Niki & The Dove / The Drummer - SP986

  • 10375

Niki & The Dove, the Swedish duo of Malin Dahlström and Gustaf Karlöf who NME recently referred to as “…one of Europe’s most exciting bands,” return with this new, digital-only EP called The Drummer. Four of the seven tracks here (“The Drummer,” “Last Night,” “Mother Protect,” and “Manon”) will appear on the band’s forthcoming and as-yet-unscheduled 2012 full-length debut. Along with their June 2011 single for The Fox, this new EP provides plenty of reasons to look forward to in 2012.

NME (these guys again…) had the following to say about “The Drummer”:
“Niki & The Dove continue distilling the elemental into cautionary, unpredictable electronic shapes on this, perhaps their most gleaming pop moment to date.”

Niki & The Dove will be on tour throughout the UK for much of October and will support Hurts in the UK in early November.

Spoek Mathambo / Put Some Red on It - SP982

  • 9950

Put Some Red on It is Sub Pop’s first release from South Africa’s Spoek Mathambo. Here’s SPIN magazine on Spoek’s cover of Joy Division’s “Control” in a recent “Songs You Must Hear Now” section: “Slo-mo vocals plunge into the sepulcher as drum machines ricochet and synths snake on this ‘darkwave township house’ cover of Joy Division.”

Produced by Spoek in collaboration with Copenhagen-based future-bass artist Chllngr, Put Some Red on It is a 6-song digital-only EP featuring two tracks (“Put Some Red on It” and “Dog to Bone”) that will also appear in some form on Spoek’s as-yet-unscheduled 2012 debut full-length, plus remixes of those tracks and a brief intro piece. We’re just ridiculously excited about the music Spoek’s making and this EP provides a glimpse at a album we hope you’ll soon look forward to as much as we do.

  • 10357

Scottish experimental-rock institution Mogwai follow up their Feb. 2011 Sub Pop debut Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will with the Earth Division EP. Earth Division highlights a more subdued side of Mogwai, with three quietly plaintive piano- and string-infused tracks, plus the fuzz-drenched haze of “Drunk and Crazy.”

Like Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will was, the Earth Division EP will be released outside of N America by the fine folks at Rock Action Records.

Dntel / After Parties 1 - SP912

  • 8037
  • 8449

Dntel is the operational alias for Los Angeles resident Jimmy Tamborello. Jimmy also sometimes records and releases music under the name James Figurine. He is also the host of the Dublab radio show Dying Songs. And, he is also, it’s true, one half of The Postal Service (whose 2003 album Give Up is Sub Pop’s send best-selling album of all time).

In 2007, we at Sub Pop released the most recent Dntel album, entitled Dumb Luck, which included contributions from a whole raft of talented people too numerous to list here (a short version of that list would include members of Grizzly Bear, Rilo Kiley, Bright Eyes, and Arthur & Yu).

On Dec. 7th, 2010 we are releasing new music from Dntel in the form of a pair of companion EPs, entitled After Parties 1 and (very sensibly, given their complementary relationship) After Parties 2. These two EPs collect 8 new Dntel tracks (3 on After Parties 1 and 5 on After Parties 2) which are a bit more minimalist and experimental in nature, all of them instrumental, and feature (to the best of our “knowledge”) a list of guest contributors numbering exactly zero. These 8 new tracks are also, we are able to discern through the mist of biases both personal and professional, really something special.

It is worth mentioning here that at some as-yet-undefined point in 2011 we will be releasing an expanded reissue of Dntel’s 2001 full-length Life Is Full of Possibilities, which is not only a great record, but notable for, among a great many other things, including the collaboration between Ben Gibbard and Jimmy (on “(This Is) The Dream of Evan and Chan”) which led to the formation of The Postal Service.

This is After Parties 1.

And, here is where you’ll find After Parties 2

As its title would lead one to believe, the Black River Killer EP contains the disturbing and great song “Black River Killer” from Blitzen Trapper’s excellent Sept. ’08 full-length album Furr. What is perhaps less evident from the title is that it also contains 6 more songs that have been, up to now, only available as a CDR that Blitzen Trapper has been selling at their live performances for the past year or so.

Mudhoney / Mudhoney/Jimmie Dale Gilmore - SP248

  • 4423

Wherein: Mudhoney performs the Jimmie Dale Gilmore selection “Tonight I Think I’m Gonna Go Downtown,” as well as their own composition “Blinding Sun” (which, later, appeared on the very excellent Mudhoney Best of and Rarities compilation March to Fuzz), and in turn Jimmie Dale Gilmore performs the Mudhoney selection “Blinding Sun” and his own “Tonight I Think I’m Gonna Go Downtown.” The central balancing point of this EP is the Townes Van Zandt composition “Buckskin Stallion Blues,” performed by Mudhoney and Jimmi Dale Gilmore TOGETHER!

Somewhat more directly, the track listing looks like this:

1. Tonight I Think I’m Gonna Go Downtown – written by Jimmie Dale Gilmore, performed by Mudhoney
2. Blinding Sun – written by Mudhoney, performed by Jimmie Dale Gilmore
3. Buckskin Stallion Blues – written by Townes Van Zandt, performed by Jimmie Dale Gilmore with Mudhoney
4. Tonight I Think I’m Gonna Go Downtown – written by Jimmie Dale Gilmore, performed by Jimmie Dale Gilmore
5. Blinding Sun – written by Mudhoney, performed by Mudhoney

Fleet Foxes / Sun Giant - SP781

  • 4165
  • 6733

The Sun Giant EP is our first release with the really very wonderful, baroque harmonic pop combo Fleet Foxes. Their names are Skye, Robin, Joshua, Casey, and Christian and they live here in Seattle, Wash. We will be releasing a longer-length (some might even say “full-length”) recording of theirs on June the 3rd, 2008. This forthcoming recording will, in all likelihood, bear the same name as the band, and by that we mean Fleet Foxes.

The following quote is here out of context (and perhaps misused or misconstrued as a result) and taken from the inside cover of Sun Giant. Whatever else it might be, it makes for about as good of a “statement of purpose” as anything we’ve read:

“I don’t really know what I’m trying to say with this. It’s not good to romanticize a time of great hardship, hardship I’ve never known and am not conditioned to understand. I’m also not interested in a ‘back to nature’ thing, as nature as it was is gone for the time being and it would take a very big leap of faith and common sense to ignore that. But, music to me is just as awe-bringing as the world maybe once was, and I just love it a lot.”

We love it a lot, too.

If you pre-order the new Fleet Foxes full-length recording on CD or LP by June 3rd, you’ll automagically receive $2 off! That makes the CD $10 and the LP $12!

The glorious gate-fold vinyl LP version of Fleet Foxes, by the way, comes with a digital download code, AND includes the Sun Giant EP on a second, enclosed, largely complimentary (and certainly complementary) piece of vinyl! This, it seems worth mentioning, is currently the only way to get Sun Giant on vinyl. Also worth mentioning: this version of the Fleet Foxes vinyl LP, the one with that comes packaged with the Sun Giant EP, is the same version of the LP that you will find wherever and whenever you might buy it — not just here through subpop.com, and not just if you pre-order it. So, now you know!
