New Releases
Can it be another birthday themed song?
I’d want someone to sing “Birthday” by the Beatles to me while jumping on a trampoline!
by Lasso @ March 2, 2010, 12:36 PM
"Birthday," by The Beatles
“Birthday,” by The Beatles
You say it’s your birthday
Well it’s my birthday too, yeah
You say it’s your birthday
We’re gonna have a good time
I’m glad it’s your birthday
Happy birthday to you.

or, on an opposite note…
Tequila by Idiot Flesh

Hmmm...this is a tough one
I can’t decide which Quasi song I’d rather hear played for me: I Never Want To See You Again or You Fucked Yourself. Both would be great swapmates!

Its Your Thing - The Isley Brothers
“Its your thing, do what you wanna do!”
Since birthdays are all about yourself this song is perfect!

Altered Images "Happy Birthday", of course

Such a wonderfully catchy and simple song with a hypnotic bass line.

New Birthday Song....
Hopefully some of these Happy Birthday (the band) tunes will become birthday standards. In the meantime however, it’d probably something from some of these hot Worcester bands, DOM or Golden Girls.
PS: I swear thats not meant as a plug for their bands, I just feel some serious positive energy when I listen to their music. On that note you should go check them out!!!

The Birthday Dirge
Happy birthday…
Sin and sorrrow are in the air,
People are dying everywhere,
BUT!
Happy birthday…
Now that you’re the age you are,
Your demise cannot be far,
BUT!
Happy birthday…
So you’ve aged another year,
Now you know that death is near,
BUT!
Happy birthday…
by divegator @ March 2, 2010, 2:30 PM
Well, He would have to sing it live for every birthday forever
but if I was the Governor of Sound in your new world order, i would make it

Altered Images and "Sixteen Candles"
I agree with clickxclick. Altered Images rules! And the song was in the best birthday movie ever, “Sixteen Candles”!

The new birthday song?
Nirvana – Rape Me.
No explanation necessary. Oh yeah.
by jeremysexytime @ March 3, 2010, 9:35 AM
This is too easy...
“Dust In The Wind” by Kansas, of course.
If you’re not a Kansas fan then might I suggest “Kids Will Be Skeletons” by Mogwai.
No lyrics to distract you in that one, so your mind will be completely free to contemplate the pointlessness of human existence and the cruelty of Father Time.
Happy 35th, buddy!

DECADES ONLY!
“Ten Years Gone” by Led Zeppelin
Of course it could only be played at decade milestones, but maybe that’s the only time we should be celebrating birthdays anyways! Or you could choose which second number to use it on, like, if you only want it when you’re 23, 33, 43, etc, I think I would choose the sixes, it seems like a nice sharp digit! This every year junk is a bit much. I don’t want to be reminded how far I’m getting from sixteen! And actually I just turned 26! I should have come up with this earlier! Maybe I could have shed an inspiring, heart-felt tear at my birthday party/handful of friends getting drunk and playing stratego at 26…sigh

Birthday Song
This is easy:
“Happy-Go-Lucky-Me” by Paul Evans.
(You can find it on the Pecker soundtrack)
by freddyjon @ March 4, 2010, 9:42 AM
It's obvious....
but perhaps Unhappy Birthday by The Smiths, just to remind you that you have no right to be happy on your birthday.

Lovin' Spoonful - "Darling Be Home Soon"
I always loved playing this gorgeous song on my birthday because of this verse:
“And now
A quarter of my life is almost past
I think I’ve come to see myself at last
And I see that the time spent confused
Was the time that I spent without you
And I feel myself in bloom”
by Roffer @ March 22, 2010, 3:20 PM
territorial pissings- Nirvana
because it would just sound right. itd also be easy because 50% of americans own a copy of nevermind anyway.
im Pedgalad, i just cant get into my account right now.

Cracker - Happy birthday to me
I say, “I remember you
you drive like a PTA mother”
You brought me draft beer
in a plastic cup
I’m feeling thankful
for the small things, today
I’m feeling thankful
for the small things, today
Happy, Happy Birthday to me
Happy Birthday to me
and to you
………….I brought in 32 like that.

It's my Life - Animals
It’s a hard world to get a break in
All the good things have been taken
But girl there are ways
To make certain things pay
Though I’m dressed in these rags
I’ll wear sable……
It’s my life and I’ll do what I want
It’s my mind and I’ll think what I want
This song makes me feel better each birthday when I feel like I should be further along in life… but I’m doing what I love and it’s not a straight path. the Dude would Abide
by Abbi @ March 29, 2010, 2:23 PM
Don't think about it....
….do it. With apologies to Tom Scharpling and The Best Show on WFMU, I think the best song for your 35th (and mine which is coming up soon) is that nice reminder by Rollins Band (by way of Pink Fairies) entitled “Do It”.

Birthday Gal - the Replacements
Wax is dripping from the frosting on the cake
Come on girl, buckle up, and don’t hesitate
Take a deep breath and blow ’em all away.
We sang of key and all the dishes china-blue
Remember don’t tell a soul, that wish, it won’t come true
Hey sad face on your lucky day.
Birthday gal, did you wish yet?
Can you handle the turn? the candles are burnin’ low
Birthday gal, did you wish that..
There weren’t quite as many candles that you had to blow?
Hair falls down all around the eyes that close
She might wear them earrings but she won’t wear the clothes
Oh, hang ‘em up with all the ones that don’t fit no more
I thought this was a party, so come on let’s lighten up
No one gets a slice until we make the first cut
No, we’ll leave the lights down, she’s ready now and this is here.
Birthday gal, did you wish yet?
Can you handle the turn? the candles are burnin’ low
Birthday gal, did you wish that..
There weren’t quite as many candles that you had to blow?
Birthday gal, did you wish yet?
Can you handle the turn? the candles are burnin’ low

have to use the Royksopp song “Happy Birthday”
It sounds like if everyone lived inside Huxley’s Brave New World had to sing a birthday song.
Robotic.

Sixteen Tons
Sixteen Tons, the Tennessee Ernie Ford version
You load sixteen tons, what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt.
Saint Peter, don’t you call me, ‘cause I can’t go;
I owe my soul to the company store.

Fun to sing with a matter-of-fact perspective on birthdays!
Ob-la-di, ob-la-da, life goes on, brah!…
Lala how the life goes on…

It's Enough - Sleater-Kinney
Seems an odd choice, I know, but I can just hear a group of slightly drunk folks singing off key,
“It’s enough, it’s enough
if you want it that much
it’s enough, it’s enough, it’s enough, it’s enough!”
Perfect birthday sentiment.

Rip-didle-ip-dip-dip it's your birthday
I like the Steve Brule birthday song from Tim & Eric Awesome Show. It’s shorter and slightly less annoying than the standard Happy Birthday song.

NKOTB "Happy Birthday"
This is the easiest decision I’ve ever had to make.
New Kids on the Block “Happy Birthday”
contains the sage advice…
“Age is just a number, don’t you stop having fun”
wisdom beyond their years and so much soul
yours truly
