do your do a remix competition. Next time, I hope Subpop does it little differently like other remix competitions from different labels. Let’s all have fun. Competition is very healthy. We are waiting James.

by ni @ 06 Apr 03:41

...

Once again, your insults are baseless and hilarious. I’m not going to make this escalate any further, stop contaminating this contest page.

by SuperJames @ 06 Apr 08:57

Sample the song?

So we get the vocal, that’s cool, but no samples from the rest of the song. Would I be totally disqualified if I sampled bits from the full track and used them in the remix?

by the_tremulance @ 07 Apr 20:53

Sounds good.

The_tremulance. Yeah, sounds good. I like the arrangement; nice and dry and organic. The vocal gets a little buried in the 2nd verse. I had the same problem with mine for a while. The vocal track for this is really all over the place dynamically so it’s hard to work with.

by Alleged Artist @ 07 Apr 21:38

thanks.

thank you. i listened through it again yesterday, and i agree with you on the vocals. i think i’ll fix that.

Kissing Your Sister

I know this is all for fun, but I got to thinking, what happens if a remix of a remix actually wins? doesn’t that raise certain moral issues about what goes to whom? Is it a tie?

feel free to listen, download, and remix my remix, since it’s largely organic it should be pretty easy to do so, but if your remix of my remix wins, the only thing I ask is that you buy me a beer if you’re ever here in Seattle.
