I was streaming the KEXP albums-of-09 countdown most of new years eve. Though, when the date flipped over, I was at a party w/ some random pop country on the host’s ipod :(

Let's see
Well, since I was listening to someone else’s ipod, and because I had some “Electric Rum” (151 infused with weeeeeed), I can only half remember. Here’s what I half remember:
Handsome Furs
Cave Singers
the Thermals
some other stuff
and that stupid, freaky lady with the fake “tattoo” leggings on KING 5’s New Years at the Needle. Did you see her?? Why was she on there??
by sebaker @ January 4, 2010, 2:21 PM
my new year was cooler than yours
I flew from Portland to Chicago for NYE to see The Jesus Lizard’ last show ever! I also got the set list and returned it, triumphantly yo Portland. So there.

Fresh macaronies and hot ponche!
As i spent the new year’s eve with my family, i had to make an eclectic selection so everyone could be happy. I’d like to think that i succedeed.
The Byrds play Dylan.
Clapton’s unplugged.
Françoise Hardy greatest hits.
Travelling Wilbury’s first album.
Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue.
Some Johnny Cash and Buena Vista Social Club.
Later on, when i was alone with my bro’, we listened to
Meat Puppets 2nd album
Velvet Underground’s Loaded and
José Alfredo Jimenez, hehehehe.

i swear it wasn't my fault. except the snowman
on New Year’s Eve, I listened to Jamiroquai, Robbie Williams and (for reasons which continue to baffle) Pinl Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. I had no access to the stereo, so I am blameless. Fortunately spent the meander home (tea with Bailey’s instead of milk. genius) listening to Soulsavers’ Broken on the iPod till I misjudged a straight bit on the pavement, tripped over a waist-high hedge and accidentally broke someone’s snowman. So, mostly crap music (albeit in sparkiling company) and a free carrot. Usual Thursday night out then.
by Foz @ January 4, 2010, 3:36 PM
We listened to a
We listened to a visibly-uncomfortable Justin Beiber serenade Selena Gomez, who didn’t seem to give two shits.
That’s a pretty definitive News Years in my mind.

What I listened to
Well, since it was New Year’s, I waited all night for midnight.
Then I listened to gunfire and fireworks, and then my dogs barking at said explosions. It was quite the beautiful cacophony if you ask me.

Right before
Right before the clock struck midnight, me and my friends started blasting Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now” as loud as my friend’s turntable speakers would allow. It was his final night in his apartment and he was dead-set on starting the new year deaf. It was amazing.

My girlfriend and I were throwing an 80s-themed party (I know, I know . . . how very white of me) and so I rang in the new year partying like it was 1989! “You Make My Dreams Come True” by Hall and Oates was playing as the clock struck twelve at the beginning of 2010! Other favorites of the night:
“Lorelei” by Cocteau Twins
“Joanna” by Kool and the Gang
“How Will I Know” by Whitney Houston

Dancin' with yo momma!
Wow, I can’t believe how mellow some of this stuff people were listening to is. There’s a time for chill and a time for dancing. I love Subpop, but for NYE:
1.) DATA/DEBT – California Special (Eumig & Chinon remix)
2.) Nighty Max – Beach Hut
3.) Talking Heads – Girlfriend is Better
4.) Body Language – Sandwiches (B.L. remix)
5.) Washed Out – Get Up
6.) The Drums – Let’s Go Surfing

5 Rugs
I visited some friends in Minneapolis and I made up a song about my friend having 5 rugs in her Kitchen. We recorded it and then played it over and over and kept adding verses. It turned out very country-ish but it was still amazing.
Example:
“I got 5 rugs in my Kitchen
and I think it’s pretty bitchin’
Cause my feet are staying warm and dry
From De-cem-brrr until July”

Reminds me of a couples party...
So, I had a dinner date who played jazz. All night long. It was unremarkable jazz too. This foreshadowed the lack of tongue when we kissed at midnight.

i had just gotten nirvana “live at reading” the previous day as well as some rare cassettes of some shows, such as a really early soundgarden show back when they were called the shemps, and a copy of the scrapped pink floyd demos after dsotm entitled “household objects”. i also managed to get my hands on a couple snippets of sp20, particularly green river and no age. live albums such as the melvins “Alive at the F*cker Club”, mayhem “dawn of the black hearts”, and a couple snippets of the first nirvana show.

FRAT-A-CIDE
we had a ‘frat party’ theme. we all dressed like douchebags with white hats, shitty cologne and jokes about tag teaming girlfriends, then played flipadelphia cup and drank moonshine. The music was the worst thing ever, lots of shitty radio hits and cringe worthy jock jams: alien ant farm covering michael jackson stands out because i got mad, the rest is a bit blurry tho- oh wait, when ‘born in the USA’ came on- everyone was just screaming the title over and over, and one chap mentioned that those were the only lyrics to the whole song.
by matthewtraxler @ January 8, 2010, 6:59 AM
Seconds before . . .
Well I had been listening to several things, I went to a rooftop party, although it was raining and cold, but we had listened to the whole Loveless record by my bloody valentine and then i started playing the live version of kick out the jams by the mc5. i had timed it so well that at the moment of the new year, you can hear the speaker say “right now, its time to . . . KICK OUT THE JAMS MOTHA FUCKAAAA” and then the riproaring rhythm section marked my first moments of 2010 . . . epic.

Wholesome Entertainment
Apart from an extremely loud duck which lives on the canal by my house, I was listening to my girlfriend complaining, because, as usual, I was beating her at Scrabble. As a special treat, I was going to let her listen to my 44 year old copy of Benny Hill Sings LP, but alas, it wasn’t to be.
That, my friends, is what counts for a rock and roll New Years Eve in East Yorkshire.
