David Cross / Its Not Funny - SP635
Recorded in January of 2004, during a four-night, eight-show stand in Washington, DC, It’s Not Funny is the follow-up to David’s Grammy Award Losing (to Weird Al’s Poodle Hat!) album, Shut Up, You Fucking Baby! “A truth teller in the noble tradition of Bill Hicks, Richard Pryor and Lenny Bruce, Cross aims not just to entertain, but to challenge, provoke, and shake his audience out of its complacent stupor…as urgent and outraged as a Noam Chomsky lecture, but infinitely more entertaining” (The Onion). “Simply put, David Cross is the gentlest, kindest, and most sanitary man I have ever met” (Dave Eggers).

The Elected / Sun, Sun, Sun - SP701
Sun, Sun, Sun is the rope-strong, luminous follow-up to The Elected’s critically acclaimed 2004 debut, Me First. Recorded largely in motel rooms while singer/songwriter Blake Sennett was on tour with his other band, Rilo Kiley, the album is propelled by the kind of unsettled, exploratory impetus that is only native to the American open road. While portions of the album were formed in proper studios like the all-analog Hard Drive studio in Southern California, Sennett, along with bandmate Mike Bloom, recorded and produced the majority of this masterfully soulful creation in environments they were passing through. And, it’s evocative of those places and perspectives: "I’ll listen to it and think, “That was recorded in a hotel in Missoula! That, we did in the van!” The dichotomy between feeling completely at home and at the same time homeless on the road fuels Sennett’s biting, reflective lyricism and grand, sweeping compositions — after all, out there, there’s plenty of time to reminisce and look forward. At times treating grit with slide guitar, tambourines and kid gloves (“It Was Love”), and at other times spitting heart-wrenching declarations with grace (“I’ll Be Your Man”, “Did Me Good”), Sun, Sun, Sun is Sennett’s newest gem.

Steve Fisk / 999 Levels Of Undo - SP460
Long awaited solo project! Renowned NW producer (Screaming Trees, Beat Happening, Unwound, Low name but a few), musician (Pell Mell, Pigeonhed, and on his own), collaborator (with Heather Duby and with Steven Jesse Bernstein), and raconteur (Hype!), Steve Fisk brings on the freaky beats, blips, noises, and squawks. He’s something of a living legend and a master of the sampling and tape manipulation art, so listen up.

Gluecifer / Tender is the Savage - SP495
Recorded at the tail end of 1999, riff-heavy and swaggering, Tender is the Savage sets a new standard for recklessly energized rock and roll in the new millenium. And, Norway's Kings of Rcok are road-ready, prepared to take Tender is the Savage to all corners of the world – and go a long way towards putting the F-U-N (remember that?)back in rock. The Baptist Generals / No Silver/No Gold - SP615
The Baptist Generals of Denton Texas are purveyors of some of the scariest acoustic guitar mangling you’re likely to hear. Main General Chris Flemmons plays the acoustic guitar the way it was meant to be played: like a motherfuckin’ drum. Perhaps the best way to describe this band is to remind you that they come from Texas, a state that gave us everyone from Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings to Roky Erickson and the Butthole Surfers. And, No Silver/No Gold has that coveted quality of sounding as though it might fall apart at any moment.

Nebula are the full-blown embodiment of heavy psych-rock; high-energy electric blues, lead-footed psychedelic warriors, rock and roll road dogs and the best damned live band to come down the pike in a long, long time. Their self-titled second full-length finds them exploring a more full spectrum of sound – from the heavy groove they pioneered on their debut full-length, To the Center, to acoustic songs full of melody and soul. Frausdots / Couture, Couture, Couture - SP642
After decades of musical experimentation in L.A. based shoegazer outfit Further, late-‘80s Brit-sounding twangers The Tyde and seminal neo-psych folk legends Beachwood Sparks, Frausdots founder Brent Rademaker has finally taken the reins and created dream rock that’s as deliciously rich and indulgent as he wants it to be. He and Michelle Loiselle’s sexy, melodic nightlife pop marks a return to Rademaker’s songwriting roots: “I was always the psychic bassist who wrote the music,” he explains. “If I hadn’t been playing second fiddle in any band I’d ever been in, I would have made this record right out of high school.” Featuring contributions from Mia Doi Todd and members of The Cure, Warlocks, The Tyde, Rooney, and Brian Jonestown Massacre, Couture, Couture, Couture has the same rich, brittle bitterness as dark chocolate (or classic Echo and the Bunnymen albums).

