Part Two:One man's opinion

Reasons Hardship Post are cool:

• They did a split single with Randy Bachman, of Bachman-Turner Overdrive fame (see discography).

• Although a Hardship Post is “a work assignment, usually abroad, where difficult conditions warrant additional compensation” (Webster’s New Lexicon, 1987), my mom saw the name and thought we were working with a newspaper for the handicapable (true story).

• Their CD crams eleven songs into just over a half hour. Short songs rule. Just ask Elastica. Long songs are old news.

• Singer/guitarist Sebastian Lippa relinquishes songwriting and singing duties to bassist Mike Pick on “Capability” and “My Secret Life,” just to fuck shit up.

• The aforementioned Mr. Lippa called himself “Johnnie Cox” on the advance CD for no good reason.

• World-famous Motor City madman Al Sutton produced Somebody Spoke, and Al's a super cool guy.

• Unbeknownst to them, they're revitalizing the glorious heyday of Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson with their confrontationally sparse, dry pop.

• They're from Newfoundland, fer Chrissakes (though they moved to Halifax a couple years ago).
