Following Keyboardist Leslie Hardy's mid-tour departure and bassist Derek Fudesco's announcement that he too would be seeking other interests (in Pretty Girls Make Graves), guitarist Nate Manny and Dann Gallucci, drummer Coady Willis and singer Spencer Moody realized the time had come to call it quits, and that the final show of their tour, played on October 31, 2001 in their home town of Seattle, would be their last. This spirited recording captures the Murder City Devils celebrating an emotional end as they pay tribute to the dedicated fan base that supported them from their raw, yet explosibe 1997 debut on the Die Young Stay Pretty label to their three subsequent Sub Pop releases – Empty Bottles, Broken Hearts, In Name and Blood, and Thelema. The Devils went out in a blaze of musical commotion and drunken glory; no true fan would have expected them to do otherwise.

A departure of sorts, the six songs on Thelema (five new and one, “364 Days,” taken from the b-side to a limited Paper Bag Series 45) find the six-piece exploring musical terrain that is as informed by the obstacles of their past as it is by an ambitious quest for the unconquered. It’s a sound that can’t be compared to the influences constantly referenced in early reviews of the band. Having served their purpose, those influences and markers have crumbled away and with Thelema The Murder City Devils have honed a vitality and style entirely their own, one that is elastic in structure, profound in its lyrical content, and melodic-yes, melodic-in tone.

THE END: FINAL SHOW HALLOWEEN 2001 documents this final hoorah and includes 18 songs from throughout the band’s relatively short-lived, but successful career. They play almost all of the hits here, included the rarely performed “boom swagger boom” with guest vocals by Pretty Girls Make Graves’ Andrea Zollo. You get to see the kids and even some of the band decked out for halloween, with sailors, spuds, apes, zombie elvises, and star wars queens. There is some rousing audio commentary from Spencer and Merchbot as well as some bonus live footage. If you were there or if you weren’t, this dvd is worth it because it truly captures what it was like that halloween night…