Comets on Fire / Blue Cathedral - SP647
Blue Cathedral is the third album from Comets on Fire and their first for Sub Pop. It is also the Bay area band’s most varied and richly textured album yet. With their first two albums, (2001’s self-titled debut/self-released and 2002’s Field Recordings from the Sun on Ba Da Bing!) they established themselves as flag-bearers of modern psychedelia. However, where their previous efforts are full-tilt psychedelic affairs, Blue Cathedral is harder to pin down (which elusiveness we heartily support). Their trademark sound is here enriched by more structured, keyboard-driven jams, churning Blue Oyster Cult-ish chooglers and slow burners reminiscent of Harvest-era Pink Floyd. They recently opened a string of dates for Sonic Youth and have also played shows with Rocket From The Tombs, Dead Meadow AND Dead Moon, Sunburned Hand of the Man and more. They also made a BIG fan outta Lord Head on High, Julian Cope, who said of them: “Comets on Fire deserve our gratitude…for their distillation of all the best rock riffs since High Rise’s take on Blue Cheer…” Naturally, we agree.

Comets on Fire / Avatar - SP704
After 2004’s critically acclaimed Blue Cathedral, one might have expected Comets on Fire to blast off into the cosmos in an infinite flurry of lysergic spasmodicism. Surprising, then, that they should turn in an earthy, more accessible and downright beautiful album as their follow-up. Then again, it is a completely logical progression, but in reverse, sort of. On Avatar their astonishing new album, Comets display development in every direction: as musicians, as songwriters, as arrangers and as singers (?!), without sacrificing one ounce of the intensity that is expected from our heroes. As on Blue Cathedral, the diversity of the material is staggering. Avatar veers from swinging, bluesy explorations to piano-laced, progressive power balladry, to pure tribalism, evoking everyone from the Allmans, to Quicksilver, to Procol Harum, to some insane Fela/Sun Ra/Crazy Horse hybrid, yet remains wholly Comets on Fire. Though they play cleaner and clearer, their firepower is evident and abundant. They have shifted gears and opened themselves up completely. You should do the same.

The Shins / Chutes Too Narrow - SP625
The Shin’s debut full-length, 2001’s Oh, Inverted World, was a stunner; resoundingly well-received and landing itself on numerous year-end best-of-lists. MOJO placed it at #14 of the year and commented, “This quartet from Albuquerque, New Mexico captured our hearts this summer with their pristine pop perfection.” And, Seattle’s The Straner went even further with, “…a referential, brilliant record which had better blow up, or the world has forgotten what pop music is all about.” As far as we’re concerned it did blow up – seems there’s still some hope for the world and its conception of pop music. Since that first record, singer/songwriter/guitarist James Mercer and drummer Jesse Sandoval moved from Albuquerque to Portland, OR and bassist Neal Langford was replaced with Dave Hernandez (ex-Scared Of Chaka), who played bass on the stand-out track from the first record, “New Slang.” Chutes Too Narrow, their heavily anticipated follow-up, was recorded in James’ basement home studio, with later mixing assistance from Phil Ek (Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, David Cross, Les Savy Fav, etc.). And, with 10 songs, clocking in at just over 30 minutes, the new record is a brief yet entirely scintillating glimpse at chiming, reflective and perfectly skewed pop innovation.
Released: October 21, 2003
The Shins / Oh, Inverted World - SP550
Here’s what we had to say about the Shins debut record circa 2001. Hailing from Albuquerque, NM, The Shins sprung from the ashes of Flake/Flakemusic in 1997 (though those previous incarnations date back nearly a decade) – same members, different instruments, different approach. Counterpoint guitars have given way to a single guitar pitted against calculated keyboard passages; swarming indie rock machinations led to pop-based melodic endeavors (who knew?).

The Shins / Wincing The Night Away - SP705
To play music for a long time, you have to surprise the people that love you—while also surprising yourself. Recorded in singer/guitarist James Mercer’s basement studio, Phil Ek’s Seattle digs, and in Oregon City with veteran producer Joe Chiccarelli (Beck, U2), Wincing the Night Away is The Shins’ third full-length album. It’s also the sound of a band growing up and out. Mercer’s infectious, indelible melodic style is still at the core, and unfaltering. But anything can happen around it—and in this case, it does. While the vocals channel the spirit of Morrissey, “Sea Legs” pairs a loping hip-hop beat with lush melody and searing guitars. Elsewhere the band toys with tweaked-out, liquid piano steeped in kaleidoscopic strings (“Red Rabbit”); fractured synth samples (“Spilt Needles”); gauzy, arpeggiated keyboards cloaking thunderous anthems (“Sleeping Lessons”); and, taking cues from early Jesus and Mary Chain albums, sweeping, fuzz-toned epics (“Phantom Limb”). Finally, “Turn on Me,” “Girl Sailor” and “Australia” are the lilting, thrilling, rollicking, rock-solid pop songs we’ve all come to covet from The Shins. Consider yourself surprised.
